SHED REMOVAL IN ANKENY

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Ankeny shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Ankeny requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Ankeny asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Ankeny rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Ankeny lists moving or demolishing a structure among work that needs a permit, and the demolition fee is a flat $25. Questions: Development Services, 515-963-3550.

City pickup

No city pickup. Ankeny homes hire their own private trash hauler, so ask yours whether it takes lumber or bulky debris and what it charges.

Haul it yourself

Metro Park East Landfill (Metro Waste Authority). Construction and demolition debris $44 a ton ($22 minimum) for vehicles over 6,000 lbs. Vehicles under 6,000 lbs pay a flat $12 (car, under 200 lbs), $17 (van or SUV) or $22 (large SUV, truck or trailer). Commingled C&D recycling $40 a ton. Mixed loads pay the highest rate.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Polk County. Richie Bros quotes teardowns one by one, with junk loads from $150; the others give free quotes.

Do I need a permit?Ankeny demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A teardown needs a $25 demolition permit

The City's permit handout lists moving or demolishing a structure among the jobs that need a permit, and says no work may start until the permit is issued. The 2026 fee schedule lists demolition at a $25 flat fee. Apply through the Ankeny One Stop online portal or at Development Services, 1210 NW Prairie Ridge Drive; a 3% service fee applies to card payments.

03

Call 811 before pulling posts or footings

Digging out piers, posts or a slab edge counts as excavation. Iowa One Call sets a default 48-hour start time after you submit a locate request, so call 811 at least two days before digging.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Ankeny pick up shed debris?

Not through the City. Ankeny has no city garbage service; each household contracts with a private hauler. City code says bulky rubbish too large for normal collection is picked up on request under each hauler's own procedures, and the City tells residents to ask their hauler about large items and fees. Metro Waste Authority's Curb It! recycling doesn't take metal objects. Call your hauler before setting out any lumber or roofing.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Metro Park East Landfill (Metro Waste Authority)

12181 NE University Ave., Mitchellville, IA 50169

Metro Waste Authority's main landfill takes construction and demolition debris. Sorted loads of clean untreated lumber, scrap metal, or concrete and other rubble are recycled at no charge; plywood, particle board, shingles and treated or painted wood count as regular construction debris.

Fees: Construction and demolition debris $44 a ton ($22 minimum) for vehicles over 6,000 lbs. Vehicles under 6,000 lbs pay a flat $12 (car, under 200 lbs), $17 (van or SUV) or $22 (large SUV, truck or trailer). Commingled C&D recycling $40 a ton. Mixed loads pay the highest rate.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (April to October) or 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (November to March). Cover or tie down the load or pay a $35 fee; staff don't help unload. Call 515-967-2076.

Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off (Metro Waste Authority)

1105 Prairie Drive SW, Bondurant, IA 50035

Takes household hazardous waste such as oil-based and latex paint, stains and varnishes, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides and gasoline often found in an old shed. It does not take building debris.

Fees: Most items are free up to 75 lbs., then $1 a pound. Latex paint is $1 per gallon can.

Before you go: Open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Call 515-967-5512.

What else should I know in Ankeny?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Anyone hauling trash for pay needs a $200 city license

Ankeny has no franchised hauler. City code says trash collection is by private contract with collectors licensed by the City, and no one may run a business collecting or hauling solid waste they didn't produce without an annual collector's license. The application goes to the City Clerk with a list of trucks, routes and the disposal site, plus proof of liability insurance, and the fee is $200 a year. The code doesn't say whether a crew that tears down a shed and hauls its own debris counts. Owners may haul their own waste to an approved disposal site.

You pick your own trash hauler

Ankeny doesn't run garbage pickup. Each household signs up with one of five private haulers the City lists, including Ankeny Sanitation, Aspen Waste Systems, Garbage Guys, Waste Connections and Waste Management. The City says to ask your hauler about large items and extra trash. Recycling is Metro Waste Authority's Curb It! cart, which doesn't take metal objects.

Old shingles may need asbestos packaging at the landfill

Iowa's asbestos notice rule covers 'facilities', which the state form says excludes single-family homes and small apartment buildings, so a backyard shed usually needs no state notice. Metro Waste Authority is stricter at the gate: suspect asbestos material, even from homes, must be double-bagged and labeled or tested first, and asbestos loads cost $52.50 a ton and must be called in ahead. It says homes built after July 1989 are less likely to have it.

Every new shed needs a building permit

Ankeny's residential code deletes the usual exemption for small detached buildings, so a replacement shed of any size needs a permit. The City's shed handout caps sheds at 12 feet tall, requires them to sit behind the house at least 3 feet from lot lines, and says sheds over 200 square feet must be anchored to a concrete slab or foundation.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Ankeny?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Of other companies serving Ankeny, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Polk County, lower if it's already taken apart. Richie Bros Junk Removal quotes shed teardowns individually; its general junk loads start at $150 and trailer loads run $300 to $825 with up to 1 ton of disposal.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Metro Park East Landfill in Mitchellville takes construction and demolition debris. A pickup, trailer or large SUV under 6,000 lbs. pays a $22 flat rate; heavier vehicles pay $44 a ton. Clean untreated lumber, metal and broken concrete are free in separate loads, but painted wood, shingles and plywood are charged as C&D.

Where does a metal shed go?

Metro Park East Landfill takes ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal at no charge if the load holds only metal. Mixed loads pay the higher rate, so keep the panels and framing separate from wood and trash.

Can the concrete pad come out too?

Ask when you get a price. Metro Waste Authority recycles broken concrete and rubble for free, but it limits piece size and doesn't accept whole slabs. Richie Bros says heavy debris like concrete can push a load past its 1-ton limit and add cost.

What about old paint and chemicals in the shed?

Take them to the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant, open Tuesday to Saturday. Most household chemicals are free up to 75 pounds; latex paint is $1 a gallon can.

Do I need a permit for a new shed?

Yes. Ankeny removed the code exemption for small detached buildings, and its shed handout lists footing or slab and final inspections and a certificate of occupancy. A shed's floating slab is limited to 1,010 square feet and one story.
