PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Joliet asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Joliet code requires a demolition permit before tearing down any building or structure, with no size exemption. Call Building Inspections at 815-724-4070.

Only a little at a time. WM takes up to five 35-gallon cans or three 50-pound bundles of project debris a week, and refuses large amounts of demolition material and concrete.

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.
Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Will County. The other three companies quote after seeing the job or price by truck load.
The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Section 8-122 says no one may demolish any building or structure, or any structural part of one, without a demolition permit from the chief of inspections, obtained by the person doing the work. Joliet adopted the 2015 residential code but replaced its permit chapter with the City's own rules, and Section 8-34 makes it unlawful to demolish a structure without a permit. The City's shed page lists no small-shed exemption.

The application needs a certificate of insurance and a $50,000 wrecking bond. The building inspector may waive the bond for an owner tearing down a structure on their own property if the demolition costs under $1,000. You must give the chief of inspections written notice at least 24 hours before work starts, and notify the owners of adjoining lots before the permit is issued.
Before a permit is issued, every utility with a service connection in the structure must give a release saying its connection has been removed, sealed and plugged. If your shed has electric or water, start this early. After demolition, the lot must be left safe and regraded.
The owner applies when doing their own work; otherwise a registered contractor must pull it. The City's fee page lists no separate demolition fee. Building permits cost $10 per $1,000 of job value, with a $65 minimum.

Only in small amounts. Joliet's trash hauler, Waste Management, collects incidental home improvement debris if it is in the garbage cart, a 35-gallon can or tied bundles of 50 pounds or less, up to five cans or three bundles a week. Large quantities of construction and demolition material, fencing, and dirt, stone, concrete or rock are on its list of items not collected. For a whole shed, WM rents 10- to 30-yard containers; call 815-280-7854 for a quote.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

That's a separate shed permit, $65 on the City's fee page. Joliet treats sheds over 120 sq ft like garages, which means a concrete slab, and caps sheds at one story or 15 feet. Keeping a sound slab can save you a pour.
