PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Lexington-Fayette asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Lexington requires a wrecking permit before demolishing any structure, with insurance, a neighbor notice and an asbestos report. The fee schedule lists 0.2% of assessed value, $100 minimum.

No. Bulky pickup is for furniture, mattresses and appliances, and building material can't go in the trash cart. Residents can rent a $90-a-day Loan-A-Box for lumber.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
City code says a permit must be obtained before wrecking, razing or moving any structure, and Building Inspection's page says you need one before demolishing any part of a building. No shed exemption for demolition is published; the under-200-square-foot exemption in the accessory structure guide covers building a storage shed, not tearing one down. The permit can't be issued sooner than three working days after you apply, and work can't start for 24 hours after it's issued. Building Inspection: 101 E. Vine St., (859) 258-3770.

Building Inspection lists a certificate of insurance naming LFUCG, a grading permit from Engineering, letters to every owner within 50 feet of the property line, an asbestos report, a letter from the owner if a contractor does the work, a sewer plug number from Water Quality, and a step-by-step demolition plan. Code sets the required liability coverage by the property's assessed value.

The City asks for an asbestos report from a private agency, and proof of abatement if it's positive. Kentucky's Division for Air Quality says asbestos removal and disposal from single-family homes or apartments of four or fewer units is not regulated under state law. For asbestos disposal, the City points residents to Republic Services at (859) 263-2000.

Not at the curb. Free bulky pickup takes items like furniture, mattresses and appliances, and the trash cart can't hold bricks, dirt or building material. For a shed's worth of lumber, residents inside the urban service boundary can book a 10-cubic-yard Loan-A-Box through LexCall (311 or 859-425-2255) for $90 a weekday. It takes lumber and small amounts of non-asbestos roofing, but not jobs done by businesses or contractors.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Lexington has no exclusive franchise for construction or demolition debris, and a search of the Urban County code found no hauler license. State rule 401 KAR 49:080 says each solid waste collector and recycler must register and report by February 1 each year to every county it serves. It doesn't say whether a crew hauling its own teardown debris counts as a collector.

Before a wrecking permit is issued, the Division of Historic Preservation gets up to three working days to check whether the structure is at least 50 years old or historically significant, on every proposed demolition. If it is, the permit can wait up to 30 more days while the structure is documented. In an H-1 historic overlay, tearing down all or part of any building or structure also needs a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Residents inside the urban service boundary can rent a city 10-cubic-yard box for $90 a weekday, which covers delivery, removal and landfill costs. Lumber, windows, small amounts of non-asbestos roofing and some concrete are allowed. The program is not for businesses or private contractors.
On the City's free trash disposal days at the Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station, household items go free, but construction debris, building material and outdoor sheds and shelters are charged at the regular gate rate.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
