PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Roswell asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, as written. City code requires a permit to demolish a building or structure. The 200 sq ft shed exemption is for building one, not tearing it down. Call (770) 641-3727.
Roswell Code of Ordinances §5.4.1: When permit required ↗City of Roswell: Residential Accessory Structure Plan Review Checklist (PDF) ↗
No. Large item pickup ($38.12 an item) excludes construction and demolition debris, including wood and concrete. Residents can take shed lumber to the City transfer station at $100 a ton.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Fulton County. The other listed companies quote after seeing the shed or photos.
The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Roswell's code says anyone who wants to demolish a building or structure must first apply and get a permit. The City's accessory structure checklist exempts one-story detached accessory structures of 200 square feet or less, but that checklist covers building or installing them, not tearing them down. The demolition application in the City's glossary is written for razing a home and asks for a Georgia EPD project notice and a rodent letter dated within 30 days. Ask Resident and Business Services, (770) 641-3727, which application a shed teardown uses. Applications go through the Permitting & Licensing HUB only.
Roswell Code of Ordinances §5.4.1: When permit required ↗City of Roswell: Residential Accessory Structure Plan Review Checklist (PDF) ↗City of Roswell: Building Applications Work Classes Glossary (PDF) ↗City of Roswell Community Development: Building ↗
The same code section requires a permit to remove or alter any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system covered by the building codes. If your shed has a circuit, a gas line or a water line, plan on a licensed tradesman and a separate trade permit to disconnect it.
The City's permit glossary says work that disturbs more than 500 gross square feet of soil, or is within state waters, may need a separate Land Development Permit. Before digging out piers, posts or a slab, contact Georgia 811.

Roswell won't issue a permit to an owner who is neither a licensed contractor nor the occupant of the home. A homeowner living there can apply; a hired crew needs a licensed contractor on the permit.
No. Roswell's own crews collect household garbage, and a large item pickup costs $38.12 an item, up to five items, on your regular collection day. The City says it doesn't collect construction or demolition debris, including wood, brick, cement, concrete and ceramic tile, because its trucks aren't built for it. Shed contents like a grill or bicycle can go out as large items. Residents can self-haul the lumber to the Roswell Transfer Station.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Roswell runs its own garbage service. City code says the City collects all household garbage, recycling and yard waste and won't permit private companies to collect them unless it can't provide the service, and residents can't opt out. Nothing in the garbage chapter grants anyone a franchise for construction or demolition debris or requires a hauler permit for it. The City's trucks don't take that debris at all.

Since July 1, 2025, the Roswell Transfer Station on Hembree Road takes construction and demolition material from Roswell residents only, at $100 a ton with proof of residence. Its list includes lumber, siding, decks, wood fences, pallets and concrete in pieces under 50 pounds. Metal isn't accepted there, and shingles aren't on the list.
The Roswell Recycling Center takes large metal such as grills, lawn mowers and appliances, plus paint and electronics, from Roswell residents and businesses only. It turns away wood and other construction debris, so only the metal parts of a shed belong there.

Inside Roswell's Historic Overlay District, or on a designated landmark, any work that needs a building permit also needs historic review, and no building permit is issued without a Certificate of Appropriateness. The code lists storage sheds and playhouses among the changes handled by the Zoning Director as a minor certificate.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
