SHED REMOVAL IN LOS ANGELES

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Los Angeles shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Los Angeles requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Los Angeles asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Los Angeles rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. LADBS says no one may demolish any building or structure without a permit, and the city's permit-exemption list has no shed size cutoff. Ask 311 or (213) 473-3231 before starting.

City pickup

No for teardown debris. LA Sanitation's free bulky pickup refuses construction materials, though it lists large wood pieces or doors. Call 1-800-773-2489 before setting out shed panels.

Haul it yourself

American Reclamation. Not published. Payment is cash, card or approved credit; certified weight tickets are given for every load.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: Prestige charges a $100 to $350 demo fee plus $245 to $275 per quarter truck. 911 Junk California lists $400 to $800+. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 at booking.

Do I need a permit?Los Angeles demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A demolition permit, with no small-shed exemption

City code says no one may demolish or remove any building or structure without a permit (LAMC 91.106.1.1). The list of work exempt from permits, amended in December 2025, has no storage-shed entry. It does exempt work valued at $2,500 or less unless it affects structural stability or public safety, but it doesn't say that covers a teardown. LADBS requires a pre-inspection before it issues the permit, and a shed can share one permit with the house's other demolition work on the same lot.

02

Who can pull the permit

LADBS issues demolition permits to a licensed wrecking contractor (C-21) or general engineering contractor (A). An owner who owns the building and the lot may demolish a one- or two-story wood-frame building with spans of 25 feet or less, which fits most wood sheds. Call for an inspection at least 24 hours before work starts.

03

Asbestos survey and notice first

LADBS won't issue a demolition permit without proof of asbestos notification, or the applicant's statement that it doesn't apply. South Coast AQMD Rule 1403 covers residential structures and requires an asbestos survey by a certified consultant before any demolition. 911 Junk California's guide warns that older sheds, especially pre-1980s, can contain asbestos in roofing or siding.

04

Sewer, wiring and digging

If the shed has a sewer line, you need a sewer cap (plumbing) permit before the demolition permit, and the cap must be inspected before it's covered. LADBS requires an electrical permit for any electrical work. Before pulling posts or footings, contact DigAlert (811) and wait for the marks; utilities only mark lines they own, so a buried feed to the shed won't be marked.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Los Angeles pick up shed debris?

Not as a teardown. LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is free and unlimited on your trash day, with at least one business day's notice, and it lists large wood pieces or doors. But it refuses construction materials, and MyLA311 says construction material is the homeowner's or contractor's job to remove. Mixed shed debris needs a hauler or a trip to a C&D facility.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

American Reclamation

4560 Doran St., Los Angeles, CA 90039

A certified mixed C&D processor that lists wood waste, concrete, brick, metal, asphalt and dirt among the C&D materials it accepts. Its chipping operation limits wood pieces to under 4 feet long and 8 inches across, or oversize charges apply.

Fees: Not published. Payment is cash, card or approved credit; certified weight tickets are given for every load.

Before you go: Call (888) 999-9330 for current rates before you go. All loads are inspected and weighed in and out on public truck scales.

South Gate Transfer Station (LA County Sanitation Districts)

9530 Garfield Avenue, South Gate, CA 90280

A public transfer station that accepts only non-hazardous municipal solid and inert waste. It does not name sheds or demolition debris, so bring a dismantled, sorted load with no paint, chemicals or liquids, and confirm first.

Fees: Municipal solid and inert waste is $123.12 per ton, with a 1-ton minimum charge (rates effective July 15, 2026). Hard-to-handle bulky items are $138.12 per ton. Uncovered loads that can spill litter pay a $5.40 surcharge.

Before you go: Open Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.; vehicles unloaded by hand are not allowed after 4:30 p.m. Pay by cash, card or debit; no checks. Scale house: (562) 908-4288, ext. 4731.

Sunshine Canyon Landfill (Republic Services)

14747 San Fernando Road, Sylmar, CA 91342

Public customers can drop off without an appointment. Its rate sheet defines municipal solid waste to include construction and demolition wastes. No hazardous waste or liquids, including paint cans, batteries and asbestos.

