PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Providence asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Rhode Island's residential code requires a permit to demolish a structure; only one-story sheds of 64 sq ft or less are listed as permit-exempt. Providence's demolition fee is $85 up to two stories.

No. Free bulky pickup is for furniture and appliances. Homeowners may put small lumber scraps in the trash cart if the lid closes; a whole shed needs a hauler or dumpster.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery (Central Landfill campus), Residential Recycling Area. Individual residents pay the commercial gate rate: $115 a ton with a $65 minimum for trash and C&D. Clean concrete, asphalt, brick and rock is $20 a ton; scrap metal is free. A surcharge applies to beams or poles over 4 feet, and a $6 host community fee may apply per vehicle.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Rhode Island's one- and two-family code, based on the 2021 IRC, says anyone who intends to demolish a building or structure must first apply for a permit. The state's list of exempt work includes one-story detached accessory structures of 64 square feet or less, and it doesn't say whether that covers teardown, so ask before skipping a permit for a very small shed. Providence charges $85 to demolish a structure of two stories or less, and working without a permit adds the maximum fee the state code allows. Apply with the Department of Inspection and Standards, now at 780 Allens Avenue.

When anyone applies to demolish a structure, Providence code has the building inspector require a plan to protect the lot within 60 days: grading and seeding, gravel or paving, or rebuilding. Ask whether that applies to a shed footprint in your yard.
Rhode Island's asbestos licensing and abatement-plan rules don't apply to private residences (one- and two-family homes and similar). For regulated buildings, licensed contractors file a start-work notice at least 10 working days ahead. Resource Recovery rejects any load containing asbestos waste, and J.R. Vinagro takes no asbestos of any kind, so old cement-board siding or roofing needs a separate plan.

No. Waste Management collects bulky items free for buildings with six or fewer units, but bulky means furniture and large appliances, up to three items per unit, and only from the curb. Homeowners may put small amounts of lumber scraps or drywall in the trash cart if the lid closes. A shed's walls, roof and floor need a removal company, a dumpster or a trip to a drop-off.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Fees: Individual residents pay the commercial gate rate: $115 a ton with a $65 minimum for trash and C&D. Clean concrete, asphalt, brick and rock is $20 a ton; scrap metal is free. A surcharge applies to beams or poles over 4 feet, and a $6 host community fee may apply per vehicle.

Providence makes it unlawful to carry garbage or ordinary waste over city streets without a license from the Director of Public Works for each vehicle. A for-profit hauler pays $50 a year plus $50 for each extra truck, and licenses expire June 30. Hauling without one carries a $200 fine. The ordinance says "any person" and doesn't spell out whether it covers a crew carrying one shed's debris or a homeowner hauling their own. No rule giving one company exclusive rights to demolition debris was found; the City tells contractors to arrange a private hauler or dumpster.

Providence has nine local historic districts with about 2,635 properties. Inside them, the Historic District Commission regulates the demolition of any structure or appurtenance that changes a property's exterior, which can include a shed. A demolition application costs $400 and must be filed at least 30 days before the commission's monthly meeting. The City's GIS mapper shows whether a lot is in a district.

Before a structure is completely removed, Providence code requires notice to the City Clerk, mailed notice to owners within 200 feet, a posted sign and a rat-abatement invoice from a licensed pest control company. That section says "structure" doesn't include accessory structures, and the City's raze checklist is written for principal structures, so a backyard shed falls outside it.

Providence lets renters and homeowners put small amounts of construction material from household projects, such as drywall and small lumber scraps, in the gray trash cart as long as the lid closes. Contractors can't use curbside carts for construction material and must arrange a private hauler or dumpster.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
