SHED REMOVAL IN LOUISVILLE

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Louisville shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Louisville requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Louisville ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Louisville asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Louisville rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Metro Code requires a wrecking permit to demolish or remove any building or structure. The fee is $75 for the first 1,000 square feet; owners doing their own teardown also post a $500 bond.

City pickup

No. Metro bans construction and demolition debris from garbage and Large Item Pickup. Lumber can go to the Waste Reduction Center, where a pickup load costs $60.

Haul it yourself

Waste Reduction Center (Louisville Metro). Pickup, van, box truck or trailer up to 10 ft: $60. Pickup with a trailer up to 10 ft, or a dump truck or flatbed up to 16 ft: $120. Over 16 ft: $285. Debit or credit card only.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Jefferson County. Haulaway lists $99 to $800 and 502 Junk Dept. $150 to $695 by truck volume; Junk This Demo That starts demolition at $90.

Do I need a permit?Louisville demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A wrecking permit for any shed teardown

Metro Code §150.006 says anyone who intends to demolish or remove a building or structure must first get the required permits. No size exemption for sheds is published. The steps: post a Notice of Intent to Demolish sign facing the street ($10 at the cashier, or print your own at 11 by 17 inches in color), photograph all four sides, notify adjacent owners in writing, submit a site plan and a notarized Affidavit of Assurances. Construction Review: (502) 574-3321.

02

Owner permit or a hired crew

An owner can pull a Type C permit for a structure no more than one story, 25 feet tall and 1,500 square feet. It costs $75 for the first 1,000 square feet, plus a $500 cash or certified-check bond that is returned if the site is cleared, regraded and seeded within 60 days. The Director may waive the bond for structures without a basement. Type C is only for owners; a licensed wrecking contractor's permit is processed as Type A, and a Type A contractor must carry a $10,000 bond and insurance.

04

Asbestos

APCD says a permit and a licensed contractor are required to remove asbestos from any structure other than a private residence or an apartment building with four or fewer units. Its demolition form warns that asbestos must be removed before most demolitions. Old cement siding or felt roofing is worth testing before teardown; APCD: (502) 574-6000.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Louisville pick up shed debris?

No. Metro says construction and demolition debris are banned by ordinance from garbage and Large Item Pickup, and crews will mark the material and leave a notice. Large Item Pickup, by appointment in the Urban Services District, takes up to four whole items and won't collect a pile of lumber. Metro points lumber, drywall and flooring to the Waste Reduction Center, where fees apply.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Waste Reduction Center (Louisville Metro)

636 Meriwether Ave, Louisville, KY 40217 (entrance on Bland Street)

Metro drop-off for Jefferson County residents and businesses. It charges for loads of construction materials. It does not accept shingles, concrete, brick, mulch or dirt.

Fees: Pickup, van, box truck or trailer up to 10 ft: $60. Pickup with a trailer up to 10 ft, or a dump truck or flatbed up to 16 ft: $120. Over 16 ft: $285. Debit or credit card only.

Before you go: Open Tuesday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trucks with trailers must arrive at least 15 minutes before closing.

Outer Loop Recycling & Disposal Facility (WM)

2673 Outer Loop, Louisville, KY 40219

WM's regional landfill. It lists construction and demolition debris and municipal solid waste among accepted materials and does not take hazardous waste. Metro's Waste Reduction Center says it takes brick.

Fees: Not published. It takes check, credit or debit cards and credit accounts.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed weekends; it stops taking retail loads an hour before closing. Call (502) 966-0272 for rates.

Haz Bin (Louisville Metro)

7501 Grade Ln, Louisville, KY 40219

Free household hazardous waste drop-off for Jefferson County residents: oil-based paint, gasoline, stains, pesticides, small propane tanks and up to 25 lbs of asbestos floor tile. Not latex paint, business waste, or containers over 5 gallons or 40 lbs.

Fees: Free for residents.

Before you go: Open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep chemicals out of trash bags.

What else should I know in Louisville?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Every paid hauler needs a Metro waste hauler license

Louisville has no exclusive hauler for demolition debris. But Metro Code §51.300 says any public or private waste hauler in the business of hauling waste in Jefferson County must hold a Metro Government Waste Hauler License from the Waste Management District, and §51.503 requires its vehicles to be registered. The District's application covers haulers of construction and demolition waste and costs $100 a year plus $10 per vehicle. Missing a required license brings a civil penalty of $100 to $500 a day. The rule is written for businesses, not owners hauling their own debris.

Preservation and overlay districts get a closer look

Wrecking permits in a Landmarks or overlay district are reviewed by Urban Design staff. The listed districts include Old Louisville, Butchertown, Cherokee Triangle, Limerick, Clifton, West Main Street and Parkland. If staff find a building historically significant, the permit waits 30 days. Under Metro Code §150.110, an accessory building counts as historic only if it is over 600 square feet and 100 years old, so most sheds fall outside that hold.

Small cities and the Urban Services District

Jefferson County includes many small cities, and Construction Review says a project in one of them may need extra approvals from that city. Metro's Large Item Pickup only runs in the Urban Services District; elsewhere, residents use their private hauler, such as Republic, Rumpke or WM.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Louisville?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Jefferson County, lower if it's already taken apart. Where can I take shed debris myself?

The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Ave. (enter on Bland Street) takes loads of construction materials from Jefferson County residents. Hours are Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break, and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What about shingles, concrete and brick?

The Waste Reduction Center won't take them. It sends shingles to 3402 Vogt Ave., says Innovative Crushing & Aggregate accepts concrete, and says the Outer Loop landfill takes brick. Will the crew take the shed down or just haul it?

All seven companies listed here say they tear sheds down. 502 Junk Dept. takes sheds apart by hand and sweeps for nails. Haulaway includes cutting out concrete pads and footings, and Mattingly says it can tear out slabs around the shed. JDog calls its work light demo and says it doesn't tear down houses.

What do I do with paint, gas and chemicals from the shed?

Jefferson County residents can drop household hazardous waste at the Haz Bin, 7501 Grade Ln., free, Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It takes oil-based paint, gasoline, stains, pesticides and small propane tanks, and up to 25 pounds of asbestos floor tile. It doesn't take latex paint; dry it out and put it in the trash.

Do I need to call 811 before pulling posts or footings?

Yes, if you're digging. Kentucky 811 says you need to contact 811 before you dig, no matter how big the job is.
