PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Denver asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
No, if the shed is 200 sq ft or smaller and 8 ft tall or shorter; Denver names sheds as an example. Bigger sheds need a demolition permit, and historic districts may need Landmark review.

No. Denver's Large Item Pickup lists construction materials, including fencing and pallets, as not accepted.
Tower Landfill (Republic Services). 2026 gate prices before fees: pickup filled to top of cab $105; filled over cab under 6 feet $120; over 6 feet or trailers $38.50 per yard (5-yard minimum); shingles $40 per yard (5+ yards); stump/concrete over 3 feet $72 per yard. Fuel, environmental and user fees are added.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Denver's demolition rules cover residential and commercial structures. A structure of 200 square feet or less and 8 feet tall or less needs no permit, and both limits apply. A bigger shed needs a full demolition permit: a state asbestos notification to CDPHE first (even if no asbestos is found), utility cut-offs, $300,000 of insurance for a homeowner doing the work, and notice to adjacent owners 10 days before demolition.
With a demolition permit, Landmark approval is not required for accessory structures unless they are in a historic district, on an individual landmark site, or 1.5 stories or taller. The city does not say whether that review also applies to a shed small enough to skip the permit, so call Landmark Preservation at 720-865-2709 before the crew comes.

For a permitted demolition, water, sewer, gas and electric service must be shut off or capped before the permit is issued. A homeowner must pass an exam before doing electrical work on a homeowner permit. Contact Colorado 811 at least three business days before digging out posts or footings; it does not locate private lines, such as a buried feed to the shed.

No. Denver Solid Waste Management collects large items every nine weeks, up to 5 items and 10 bags. Construction materials (including concrete, bricks, fencing and pallets) and hazardous materials such as paint are not accepted, and setting items out on other days counts as illegal dumping. Plan on a removal company or a self-haul.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Fees: 2026 gate prices before fees: pickup filled to top of cab $105; filled over cab under 6 feet $120; over 6 feet or trailers $38.50 per yard (5-yard minimum); shingles $40 per yard (5+ yards); stump/concrete over 3 feet $72 per yard. Fuel, environmental and user fees are added.

2400 W. Oxford Ave., Englewood, CO 80110
Accepts concrete and asphalt for recycling. It can reject loads contaminated with dirt, trash, sod or other debris, so bring slab pieces only, not mixed shed debris.
Fees: Concrete or asphalt: $33 minimum load, $53 tandem, $78 semi. Concrete with excessive steel or rebar: $83 minimum. A $12 environmental fee is added to each load; prices may change.
Before you go: Open Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 303-762-1160. Get a disposal receipt at the office before dumping.
On a landmark site or in a historic district, Landmark Preservation staff usually review the demolition of an accessory structure, and the application needs a replacement plan, such as a new accessory structure. No pre-application meeting is needed for an accessory structure. Look up your address on the city's historic landmarks map first.

Denver's Universal Recycling and Composting Ordinance applies to demolitions over 500 square feet of gross floor area. That means a waste diversion plan and a refundable deposit before the permit is issued. Most backyard sheds are far smaller, but a barn-size outbuilding could qualify.
All Recycling's North Denver yard on Washington Street lists metal sheds among the household metals it buys and is open to the public. For a broken-up slab, Oxford Recycling in Englewood takes clean concrete loads and publishes its per-load fees.

Many older Denver lots have alley access, which makes loading a shed easier. If your shed needs a demolition permit and the crew works from the alley, the city does not require the street-frontage photo for an accessory structure.
