Demolition: permit in all cases
Aurora adopted the 2021 International Residential Code, which requires a permit to demolish a building or structure. The city's Do It Right chart lists demolition as needing a permit in all cases, with no plan submittal and a framing inspection. City code exempts one-story storage sheds up to 120 square feet from permits but says nothing about tearing one down. The chart dates from March 2019.

Power and water off before the permit
Before a wrecking or demolishing permit is issued, Aurora's code requires electric lines to be cut outside the property line, gas, water and sewer lines capped, and the utility notified. The city chart also lists any electrical service change as always needing a permit.

Asbestos check for older sheds
Colorado's health department says demolition requires an inspection by a certified asbestos building inspector and a state-issued demolition permit before work begins. Ask CDPHE whether your shed falls under the rule, especially with old siding, roofing or floor tile.
Call 811 before pulling posts or a slab
Colorado law requires property owners to contact Colorado 811 at least 48 hours ahead (excluding weekends and holidays) before any digging, including concrete piers, post footings or a slab.

Will Aurora pick up shed debris?
No. Aurora does not provide trash collection; residents, HOAs and property managers hire one of the city's permitted haulers. WM, one of them, offers scheduled bulk pickup to certain customers, says accepted items vary by area and asks that long items be cut into four-foot sections. Ask your hauler before stacking boards at the curb.

A regional WM landfill that lists construction and demolition debris, municipal solid waste and yard waste among acceptable materials. It cannot take hazardous or liquid waste. Whole sheds are not mentioned, so plan to bring a dismantled load and confirm.
Fees: No public self-haul rates are published on the pages reviewed. Appliances, tires and electronics are accepted for an extra charge.

Accepts municipal solid waste, commercial waste and non-hazardous industrial waste from homes and businesses across the metro area. Its 2026 gate pricing lists demolition waste, shingles, and stumps or concrete over 3 feet across. It refuses refrigerators, tires, electronics, used oil, batteries and hazardous waste.
Fees: 2026 gate prices before fees: pickup filled to top of cab $105; filled over cab under 6 feet $120; over 6 feet or trailers $38.50 per yard (5-yard minimum); shingles $40 per yard (5+ yards); stump/concrete over 3 feet $72 per yard. Fuel, environmental and user fees are added.

Colorado Aggregate Recycling, DEN South
7230 N Jackson Gap St, Denver, CO 80249
A concrete and asphalt recycling yard on the northeast edge of the metro, near the airport. It takes concrete rubble with or without rebar or wire mesh, plus brick and block. Loads with wood, plastic, asphalt shingles, insulation or trash are treated as contaminated and rejected.
Fees: Clean concrete and clean asphalt are taken at no charge. Concrete with rebar, wire or steel costs $60 for a pickup or pickup and trailer.
Before you go: Call (983) 900-8544 before you go. Loads are inspected before dumping; dumping without inspection adds a $300 fee. Yard hours are Mon to Fri 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Three counties, one city permit office
Aurora reaches into Arapahoe, Adams and Douglas counties. Building permits for addresses inside city limits go through the city's own Building Permit Center (303.739.7420), not the counties.
The metro landfill is inside Aurora
The Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site sits at 3500 S. Gun Club Road. Arapahoe County says it is owned by the City and County of Denver and run by WM, and WM lists construction and demolition debris among accepted materials. The city and WM list different weekday closing times, so call before a late run.

A roll-off can't sit on the street
If you rent a dumpster for a DIY teardown, Aurora does not allow dumpsters or storage pods on the public street. Placing one on private property, including a driveway, goes through the city's Temporary Use Permit program.
Free drop-off for clean slab concrete
Colorado Aggregate Recycling's DEN South yard, northeast of Aurora near the airport, takes clean concrete for free and charges $60 for a pickup load with rebar or wire. Loads with wood or shingles are rejected, so keep slab pieces separate from shed debris.
