Key takeaways

  • The typical advertised starting price is about $325. That's the median of the lowest shed removal price published by 24 companies on their own websites.
  • Most start between $150 and $500. 17 of the 24 companies (71%) advertise a starting price of $400 or less.
  • Bigger jobs land higher. Where companies publish the top of their range, the median top figure is $850. Cost guides stretch to $3,000 or more for large sheds with slabs.
  • The slab is its own line item. Companies that price it separately add about $200 to $800. HomeGuide puts shed plus slab at $1,200 to $3,500.
  • DIY still costs money. Dump fees at the facilities below run from a $10 minimum to a $253 minimum, before a dumpster, tools or your weekend.

What will it cost to get rid of your shed? We're a shed removal company, but we don't publish a set price, so everything here comes from published numbers: prices other companies post on their own websites, cost-guide ranges, and landfill fees if you haul it yourself.

How much does shed removal cost?

For a typical backyard shed with no slab and a clear path out, expect advertised starting prices of roughly $150 to $500. The median starting price across the 24 companies we checked is about $325.

A starting price covers an easy job: a small, mostly empty shed near where the truck parks. Larger wood sheds, slabs, tight access and packed interiors push toward the top of each range.

How we built the price sample

We read the shed removal pages of junk removal and hauling companies across the U.S., recorded every dollar figure they publish for a shed and what it covers, then sorted them:

  • Counted (24 companies): a shed price the company presents as its own, such as "from $149," "minimum of $500," a flat rate, or a price table by shed size. The companies are in California, Colorado, Washington, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and New England, plus one national service.
  • Not counted, generic junk prices: a site-wide minimum or truck-load price that isn't specific to sheds, such as "volume-based pricing starting at $125" or "starting at $99." These tell you a company's floor, not what a shed costs.
  • Not counted, market averages: pages that only repeat national or "typical" ranges, often copied from the cost guides below.

Each company counts once, at the lowest shed price it advertises. "From $500" counts as $500. "$400–$1,200" counts as $400. "$8 a square foot" counts as its smallest listed shed, $384. Where a company publishes the top of its range, we recorded that too.

What the spread shows:

  • Low floors are for small sheds. Many of the sub-$200 starts are volume-based minimums or prices for the smallest sheds. They fit a small resin or metal shed, not a 10×12 wood shed. Junk Dudes in San Diego, for example, starts a small resin shed at $89 but puts a typical 8×10 or 10×12 wood shed at $249 to $349.
  • $300 and $500 are common floors. Four companies start at $300 and five at $500, often as a stated minimum for any shed job.
  • National brands can sit higher. LoadUp lists shed removal nationwide from $1,555, and that excludes the contents, slab removal and electrical disconnection.

What these numbers are and aren't

They are advertised prices, recorded with a source and a date, not quotes. They don't all cover the same work: some include contents or the slab, some don't. Use them to know what's normal, then compare written quotes. Our sample is too small to compare regions reliably; as with most removal work, the job matters more than the map.

What the cost guides say

The national cost guides give wider ranges, because they cover everything from a resin box to a large shed on a slab.

Published cost-guide ranges for shed removal, read October 7, 2026.
SourceShed removal rangeOther figures
HomeGuide$200–$2,000 (shed only)Shed plus concrete slab $1,200–$3,500; takes 4 hours to 2 days
Angi$250–$3,000$3.50–$11.50 per sq ft; disposal fees $300–$1,800; many companies set a minimum around $250
Fixr$500–$3,500Debris removal $400–$800 a truckload; permits from about $100
HomeAdvisor$400–$7,000 (barn or shed)$50–$100 an hour; permits $100–$500; cleanup and disposal $300–$1,800

The guides run higher because a starting price is the easiest job, while a guide range includes the hardest. For a small, empty, easy-to-reach shed, the advertised starting prices are the better benchmark.

Shed removal cost by size

HomeGuide and Angi publish prices by shed size, and several companies publish their own size tables.

A quick way to sanity-check a quote: DMV Go Junk prices shed demolition at a flat $8 a square foot, and Angi's guide range is $3.50 to $11.50 a square foot. Multiply your shed's length by its width to see where a quote sits.

Shed removal cost by material

The guides and the companies don't fully agree here, and the reason is useful. Angi says metal sheds often cost more, because large metal sheets take extra labor and heavier materials carry higher disposal fees. HomeGuide says wood-framed sheds tend to be easier and cheaper to demolish than metal or concrete ones. Yet several companies price small metal and plastic sheds lower, because they're light and pack down small in the truck.

