PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Toms River asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Likely, for most sheds. New Jersey's code makes it unlawful to demolish a structure without a permit. Sheds 200 sq ft or less are exempt from building permits, but that rule doesn't mention demolition.
No. Toms River won't pick up construction or demolition debris at the curb. Residents may bring two 35-gallon containers of it to the Recycling Convenience Center twice a month.
Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.
Others here: No company publishes a shed price. Alco Junk Removal prices by truck volume, from $375 for a quarter load to $875 for a full truck. Others quote each job.
The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Under the state Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.14(a), it is unlawful to demolish a structure without first applying to the construction official and getting a permit. For a demolition, the site plan must show what is coming down and what stays.

N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.14(b)8 waives the building permit for garden-type sheds 200 sq ft or less and 10 feet or less tall, at a home, with no water, gas, oil or sewer connection. It is written for building work and doesn't say demolition. An electrical permit is still required when there is wiring. Ask the Toms River Building Department (Town Hall, 732-341-1000) how it treats tearing one down.

When a contractor does home improvement work, including demolition of a structure on a home lot, New Jersey requires the contractor to be registered and to put the registration number on the permit application.
New Jersey law requires anyone digging, including a homeowner's contractor, to call New Jersey One Call at least three full business days before starting. That covers pulling posts, piers or anchors.
No. The township will not pick up construction or demolition debris at the curb. Residents get one bulk pickup a month for items that don't fit the robo can, but not move-outs or large volumes. For small amounts, residents may take up to two 35-gallon containers of construction debris to the Recycling Convenience Center twice a month; loose debris is refused. Larger amounts must go to an approved landfill, such as the Ocean County Landfill on Route 70 in Manchester, hauled by you, a contractor or a licensed hauler.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
Start a quote from photos ↗None of the companies that serve Toms River publishes a shed-specific price. Alco Junk Removal lists volume pricing, from $375 for a quarter load to $875 for a full truck. A-Lot-Cleaner publishes dumpster rentals from $435 if you tear the shed down yourself. The rest quote each job.
When you compare quotes, ask for one written total that covers dismantling, hauling, disposal fees and cleanup, and ask whether the contents, the floor and the slab or footings are included. What shed removal costs ↗

COMMON QUESTIONS
Yes. The Toms River Recycling Convenience Center takes windows and doors and metal year-round, plus small amounts of cinder block and brick from residents only. Bring proof of residency in a pickup or smaller; contractors and commercial vehicles are turned away.
Maybe. The metal pickup is for items made mostly of metal, such as railings, poles and appliances. It doesn't name sheds, so call 732-255-1000, ext. 8170, describe the cut-down panels and get on the list.
A-Lot-Cleaner in Toms River lists a 10/11-yard dumpster for $435, including 1.25 tons, for a 7-day rental. Mileage fees may apply. Shingles and concrete add weight fast, so ask about overweight charges.
Not that we could find. The Ocean County Landfill is privately owned and not part of the county's solid waste department, and it doesn't post a public rate online. Call 732-323-8528 before you load up.
