SHED REMOVAL IN BIRMINGHAM

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Birmingham shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Birmingham requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Birmingham ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Birmingham asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Birmingham rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Birmingham's code bars tearing down any building or structure without a demolition permit; a Class I permit is $150. Ask Permits at 205-254-2904 about the small accessory-structure exemption.

City pickup

No. Public Works says the City will not haul building material cut down by private contractors. Furniture and appliances stored in the shed can be stacked out for scheduled bulk trash.

Haul it yourself

Eastern Area Landfill (City of Birmingham). Not published online. City code has Public Works set landfill charges and post them at each landfill, and caps the fee for a resident's own domestic garbage or rubbish at $5 per vehicle, or $10 with a trailer.

4 drop-off options →

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Jefferson County. J&F Haul and Deliver's construction-debris list tops out at $875 for a full load, citing a shed demolition; others quote free.

Do I need a permit?Birmingham demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A demolition permit comes first

Birmingham's building code says no building may be wrecked, demolished or torn down in the city limits without a permit from the Building Official. Class I covers anything two stories or less and up to 100,000 cubic feet, which covers a backyard shed, and costs $150. The application asks for the building's type, dimensions and location. The code also requires a surety bond before a demolition permit is issued: $2,000 for a single-family residence.

02

Utilities off and lines located

No demolition work may start until the utility companies have disconnected every utility to the structure. A building sewer must be plugged through Jefferson County Environmental Services, inspected and approved first. The code also points applicants to the state law on locating underground utilities, so call 811 before pulling posts or footings.

03

Slab out, lot graded

Once a building or structure is demolished, the permit holder must leave the lot safe and clean: organic material, trash and weeds removed, holes filled with inorganic fill under 8 inches of earth, and all concrete slabs removed with the lot graded so water won't stand.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Birmingham pick up shed debris?

No. Public Works says the City will not haul building material or trees cut down by private contractors. Bulk trash runs on a posted neighborhood schedule, and the City code lets bulky objects such as furniture or appliances go out neatly stacked, so the shed's old contents can go that way. Set bulk trash out by 6 a.m. on your collection day.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Eastern Area Landfill (City of Birmingham)

2787 Alton Dr., Birmingham, AL

City-run landfill operated by the Department of Public Works. The City doesn't publish online which materials it takes, so confirm that shed lumber, siding and shingles are accepted before you load up.

Fees: Not published online. City code has Public Works set landfill charges and post them at each landfill, and caps the fee for a resident's own domestic garbage or rubbish at $5 per vehicle, or $10 with a trailer.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon. Call Public Works at (205) 254-6316 to confirm what it accepts and the rate.

Mt. Olive Landfill (Jefferson County)

101 Barber Blvd, Gardendale, AL 35071

Landfill that Jefferson County lists for residents' household waste and debris, with a residential convenience center. The County doesn't publish whether it takes construction and demolition debris.

Fees: Not published; the County says to call about fees.

Before you go: Call 659-216-8170 for hours, rates and whether shed debris is accepted. Cover your load; the County says uncovered loads can be fined.

Shelby County Landfill

401 Landfill Road, Columbiana, AL 35051

County landfill that prices municipal and construction and demolition (C&D) waste together, so shed lumber, siding and shingles fit. It refuses hazardous waste, car batteries, tires and liquid paint.

Fees: C&D waste is $30 a ton from inside Shelby County and $45 a ton from outside it. A pickup truck loaded no higher than the cab is $14; a car, van or SUV is $10. Rates effective Oct. 1, 2023, including the state's $1-a-ton fee.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; closed Sunday and major holidays.

SA Recycling (Vanderbilt Road)

2020 Vanderbilt Rd, Birmingham, AL 35234

Scrap metal yard that buys steel, aluminum, copper, cast iron, stainless steel and other metals. Fits a cut-down metal shed, not wood or shingles.

Fees: No fee; it pays for scrap metal at its posted prices.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon. Call 205-841-6706 to confirm it takes small loads from the public.

What else should I know in Birmingham?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

No franchised hauler for shed debris; crews need a City business license

Birmingham's solid waste chapter has no franchise or private hauler permit for demolition debris. The City licenses commercial solid waste facilities and transfer stations through the Council, not the crews that haul to them. The building code does require every contractor working under a permit to pay City license fees and taxes. Public Works says the City won't haul building material cut down by private contractors, so the crew that tears a shed down takes the debris away.

Local historic districts review demolition permits

The City runs 44 historic districts. In its local historic districts, such as Highland Park, Forest Park, Norwood and Avondale Park, the Design Review Committee must review any change that needs a demolition permit. The City's design review manual says a denied demolition permit can be held up for as long as 12 months. Call Historic Preservation Manager Hannah Garmon at 205-254-2424 before you apply.

County Health runs the asbestos rules

The Jefferson County Department of Health enforces the county's air pollution rules, which require an asbestos inspection before any demolition or renovation. Notice is required for every demolition of commercial buildings or residential buildings with more than four units; a home shed isn't on that list, but the inspection rule covers any demolition. Ask the Air & Radiation Protection Division at (205) 930-1276.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

What does shed removal cost in Birmingham?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Jefferson County, lower if it's already taken apart. J&F Haul and Deliver quotes a shed on site as one job, covering the demolition, the contents, hauling and a clean pad; its construction-debris list gives $875 for a full load with a shed demolition as the example. LP Junk Removal's general loads run from $100 to $450 and up. Down South Junk Removal, Pop and Sons, Big Dig Demolition and College HUNKS give free quotes.

Is a small shed exempt from the permit?

It isn't clear. The demolition section says no building or structure may be torn down without a permit. A separate list of work that needs no permit includes accessory structures for one- and two-family homes under 200 square feet when the Planning Division approves. The code doesn't say whether that applies to tearing one down, so call the permit office at 205-254-2904 before you start.

Can I haul the debris myself?

Yes. The City's Eastern Area Landfill at 2787 Alton Dr. is open weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday mornings; the City code has rates posted at the landfill. Shelby County's landfill in Columbiana publishes a C&D rate of $45 a ton for out-of-county loads. Jefferson County lists Mt. Olive Landfill in Gardendale. Cover your load either way.

Where can a metal shed go?

To a scrap yard. SA Recycling on Vanderbilt Road buys steel, aluminum and other metals and is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday mornings. Strip off wood floors and shingles first. J&F Haul and Deliver also says it recycles the metal sheds it removes.

What happens to the concrete slab?

The City's demolition rules say all concrete slabs must be removed and the lot graded after a structure comes down, so plan for the pad. Big Dig Demolition breaks up and hauls slabs, and J&F Haul and Deliver says it leaves the pad clean. Ask any crew whether its quote includes breaking out the slab.

Which crews take the shed apart?

J&F Haul and Deliver dismantles wood, metal and vinyl sheds and loads whatever is inside. LP Junk Removal tears sheds down and leaves a cleared space. Down South Junk Removal takes sheds apart piece by piece and cleans up after. Pop and Sons dismantles wood, metal and plastic sheds. Big Dig Demolition lists sheds and outbuildings among the structures it demolishes. College HUNKS lists storage sheds among the items it hauls.
