PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Washington asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. DOB lists demolition and razing of structures as work that needs a permit. Taking a whole shed down is a raze permit, with utility sign-offs, a posted notice and historic preservation clearance.

No. DPW's bulk pickup does not take construction and demolition materials, and the Fort Totten drop-off turns away demolition debris, roofing and creosote-treated lumber.

Others here: Junk Guys DC lists $200 to $400 flat, DMV Go Junk charges $10 a square foot, and LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559. Others price by truck space or quote each job.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
DOB says the property owner or contractor must get a raze permit before razing, and that it applies when nothing is left but a party wall or foundation. Partial work, like stripping a shed's siding, is a separate demolition permit. The raze fee is the structure's volume in cubic feet times 0.02. DOB emails clearance letters for Pepco, Verizon, Washington Gas, DC Water, DOEE asbestos and soil erosion, DC Health vector control and historic preservation, and won't issue the permit before the 30-day notice period ends. Razing first can bring significant fines.

DC lets you build one garden storage shed of 50 square feet or less and under 10 feet tall without a building permit, if it serves a house and is the only exempt shed on the lot. Sheds and playhouses over 50 square feet need a permit. The exemption doesn't apply in historic districts, and DOB's list doesn't say it covers taking a shed down.
Capping a water or sewer line to a shed takes a supplemental plumbing permit pulled by a DC-licensed plumber. If pulling the slab or footings disturbs 50 square feet or more of soil, DOB says you must file an erosion and sediment control plan with DOEE.
Miss Utility is the one-call center for DC. Contact it at least 96 hours, and no more than 10 days, before digging out piers, posts or a slab, or before demolition.
No. DPW collects bulky items by appointment from single-family homes and buildings with three or fewer units, up to seven items per appointment, booked through 311. Its page says renovation materials, including construction and demolition materials, bricks and concrete, are not accepted. Buildings with four or more units must hire a private, licensed hauler for bulk items. A shed's contents, like old furniture or a playhouse, can go to bulk pickup or Fort Totten; the shed itself needs a hauler or a C&D facility.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

It refuses household garbage, appliances, tires, chain link fence, creosote timbers and hazardous materials.
Fees: Not published.
Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Staff won't help unload, loads must be untarped before the scale, and rejected items go back on your truck. Call 301-925-8100 for prices.
4900 John McCormack Road NE, Washington, DC 20011
City transfer station with a drop-off for District residents' bulk items, trash, recycling and yard waste, including playhouses, disassembled swing sets and furniture. It does not accept construction and demolition materials, roofing, concrete, bricks, drywall, asbestos or creosote-treated lumber, and waste must come from inside DC.
Fees: No fee is listed on the Fort Totten page. DPW's transfer station FAQ says there is no charge for District residents dropping off their unwanted personal property.
Before you go: Resident drop-off is Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring a DC driver's license or other proof of DC residency. Cars, SUVs, and pickups and vans under 14 feet only; no trailers or business vehicles.

2160 Queens Chapel Road NE, Washington, DC 20018
WM transfer station that accepts non-hazardous construction and demolition debris and municipal solid waste from account holders. It has no residential drop-off and no hand-unloading, so it serves haulers rather than homeowners.
Fees: Not published; payment is by credit account.
Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to noon. Homeowners should use a hauler or the Sheriff Road station instead.
No DC page read gives one company the sole right to haul demolition debris. DPW does require every solid waste collector working in the District to register and report tonnage each year, at $50 per company and $50 per collection vehicle. Collectors that haul only construction and demolition waste are outside that registration. Haulers who use DPW's transfer stations must be licensed and certified and pay by the ton. Ask any crew how it is registered and where your shed will be dumped.

DC residents can drop off bulk items at the Fort Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John McCormack Road NE, Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Its list includes playhouses and disassembled swing sets, but it turns away construction and demolition materials, roofing, concrete and creosote-treated lumber. Bring a DC license or ID and come in a car, SUV, or a pickup or van under 14 feet. Businesses must use a commercial hauler.

DC sends all raze permit applications to the Historic Preservation Office, historic or not. For a non-historic property, HPO usually holds the application for the ANC notice period, which DC says is about 45 days. For a property in a historic district, a raze is typically referred to the Historic Preservation Review Board and the Mayor's Agent. A building that does not contribute to the district's character is cleared. Many Capitol Hill, Georgetown and Dupont Circle homes sit in historic districts, so check your address before booking.

Community Forklift, a nonprofit reuse warehouse at 4671 Tanglewood Drive in Edmonston, Maryland, just over the DC line, takes donated building materials in good shape and offers a limited free pickup for deconstruction projects. A sound shed's door, windows or hardware may be worth a call at (301) 985-5180.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
Start a quote from photos ↗Three companies publish a shed price for DC. Junk Guys DC lists $200 to $400 flat for shed demolition and removal. DMV Go Junk charges $10 a square foot, so a 6×8 shed is $480 and a 10×12 is $1,200. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559, set when you book. 123JUNK and College HUNKS price by truck space; Reliable Hauling quotes each job. None says its price covers a DOB raze permit.

Brandywine Sand and Gravel's Sheriff Road Transfer Station, at 5800 Sheriff Road in Fairmount Heights, Maryland, just past DC's eastern edge, takes construction and demolition debris, including roofing, concrete and rubble. It refuses creosote timbers, chain link fence and household trash, and staff won't help unload. It's open weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; prices aren't posted, so call 301-925-8100.
DOEE's asbestos permit program excludes houses and other buildings with four or fewer units, but its sign-off is still one of the raze clearance letters, so ask DOEE at (202) 535-2600 before a raze. Fort Totten won't take asbestos, and DPW's list puts it with construction and demolition waste.

DC requires notice of every raze application. The applicant posts a placard on the structure for 30 days, and DOB must give the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 30 working days' notice, usually about 45 days. DOB won't issue the permit before the notice period ends.

Some can. Junk Guys DC lists foundation removal in its flat shed price. DMV Go Junk removes the structure only and quotes slabs and footings separately. If the slab work disturbs 50 square feet or more of ground, DOB's raze rules call for an erosion and sediment control plan with DOEE.

DOB says the property owner or the contractor gets it, through an Access DC account. None of the companies listed here says it files DC raze permits, so settle who applies, who collects the utility sign-offs and who pays the fee before you book.
