SHED REMOVAL IN OAKLAND

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Oakland shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Oakland requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Oakland asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Oakland rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Oakland code makes it unlawful to demolish any structure without a demolition permit, and every demolition needs Planning approval. The 2026-27 fee is $805.93 plus 11 cents a square foot.

City pickup

Partly. WM's bulky pickup, included with trash service, takes up to 4 cubic yards, including home remodeling debris, painted wood and scrap metal. It refuses concrete, dirt, rocks and fiberglass.

Haul it yourself

WM Davis Street Transfer Station. Mixed C&D is $61 per cubic yard (the minimum) for small loads and $303 per ton for large or heavy loads. Clean wood with no paint, stain or treatment is $64 per cubic yard minimum or $147 per ton. Clean concrete under 24 inches is $250 per ton. A $300 cash deposit is required for weighed loads. Rates are from a sheet dated January 1, 2025.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for Oakland shed removal, set at booking. The other companies listed quote each job after a photo or visit.

Do I need a permit?Oakland demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A demolition permit and Planning approval

Oakland code says it is unlawful to demolish any structure without a demolition permit, and the City's demolition page says all demolitions need Planning approval and a building permit before work starts. Accessory structures apply through the single-family permit path. Permits go to licensed contractors or the owner. The 2026-27 fee schedule lists $805.93 per permit plus $0.11 a square foot. Permit Center: (510) 238-3891.

02

Bond and posting can be waived for small structures

An owner without a state demolition license normally posts a $2,000 completion bond, and the work must finish within 90 days. The Building Official can waive the bond for small and unimportant structures, or a one-story nonresidential wood-frame building up to 600 square feet. The rule to post five notices for 30 days doesn't apply to small or unimportant structures.

03

Air District, lead paint and a recycling plan

Oakland's permit application needs the Bay Area Air District's asbestos demolition acknowledgment and job number. The Air District must be notified 10 business days before every demolition, or 72 hours with an extra fee for homes of four or fewer units. Projects that disturb paint on pre-1978 structures need a lead-based paint work plan. All demolitions need an approved recycling plan (WRRP) in Green Halo; online review is $239.03.

04

Wiring and digging

Oakland requires a permit before you install, change, fix or replace electrical systems, separate from the building permit, so have a shed circuit made safe by a licensed electrician. Before pulling posts or footings, call USA North 811 two working days ahead. It won't mark a private line to a shed.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Oakland pick up shed debris?

Partly. WM's bulky service is included with trash service and booked at 1-888-WM-BULKY. Each household gets one curbside pickup and one drop-off at Davis Street in San Leandro, each up to 4 cubic yards. Both lists accept home remodeling debris, painted wood and scrap metal; curbside clean wood must be bundled. Neither takes concrete, dirt or rock, and curbside refuses fiberglass. A whole shed is often more than 4 cubic yards, and neither list names sheds.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Oakland?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only City-franchised haulers may carry demolition debris

Oakland code makes it unlawful for anyone but holders of a City non-exclusive C&D franchise (NEF) to collect or haul construction and demolition debris, and the City says this includes demolition contractors. The franchise is open to any company: a $500 application, City insurance terms and a $75.47 fee per load. Exceptions in the code cover an owner hauling debris from their own property, and a contractor hauling debris its own work created in a fixed-body truck, with its own crew and no separate hauling fee. Fines for using an unauthorized hauler start at $100 per incident plus a $153.68 processing fee. Questions: (510) 238-7283.

Hire from the City's lists and ask for dump receipts

Oakland posts two lists: haulers with franchises to carry C&D debris, and junk haulers with active Oakland business licenses. None of the shed companies on this page appears on the franchise list, so ask how they'll handle the debris. The City says to request dump receipts before paying, since a cheap job may end up illegally dumped, and you can be fined.

Concrete and clean wood can't go to the landfill

Oakland Recycles says projects must recycle all asphalt, concrete, rock and dirt, which can't be mixed into C&D or trash loads. Clean wood and lumber scraps are banned from the landfill, and projects must recycle at least 65% of everything else. Sort a shed's slab, clean framing and metal apart from shingles and trash.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Oakland?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 and gives the price at booking. Diaz Hauling, All American Hauling and Junksters give free quotes.

Can I haul the debris myself?

Yes, as the owner. Oakland code exempts debris an owner hauls from their own property to a processing or disposal site. You still follow the recycling plan, and the debris must go to a facility with third-party verified recycling rates, such as Davis Street or Bee Green.

Where does each load go, and what does it cost?

Bee Green in East Oakland charges the public $230 a ton for mixed C&D, $155 for clean wood and $170 for concrete or brick, with a $60 minimum. Davis Street in San Leandro charges $61 a cubic yard for small C&D loads and $303 a ton for heavy ones, and wants a $300 cash deposit for weighed loads.

Who tears it down, and who only hauls?

Diaz Hauling, All American Hauling, A&J Hauling, Junksters, Bay Area Wide Hauling and Fast Haul all describe demolishing sheds and hauling the debris. Diaz lists a state contractor license. LoadUp says light disassembly may be needed and jobs needing heavy machinery may be outside its scope.

What happens to the concrete pad?

Ask before you book. All American Hauling lists foundation pulling as an option, and Fast Haul does concrete breakup. Oakland requires concrete to be recycled. Argent Materials and Bee Green's Coliseum Way yard both take concrete in East Oakland.

Does an old shed need an asbestos check?

The Air District needs notice before every demolition. For homes with four or fewer units, Rule 11-2 drops the full survey but requires testing if cement siding, stucco or similar materials will be disturbed. Bee Green won't take asbestos in roofing loads.
