SHED REMOVAL IN CHICAGO

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Chicago shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Chicago requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Chicago ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Chicago asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Chicago rules at a glance

Demolition permit

No, for most backyard sheds. Chicago needs no permit to remove a one-story shed of 150 sq ft or less, 15 ft tall or less, without plumbing. Larger sheds and garages need one.

City pickup

No. Streets and Sanitation says remodelers must remove discarded building materials themselves and suggests renting a dumpster. Shed debris needs a hauler or a drop-off site.

Haul it yourself

GreenWay Recycling. Not published. Loads are weighed in and out, and you pay by weight or get a rebate for recyclables.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Cook County. Swift Waste lists truckloads from $275, College HUNKS shows $99 to $699 junk loads, and others quote on site.

Do I need a permit?Chicago demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

The 150-square-foot shed exemption

Chicago's list of work that needs no building permit includes removing a single-story detached structure used as a tool or storage shed, if it is no more than 15 feet tall, has no plumbing and has a footprint of 150 square feet or less. The demolition page confirms that removing a structure that wouldn't need a permit to build needs no demolition permit, though its example is a 100 sq ft shed. A 10x12 (120 sq ft) fits; a 12x14 (168 sq ft) does not. Work done without a permit must still meet the Chicago Construction Codes.

02

Bigger sheds need a licensed general contractor

Since August 2026, demolition permit applications can only be submitted by Chicago-licensed contractors or licensed expediters through the City's online portal, so a homeowner can't file one alone. The applicant pays a nonrefundable $600 deposit, credited to the permit fee, and must get a Demolition Notice of Intent from the Department of Environment, rodent baiting, a right-of-way permit or waiver, and either sewer and water disconnection permits or written confirmation that none are needed.

03

Detached garages follow their own rules

A garage is not a shed under the exemption. The 2027 fee tables, effective January 1, 2027, list a stand-alone permit for wrecking a detached private garage or carport at $130. Ordinary demolition carries a $600 minimum fee. Wood-frame garages replaced through the Express Permit Program are exempt from a separate demolition permit.

04

Wiring needs a licensed electrician

If the shed has power, Chicago requires an electrical contractor license to install, alter or maintain any wiring regulated by the Chicago Electrical Code, whether or not a permit is required. Have a licensed electrician disconnect the circuit before the crew starts.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Chicago pick up shed debris?

No. Streets and Sanitation's guidelines say that if you are remodeling, you are responsible for removing discarded building materials, and that dumpsters can be rented for this. The same page says to arrange any bulk pick-up with your ward superintendent before putting out a large item, while the 44th Ward's site says the City no longer provides bulk pickup and asks residents not to leave large quantities in the alley. Either way, a taken-down shed goes with a hauler, in a rented dumpster or to a drop-off site.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Chicago?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Chicago has its own 811 center

Inside city limits, dig requests go to 811 Chicago (DIGGER), a free one-call service for homeowners as well as contractors. Call 312-744-7000 at least two business days before pulling posts, piers or anchors.

Permitted teardowns must deal with rats first

For any demolition that needs a permit, Chicago requires the applicant to hire a licensed pest control company to bait the site and pass a Streets and Sanitation rodent inspection. Small permit-free sheds skip this step, but old sheds near alleys often shelter rats, so ask your crew how they handle it.

Shed chemicals go to the city drop-off

Old paint, solvents and garden chemicals from the shed don't belong with the debris; several drop-off sites refuse them. The City's Household Chemicals & Computer Recycling Facility at 1150 N. North Branch Street takes them Tuesday 7 a.m. to noon, Thursday 2 to 7 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City warns of possible schedule changes during repairs, so check before you go.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

What will it cost? How shed removal is priced, and what other local companies publish.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

Other companies’ advertised prices

Only LoadUp publishes a shed price for Chicago: $94 to $1,559 for Cook County, set when you book. Swift Waste Solutions lists truckload prices from $275 to $749, and College HUNKS shows $99 to $699 for junk loads; neither is shed-specific. JUNK Relief, Junk Jaws, Junk Robbers and TWO MEN AND A JUNK TRUCK quote each job. None of these prices says it covers a demolition permit, which a shed over 150 sq ft needs.

LoadUp ↗

$94–$1,559

The shed page gives a $94 to $1,559 range. The real price is shown when you book online, and it's lower for a shed that's already taken apart. Its national shed page says removal typically starts around $1,555; its local pages say an already-disassembled shed costs less.

These are the other companies’ own advertised prices, checked October 8, 2026. They are not our prices and not a citywide average.

When you compare quotes, ask for one written total that covers dismantling, hauling, disposal fees and cleanup, and ask whether the contents, the floor and the slab or footings are included. What shed removal costs ↗

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

GreenWay Recycling at 2100 S. Kilbourn Ave. takes wood, shingles, concrete and metal from homeowners and charges or pays by weight. Tri-State Disposal in Riverdale takes construction debris and adds a $10 environmental fee per load. SWANCC's Glenview Transfer Station in Des Plaines charges $100 a ton for waste and $75 a ton for residential asphalt shingles.

Who takes the concrete slab?

JUNK Relief says it can't break up a slab with its equipment, but will haul broken concrete for a weight surcharge or leave the slab in place. Junk Jaws removes wooden floors and skids and says to ask about concrete pads. GreenWay and Tri-State both accept concrete you bring in.

Do I need to be home for the removal?

Not always. JUNK Relief says you don't need to be home for a shed job: leave the gate open, tell them what stays, and the crew texts photos when it's done. Ask other companies before booking.

Will a junk company take the shed down or just haul it?

It depends. JUNK Relief, Junk Jaws, Swift Waste Solutions and Junk Robbers say they dismantle sheds. LoadUp says some light disassembly may be needed and asks for photos first. College HUNKS and TWO MEN AND A JUNK TRUCK list sheds among items they take, without describing teardown, so ask.

What if the shed has old cement-board siding?

Be careful with it. GreenWay won't accept asbestos-containing materials. For permitted demolitions, Chicago's Notice of Intent asks how asbestos and other hazardous materials will be handled. Ask your crew how they deal with suspect siding or roofing before work starts.
