PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Caldwell asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Caldwell's code requires a written permit before removing any structure, and the city has a demolition permit application. Call Building Safety at (208) 455-3024 to confirm for a small shed.

No. Caldwell's code lists scrap lumber among building materials not accepted for collection; the owner or occupant must dispose of them.
Caldwell Code §§ 07-01-07 and 07-01-09, Collection regulations ↗
Pickles Butte Sanitary Landfill (Canyon County). Construction/demolition waste $38 a ton, clean wood $20 a ton, concrete $25 a ton; $15 minimum for Canyon and Owyhee County residents; $50 added for an uncovered load.

Others here: Crap Kings lists $350 to $600 for a small shed up to 10x12. Top Shelf says most shed demolitions run $500 to $2,000. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 in Canyon County.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Caldwell Code § 12-01-15 says the construction, alteration, repair or removal of any structure can't start until the Building Official issues a written permit; the only listed exception is a simple reroof. The demolition application needs a site plan with property lines and street names. The packet lists $50 per application, while the city's archived FY2026 schedule priced demolition by project cost with a $60 minimum; the FY2027 schedule wasn't readable. Starting work before a permit can bring an investigation fee of up to four times the permit fee.

Caldwell's demolition application asks for approved EPA asbestos forms filed 10 days before any building demolition, but it exempts a homeowner demolishing their own fourplex or smaller for no development purpose. Idaho DEQ's page says all demolition projects require the 10-day notification form, sent to EPA Region 10 for non-major facilities.
Caldwell Demolition Permit packet (PDF) ↗Idaho DEQ: Air Quality Compliance Assistance (asbestos) ↗
Idaho's air rules ban burning trade waste from construction, renovation, demolition or repairs, and list treated wood, tar, asphalt materials and paints as prohibited. DEQ says to check with your local fire department before burning anything.
Not with your trash. Caldwell's code says building materials such as masonry, plaster, scrap lumber and wood shavings aren't acceptable for collection and must be disposed of by the contractor, owner or occupant, and its bulky waste category leaves out construction debris. The code also tells the city's contractor, Republic Services, to offer special collection of construction debris, but Republic's Caldwell guide only describes paid pickup of appliances, furniture and other large items (call 208-466-3302).

Caldwell Code § 07-01-09(C) makes it unlawful to engage in the business of collecting, transporting or hauling any refuse over city streets or alleys without a contract as the city's authorized representative; Republic Services holds the residential contract. The same chapter defines construction debris, including demolition waste, separately from refuse and says scrap lumber must be disposed of by the contractor, owner or occupant, so it's unclear whether the hauling ban reaches a removal company carrying away a shed it tore down.

In a designated local historic district such as the Steunenberg Residential Historic District, no structure may be demolished until the Historic Preservation Commission approves a certificate of appropriateness at a public hearing. The certificate is needed whether or not a building permit is, and it must come before any other permit. Ask Planning and Zoning whether your lot is in a district.
Caldwell's nearest landfill is the county's Pickles Butte Sanitary Landfill on Missouri Avenue south of Nampa. It accepts household waste from Canyon and Owyhee County residents only and charges $50 extra for an uncovered load. Its yearly free day takes up to one ton of residential clean-up waste; the 2027 date hasn't been set.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