Company prices that separate shed materials, from their own websites, checked October 7, 2026.
Company (area)Metal or plasticWood
Ohio Junk Force (Columbus, OH)From about $300From about $800, up to about $1,700 for a 12×16
Horton's Hauling (Baltimore County, MD)Metal storage unit from $300Small (6×8 or 8×8) from $400; standard (10×12 or 10×16) from $450

Box Pro Express (Yuba City, CA)Larger metal or composite $525Standard wood from $375

In short: a small metal or resin kit shed is usually the cheapest removal. A framed wood shed is more work, and a large metal building or any shed on a slab moves back up.

What changes the price

Size and construction

More square footage means more labor and debris. A framed shed with a floor, shingles and shelving makes far more debris than a resin kit of the same footprint.

The foundation or slab

Blocks or gravel leave little behind. A concrete slab is a separate, heavy job. HomeGuide says breaking up a slab and hauling it away "can more than double" the cost because of the extra weight. Ask every company whether the slab is included, left in place, or quoted separately. See the slab section below and our guide to shed foundation removal.

Contents

Some prices include clearing out what's inside. The Junk Sharks in Ocala, for example, says its price covers the contents, teardown, hauling and disposal. Others don't: LoadUp's shed service excludes contents. If you need the contents hauled separately, HomeGuide puts junk removal at $150 to $500 or more.

Access

Every piece has to be carried to the truck. A shed by the driveway is quick; one behind a narrow gate or down a slope takes more trips. Angi and HomeGuide both list access as a main cost factor.

Electrical and plumbing

A shed with power or water has to be safely disconnected before demolition. Angi notes most removal companies don't include this in their base quote. HomeGuide puts electricians at $50 to $130 an hour, with many charging a $150 to $200 minimum. In Denver, the city requires gas and electric cut-offs to be completed before a demolition permit is issued.

Condition and hazards

A sagging or rotten shed needs more care to take down safely, and rusted metal adds sharp edges. Angi says sheds built before 1970 with cement paneling or roofing may contain asbestos and should be inspected before work starts; it puts outdoor asbestos removal at $50 to $150 a square foot. Our guide to old shed hazards covers what to look for.

Permits

Some cities require a demolition permit for sheds; many exempt small ones. Denver, for example, says demolition of a structure of 200 square feet or less and 8 feet tall or less doesn't need a permit. Angi puts building permits at $100 to $500 where they're needed. Trash Can Willy's in New Hampshire and Massachusetts lists permit pulling, if the town requires it, as part of its service. Always confirm with your own building department. See do you need a permit to demolish a shed.

Disposal and local dump rates

Shed debris is construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and landfills price it by weight, by load or with a minimum. Those local rates flow into every quote. Some companies, like Elephants Dumpster Rental & Junk Removal in St. Petersburg, quote the shed by volume and the slab separately because "concrete prices by weight rather than volume."

Concrete slab removal cost

If you want the ground back, not just the shed gone, the slab is usually the biggest add-on.

AngiConcrete removal about $2–$6 per sq ft
HomeAdvisor$2–$6 per sq ft; slab removal $800–$2,500; reinforced concrete 50% to 100% more; hauling $150–$300 a ton
FixrAbout $4 per sq ft on average ($2 thin, up to $6 thick or with rebar); slab removal $600–$1,000
EA Junk Removal (Orange County, CA)Slab removal after a shed teardown: add $200–$400
Gulf Coast Junk Solutions (Bradenton, FL)Concrete pad: add $300–$600
DMV Go Junk (Northern Virginia)Concrete slab: $300–$800 or more, by thickness, size and reinforcement

Why slabs cost so much: weight. Normal concrete weighs about 140 to 150 pounds per cubic foot, according to The Engineering ToolBox. A 10×12 slab that's 4 inches thick is 40 cubic feet, or roughly 5,600 to 6,000 pounds. That's close to three tons of debris from one small pad.

The City of Waco landfill charges $75 a ton for C&D waste without concrete or brick, and $125 a ton with it. At $125 a ton, that 10×12 slab would cost about $350 to $375 to dump, before any labor or hauling. At Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station in California, clean concrete is $122.76 a ton.

Many homeowners leave the slab. EA Junk Removal says most homeowners leave the slab for a future garden bed or patio extension. If you might build on the spot again, a sound slab can save money. Decide before you ask for quotes so every company prices the same job.

What it costs to dump a shed yourself

If you tear the shed down yourself, the dump fee is the part you can look up. Here are C&D rates from seven facilities' own pages.

