PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Fremont asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, for sheds over 120 square feet. Fremont's demolition checklist requires a separate permit to remove a detached accessory structure that size. For smaller sheds, ask Building & Safety at 510-494-4460.

No. Republic's free bulky pickups for Fremont homes refuse construction and demolition debris and concrete, and no single item may exceed 150 pounds.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Fremont's June 2026 demolition checklist lists "removal of detached accessory structures with a floor area greater than 120 square feet" among projects that need their own building permit. Only a California licensed contractor or the property owner can pull it. The submittal asks for an Air District job number, a PG&E letter confirming gas and electric are disconnected, a Union Sanitary District letter if services are capped, and a Waste Handling Plan registered through Green Halo. The flat application fee is $153 per record; plan review and inspection are based on valuation, plus a 15% community planning fee and a 3% technology fee.

The Bay Area Air District must be notified at least 10 business days before every demolition, whatever the asbestos content, and its FAQ says a demolition job number is required for every demolition of a load-supporting structure. Homes with four or fewer units can give 72 hours' notice by paying an extra fee. Its rule drops the full survey for residential buildings of four or fewer units but still requires testing if cement siding, stucco or resilient flooring will be disturbed.

Fremont's permit-exemption handout lists one-story tool and storage sheds up to 120 square feet as exempt from building permits. That handout is about building, so it isn't a demolition rule. The Building FAQ says any electrical, mechanical or plumbing work tied to an accessory structure needs a permit regardless of size, so have a licensed electrician deal with a live shed circuit.

Not as a teardown. Republic Services gives Fremont single-family homes two free bulky pickups a year, booked at least two weeks ahead at 510-657-3500, set out in a 6x6x6 area at the curb. Its list of items it won't collect includes construction and demolition debris, concrete and anything over 150 pounds. The city's own FAQ says the same about C&D debris. Shed debris needs a Republic debris box, a hauler or a trip to Boyce Road.

Fremont's code makes Republic Services the exclusive franchise collector and says no one else may charge a fee to collect or haul municipal solid waste. The same section lets a person in the construction or demolition business self-haul the C&D debris from their own job, as long as the hauling is incidental to the demolition work. The city's C&D page lists two ways to remove project waste: a Republic debris box, or self-haul using your own employees, vehicles and equipment to an approved recycling facility.

Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
Start a quote from photos ↗LoadUp's Fremont shed page shows a $94 to $1,559 range and sets the real price at booking.
