PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Metairie asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Jefferson Parish requires a building permit to demolish any building or structure. The base fee is $36 for the first $1,000 of value plus $5 per added $1,000. Call 504-736-6957.

Mostly no. Parish bulk pickup won't take any waste a contractor generates. A homeowner's own debris must be in 4-foot, 75-pound bundles, with loose pieces bagged or in containers.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The Parish building code makes it unlawful to tear down or demolish any structure without a valid building permit, and says anyone who wants to demolish a building or structure must apply first. The Parish's permit page says storage sheds of any size need a building permit, and its list of work that needs no permit doesn't include demolition. Apply online through MyGovernmentOnline. The code sets a base fee of $36 for the first $1,000 of project value plus $5 per added $1,000, and lists no separate demolition fee.

The Parish says anyone who removes an electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system must be licensed and file for inspection before work starts. Electrical work must be filed by a Jefferson Parish licensed electrician, and plumbing and gas work by a State Plumbing Board licensed plumber or gas fitter. That covers cutting and capping a shed's circuit or water line.
In the Metairie Ridge Tree Preservation District, excavation and any other activity that may affect tree root systems needs a Tree Preservation permit from the Parkways Department. Digging out shed piers or a slab near large trees there should be checked first.
Only a homeowner's own small, prepared pieces. The Parish says any waste generated by a contractor isn't eligible for pickup. Parish code counts wood, siding, roofing shingles and concrete from residential repair work as construction debris, but not debris from demolishing a primary residential structure. Fence boards and similar debris must be stacked or bundled no longer than 4 feet and no heavier than 75 pounds, concrete under 6 inches and loose debris like sheetrock must be in containers, and piles can't top 6 cubic yards.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Metairie is an unincorporated community in Jefferson Parish, so there is no city hall, city permit office or city trash service. Jefferson Parish's Building Permits Department issues demolition permits (504-736-6957 on the East Bank), and the Parish's Department of Environmental Affairs runs curbside pickup, drop-off sites and the Parish landfill (504-731-4612).

No franchised hauler for demolition debris was found in Jefferson Parish. Parish Code Sec. 16-6(b) says no one may collect or transport solid waste commercially in the parish without filing a solid waste notification with Louisiana DEQ and getting a transporter identification number. People hauling waste from their own household are exempt. The code doesn't say whether a crew hauling a customer's shed debris counts as commercial transport, but the wording covers it.

In the Old Metairie Neighborhood Conservation District most work needs Old Metairie Commission review, but the Parish code lets the Building Permits Director approve demolition of accessory structures and fences without a site plan. Work there and in the Metairie Ridge Tree Preservation District still needs a building permit, and anything that may affect tree roots needs a Parkways tree permit (504-349-5800).
