PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Clifton asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, most likely. New Jersey makes it unlawful to demolish a structure without a permit, and Clifton's fee schedule lists a $75 demolition permit for accessory structures at homes.

Partly. Bulk pickup takes lumber cut to 4-foot lengths and tied, up to 2 items on your first collection day of the week. Brick and concrete aren't allowed in garbage.

Others here: JunkDoctors lists shed demo and removal from $835. Junkin Irishman and Got Trash NJ quote each job.
The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.14(a), it is unlawful to demolish a structure without first applying to the construction official and getting a permit. Clifton's code sets a $75 demolition permit fee for all accessory structures to residential (Group R) uses. The fee section was last amended in 2012, so confirm the current amount with the Building Department at 973-470-5809.

The state waives the building permit for garden-type sheds of 200 sq ft or less and 10 feet or less tall, with no water, gas, oil or sewer connection. That waiver is written for building work, not demolition, and an electrical permit is still needed when there is wiring.
When a contractor does home improvement work, which includes demolishing a structure on a home lot, New Jersey requires it to be registered and to put its registration number on the permit application. That is on top of Clifton's own contractor license.

New Jersey law requires anyone digging to call New Jersey One Call at least three full business days before starting. That covers pulling posts, piers or anchors.
Only in small amounts. Clifton's bulk waste pickup includes wooden cabinets and doors, tables and lumber cut to 4-foot lengths and tied. Bulk goes out after 6 p.m. the night before your first garbage day of the week, with a limit of 2 items. Don't put bulk out Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Dirt, stones, brick, concrete and hazardous waste can't go in the garbage. A whole shed is more than this allows, so plan on a hauler or a dumpster. Call Public Works at 973-470-2239 with questions.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Clifton code bars anyone from the business of demolishing buildings or structures, where a permit is required, until the city's Building Inspector licenses them. The application includes a police background check. Owners who do and supervise their own work are exempt.
Clifton's code makes recycling all construction and demolition debris, proven with weight slips to the Building Department, a condition of any permanent certificate of occupancy. Its definition covers brick, cement, asphalt roofing, scrap metal, window glass and wood. Keep the receipts from wherever the shed goes in case the Building Department asks.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
Start a quote from photos ↗JunkDoctors publishes a shed price for North Jersey: shed demo and removal starts at $835, with slabs and footings extra unless agreed. Junkin Irishman and Got Trash NJ quote each job. None says its price covers Clifton's demolition permit.