Published disposal rates for self-haul loads, checked October 7, 2026. Rates change; confirm with the facility before you go.
FacilityPublished rateConditions
City of Phoenix transfer stations, AZ$55 a ton, $40 minimumResidents with a current city services bill can dispose of up to one ton a month at no charge. Unsecured loads pay a $20 penalty.
Mesa County Landfill, CODemolition debris $32 a ton$10 minimum for up to 380 pounds. Uncovered loads are charged double.
Dem-Con Shakopee Landfill, MNDemolition and construction waste $52 a ton, plus $2 a ton tax$77 minimum plus tax. Shingles $37 a ton.
City of Waco Landfill, TXC&D $75 a ton; $125 a ton with concrete or brick$10 minimum for all users.
Austin Travis County Landfill, TX (Waste Connections)C&D $126.50 a tonTwo-ton minimum, so every load starts at $253.
Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station, CAC&D $134.40 a ton; clean concrete or clean wood $122.76 a ton$63 minimum per transaction.
Recology San Francisco Transfer Station, CA$274.57 a ton for refuse, C&D and concrete$60 minimum per load; $20 extra for an uncovered load.

For a small shed, the minimum often matters more than the per-ton rate. At Phoenix's $55 a ton, a half-ton load works out to $27.50, so you'd pay the $40 minimum. In Austin, even a light load costs $253. Call ahead and ask for the minimum and whether concrete goes in a separate area.

Ways to save on shed removal

  • Sell it or give it away. HomeGuide and Angi both suggest it: a shed in good shape may find a buyer who takes it down and hauls it off. See how to sell or give away a used shed, or how to move a shed if you want to keep it.
  • Empty it yourself. Contents can be a separate charge.
  • Leave the slab if you can use it. Slab removal is often the largest add-on.
  • Salvage metal. Angi suggests selling reclaimed lumber and metal to scrap yards.
  • Bundle other junk. Angi notes that removing other bulky items or yard waste in the same visit can save money.
  • Use resident programs if you self-haul. Phoenix residents get up to one ton a month free at city transfer stations. Check what your city offers.
  • Get two or three quotes for the same scope. Many companies quote from photos, and several advertise a small discount for booking online.

Other routes, from sale to recycling, are in our guide on how to get rid of a shed.

What a shed removal quote should include

Two quotes with the same number can cover different work. Ask each company:

  • Is disposal included, or charged on top?
  • Are the contents included?
  • Is the floor included? What happens to the slab, blocks or gravel base?
  • Does the price assume power and water are already disconnected?
  • Is there a minimum, trip or load charge?
  • Who handles a permit if one is needed?

How to get an accurate quote from photos

Most of what changes the price shows up in a few pictures:

  1. The whole shed, with its dimensions.
  2. The inside, showing contents, floor and shelving.
  3. The base: blocks, gravel, skids or a slab.
  4. The route out to where a truck can park, including the narrowest gate.
  5. Anything that stays, such as fences, plants or a slab you want kept.

Mention any power or water to the shed, and roughly how old it is.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to tear down a shed?

Among 24 removal companies that publish a shed price on their own websites, the median starting price is about $325, and most start between $150 and $500. Cost guides give wider ranges for the whole job: HomeGuide says $200 to $2,000 for the shed alone, and Angi says $250 to $3,000.

How much does it cost to remove a shed with a concrete slab?

HomeGuide puts shed and slab removal together at $1,200 to $3,500. Companies that price the slab as an add-on list it at about $200 to $800 extra, for example $200 to $400 at EA Junk Removal in Orange County and $300 to $600 at Gulf Coast Junk Solutions in Bradenton.

Is it cheaper to tear down a shed yourself?

Often, if you already own the tools and a truck. Your costs are the dump fee or a dumpster (Angi gives an average of $380 a week for a dumpster), any tools you buy or rent, and your time. Compare that total with a quote that includes disposal.

Do I need a permit to remove a shed?

It depends on your city. Denver, for example, does not require a demolition permit for a structure of 200 square feet or less and 8 feet tall or less. Larger sheds, or sheds with power or plumbing, may need one. Check with your building department before work starts.

Will junk removal companies take down a shed?

Many will. Of the junk removal and hauling companies whose shed pages we read, most offer teardown, haul-away and cleanup. Some price it as a shed job, others by how much truck space the debris fills.

Does shed removal include what's inside?

Not always. Some companies include the contents in one price; others, like LoadUp, ask you to empty the shed first. HomeGuide puts separate junk removal for contents at $150 to $500 or more.

How much does Shed Gone charge?

We don't publish a set price. Send us photos of the shed, the route out and what should stay, and we'll send a price for your job and what it includes.
