PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Atlanta asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Atlanta's building code bars demolishing any structure without a permit, and its exemptions don't cover sheds. The fee isn't published; applications start at $175. Call 404-330-6150.

No. Atlanta's bulk pickup won't take building or construction materials, or anything a contractor leaves. Only small do-it-yourself debris that fits in your trash cart can go out.

Seminole Road Landfill (DeKalb County). Construction and demolition material: $99.80 a ton, with a $14.70 minimum processing fee. Loads up to 250 pounds pay a $16.50 minimum scale fee.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Atlanta's building code makes it unlawful to demolish any building or structure without a building permit unless the code exempts it. Its exemption list covers repairs, not removing a shed. Every building permit application carries a nonrefundable $175 minimum fee; the rest is set by the value of the work, and no flat demolition fee is published. Apply through the Accela Citizen Access portal or at City Hall, 55 Trinity Ave.

The Bureau of Buildings' demolition procedures say a rodent letter on an exterminator's letterhead and a plumbing permit for a sewer plug are required for demolition permits. The City's current checklist for house demolitions says the rodent letter must be dated within 30 days of the permit. Neither document says whether a shed with no plumbing is excused, so ask before you book.

In landmark and historic districts, Atlanta's permit exemptions don't apply to work that affects the outside of a property, and the Express desk can't issue permits there. The Urban Design Commission hears demolitions at a public hearing, while some routine projects get staff review. Call the Historic Preservation Studio at 404-546-0134 first.

Atlanta's demolition checklist sends site plans to the City arborist and asks for orange tree protection fencing at the edge of each nearby tree's root zone, or photos and a signed No Trees Impacted Statement. A shed circuit is part of the electrical system, and the electrical code requires a permit before altering one.

No, not a shed's worth. Atlanta's bulk pickup takes furniture and appliances, up to 8 cubic yards a time and 12 times a year, but the City won't collect building or construction materials, and bulk is refused for items left by contractors. City Code allows construction debris at the curb only from a small owner project that fits in a 96-gallon trash cart, or a personal can of up to 32 gallons and 35 pounds. Schedule bulk online or through ATL311 at (404) 546-0311.

Atlanta has no exclusive hauler for demolition debris, but City Code bars anyone from running a business that collects or hauls solid waste generated by another person at a single-family home without a City permit, unless they're a self-hauler. The code also makes whoever generates construction and demolition waste responsible for hauling it away legally. The City publishes no list of permit holders, so ask any crew whether it holds one.

Atlanta's demolition form asks whether the job removes asbestos. If it does, no permit is issued until you show Georgia EPD's asbestos notification; if not, the owner signs a notarized affidavit. Georgia's asbestos rules list two or more houses, not a single home, so an old cement-board shed on one lot mainly needs the affidavit. EPD's Atlanta office is at 404-363-7026.

Old paint, stain and garden chemicals from the shed shouldn't ride with the debris. Live Thrive's CHaRM Atlanta at 1110 Hill St SE takes latex, oil-based and aerosol paint by appointment. Residents get the first 20 pounds of paint and chemicals free, then pay by the pound.

Under City Code §8-2076.1, demolition permits for residential structures and ancillary buildings go to the Office of Planning, which checks whether the teardown needs rezoning or is meant to create open space. You list your reasons and attach site plans. The form doesn't say how this applies to a lone shed, so ask the Office of Buildings at 404-330-6150 what a shed permit needs.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