Fees: MSW is $120 per ton with a one-ton minimum, plus a $19.71 environmental fee per load (rates as of July 1, 2024). Untarped loads pay $175. A safety vest and hard hat are required, or $12.50 each.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to noon. Bring a completed Origin Report Form. Hand-unloaded loads must be on the scales by 5 p.m. weekdays; cash and card customers by 11 a.m. Saturday. Call (818) 362-2124.

What else should I know in Los Angeles?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only City-permitted haulers may carry demolition debris

Los Angeles requires anyone who collects, removes or hauls construction and demolition debris in the city, including contractors and removal companies, to hold an AB 939 Compliance Permit from LA Sanitation. Permitted haulers must take mixed debris to a City-certified C&D processor; a load can go elsewhere only if two certified processors turn it down. The one exemption is a homeowner who does the work at their own home and hauls the debris in their own vehicle. The code's exception for businesses that haul small amounts incidentally leaves out demolition debris, and sorted recyclables taken to a recycler are exempt from the certified-processor rule. RecycLA, the city's franchise for businesses and apartments, does not cover demolition debris, so any company can haul it once it has the permit. A removal company like Shed Gone needs this permit to haul shed debris in LA, and fines run up to $5,000 per load not taken to a certified processor. Questions: LA Sanitation, (213) 485-1374 or sansrcrd_cdrecycling@lacity.org.

Old sheds can trigger a 30-day neighbor notice

LADBS won't issue a demolition permit for a building over 45 years old until it has mailed notice to abutting owners and occupants, the Council District office and the Neighborhood Council, at least 30 days ahead. You also post an 11 x 17 inch placard near the front property line. Sites in a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) or with a historic monument need a clearance first.

CLARTS won't take shed debris

The city's Central LA Recycling & Transfer Station on Washington Boulevard is open to residents, but it lists construction and demolition waste, concrete and scrap metal as prohibited. Take shed debris to a certified C&D processor instead.

Sorting the pile can cut the bill

LA Sanitation's C&D guide says sorting materials at the job site for a recycler can save money, and that metal can sometimes be sold. Stack clean wood, metal panels and concrete chunks apart from shingles and trash. The guide lists recyclers by material and says to call before taking anything in.

Paint and chemicals go to a S.A.F.E. Center

Old paint, stain, weed killer, pool chemicals and propane cylinders often sit in sheds. LA Sanitation's S.A.F.E. Centers take household hazardous waste, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit. Clear these out before the crew arrives; Sunshine Canyon Landfill refuses paint cans, batteries and used oil.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

Can I take the shed down myself?

Possibly. LADBS lets an owner who owns the building and lot demolish a small wood-frame building, but you still need the permit and the asbestos survey. South Coast AQMD says homeowners file their own demolition notification only when they do the work themselves without hiring anyone.

Can I haul the debris myself?

City rules say mixed C&D debris generated in Los Angeles must go by a permitted hauler to a city-certified processor. A building permit application must name a permitted hauler or show your own Private Solid Waste Hauler Permit for self-hauling. Ask LA Sanitation at (213) 485-1374 before you load a trailer.

Where does each load go?

American Reclamation on Doran Street is a certified mixed C&D processor that takes wood, concrete and metal on public scales. Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar and the South Gate Transfer Station take public loads at about $120 to $123 a ton with a 1-ton minimum. CLARTS does not take C&D.

Who tears it down, and who only hauls?

Prestige, Dirty Deeds, Jedi, Junk Giant and 911 Junk California all describe taking the shed apart and hauling it. LoadUp says light disassembly may be needed and jobs that need heavy machinery or a large demolition crew may be outside its scope.

What happens to the concrete pad?

Ask before you book. Prestige removes concrete foundations, paver pads and gravel bases for an extra charge, and Junk Giant takes basic pavers or concrete bases on request. 911 Junk California's cost guide adds $800 to $3,000 for a slab.

My shed has power. What do I do?

Have it made safe first. Junk Giant says it needs to confirm the power is off before starting. LADBS requires an electrical permit for any electrical work, so have a licensed electrician disconnect the circuit back at the panel.
