PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Portland asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, for larger sheds. Portland requires a permit to demolish any structure over 200 square feet or taller than 15 feet. Smaller sheds aren't on that list; confirm at 503-823-7300.
Not confirmed. Portland's bulky pickup price list covers furniture and appliances, not lumber or shed panels; your garbage company prices unlisted items. Self-haul to Metro Central starts at $51.

Metro Central Transfer Station. Garbage: $51 minimum for loads up to 240 pounds, then $176.70 per ton. Clean unpainted lumber, separated: $42 minimum, $97.13 per ton. Public loads over 240 pounds add a $30 staffed-scale fee. Uncovered loads pay $25 per ton more ($3 on minimum loads). Card payments carry a 2% fee.

Others here: Junk Hubris lists $300 to $500 for sheds under 100 sq ft, up to $1,000+ for 150 to 200+ sq ft. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for Multnomah County. Others quote each shed.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Portland Permitting & Development's permit list says you need a permit to build, demolish or move any structure over 200 square feet or with a height over 15 feet (on parcels over 2 acres, with 20 feet of clearance, the size limit is 400 square feet). Its demolition rule says that, generally, a structure that needs a permit to build needs one to demolish. On a lot with 3 or 4 dwelling units, an accessory structure over 120 square feet needs a demolition permit. The 2026 fee schedule lists a $1,352 demolition fee for a residential building without a basement, plus sewer cap, erosion control and site review fees; it doesn't say whether that fee applies to a shed. Questions: 503-823-7300.

Portland's 35-day residential demolition delay does not apply to garages or other outbuildings. Its deconstruction law covers houses and duplexes built in 1940 or earlier and excludes accessory structures such as garages. The lead-paint site-control rules for residential demolitions reach detached accessory structures only when they are over 200 square feet and sit on a lot with 1 to 4 homes.

Oregon DEQ requires an accredited inspector's asbestos survey before any demolition of a facility, which its rules define to include any structure. Homes with up to four units built after January 1, 2004 are exempt. DEQ's homeowner page puts it as a survey before demolishing a residence built before 2004. Whether an older detached shed counts as part of the home is not spelled out. Portland won't issue a demolition permit without the required asbestos documents.

Changing or repairing a hard-wired electrical system needs a Portland electrical permit, and a homeowner may do the work only on a home they own and live in. Before pulling posts or footings, contact Oregon 811 to have buried lines marked.

Not confirmed. Your garbage company will pick up bulky items at the curb for a trip fee plus a charge per item, and the City's price list names furniture, mattresses and appliances, not lumber or shed panels. For items not on the list, the garbage company sets the price by size or type, and the City suggests asking whether a rented container would cost less. Ask your garbage company before setting shed pieces out.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Portland gives garbage companies franchises for home garbage routes, and no one else may collect residential solid waste without one. The code exempts a contractor hired to demolish a structure when it hauls the waste from that job, and anyone doing a one-time clean-out removal at a home. Commercial collection needs a permit from the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. Demolition contractors hauling their own job waste are exempt, but a subcontracted service hired only to haul construction waste must hold the permit. Self-haul is allowed. Questions: Garbage and Recycling, 503-823-7202 or wasteinfo@portlandoregon.gov.

Metro charges clean wood at a lower rate than garbage, but only raw dimensional lumber kept apart from other debris and free of paint, stain or varnish. Painted siding, plywood, OSB and paneling are charged as garbage. Most old shed walls will be garbage; unpainted framing pulled out separately may qualify.
Metro's transfer stations refuse asbestos-containing material and flat or built-up roofing. Leaving asbestos at a station can cost you the testing and removal, which Metro says can exceed $3,000. Asphalt shingles aren't named either way, so ask before you load them.
Metro takes curbside-type recyclables, including copper and ferrous metals, free from residential customers, and it gives a small rebate when you sort recyclables out of a load. Old paint, fuel and garden chemicals from the shed go to the hazardous waste facility at the same sites, free for households up to 35 gallons.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
