SHED REMOVAL IN COUNCIL BLUFFS

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Council Bluffs shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Council Bluffs requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Council Bluffs asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Council Bluffs rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. City code requires a demolition permit for any building or structure. The fee is $50 per accessory structure. Apply through the Building Division's Customer Portal or call (712) 890-5276.

City pickup

No. Curbside bulky pickup excludes construction and demolition debris, and the garbage cart can't hold construction material or concrete. The city's Recycling Center takes it by weight.

Haul it yourself

Council Bluffs Recycling Center. $75 per ton for regular construction debris, $40 per ton for clean concrete or unpainted, untreated lumber, prorated, with a $10 minimum per load. Payment is due at drop-off.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Pottawattamie County. Fuzed Enterprises quotes from photos. Dumping it yourself at the Recycling Center costs $75 a ton for mixed debris.

Do I need a permit?Council Bluffs demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

What the demolition permit asks

Code chapter 13.05 applies to every building or structure. The permit is good for six months, and the job must be finished and the ground leveled within 10 calendar days of starting unless the building official extends it. The structure must be fenced whenever it is left unattended, and utilities must be ended at the property line and inspected.

03

Wiring and digging

The Building Division issues electrical and excavation permits and inspects utility work. Iowa One Call (811) has a default 48-hour start time before digging, which applies when you pull posts or break out footings.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Council Bluffs Recycling Center

4441 Gifford Rd, Council Bluffs, IA 51501

City-run drop-off that takes construction debris: concrete, drywall, insulation, metal, shingles and metal roofing, and treated or untreated wood. It also takes scrap metal and household hazardous waste. It is not a landfill and refuses asbestos materials, dirt and fire-damaged materials.

Fees: $75 per ton for regular construction debris, $40 per ton for clean concrete or unpainted, untreated lumber, prorated, with a $10 minimum per load. Payment is due at drop-off.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. City code lets it limit use to city residents, so bring proof of address. Call (712) 890-5454.

River City Transfer (WM)

What else should I know in Council Bluffs?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Hauling debris for pay needs a city permit, and demolition needs a license

Council Bluffs has no exclusive hauler for demolition debris, but its code says only the city's contractor, permitted commercial haulers and owners cleaning up their own place (with unpaid help) may remove solid waste, which includes construction debris. A paid crew needs a commercial collection permit: vehicle inspection, $1 million liability insurance, and $40 per pickup or $75 per larger truck each year. The code also bars any contractor from demolishing a structure unless licensed with the city clerk as a demolition, general, building or residential contractor.

The city runs its own debris drop-off

The Council Bluffs Recycling Center at 4441 Gifford Rd takes construction debris by weight: wood (treated or untreated), shingles, metal roofing, insulation and concrete. It charges $75 a ton for mixed debris and $40 a ton for clean concrete or unpainted, untreated lumber, with a $10 minimum. It is not a landfill and refuses asbestos and dirt.

Historic districts need an alteration permit

On a landmark or in a historic district, city code requires an alteration permit from the Building Division before any removal or demolition that clearly changes the outside look and is visible from outside. A certificate of appropriateness comes from the preservation commission.

Asbestos notices skip single homes

Iowa's asbestos notice rule covers 'facilities', which the state's form says excludes single-family homes and apartment buildings with four or fewer units. When a notice is required, it must be postmarked 10 working days ahead. The city's Recycling Center won't take asbestos materials, including asbestos roofing.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What does shed removal cost in Council Bluffs?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies serving Council Bluffs, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Pottawattamie County, lower if it's already taken apart. Fuzed Enterprises quotes from photos. How much does it cost to drop shed debris myself?

At the city Recycling Center it's $75 a ton for regular construction debris, which works out to $10 for every 260 pounds, with a $10 minimum per load. Clean concrete and unpainted, untreated lumber are $40 a ton. It's open weekdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Can I use an Omaha landfill or transfer station instead?

Possibly. WM's River City Transfer in Omaha lists construction and demolition debris as accepted, but it posts no prices and says nothing about loads from Iowa, so call 402-889-8721 first. City code says haulers of waste produced in Council Bluffs must use a disposal site approved by the city.

What about the concrete pad?

Broken concrete goes to the Recycling Center at $40 a ton if it's clean, without much dirt or exposed rebar. City code also lets clean rubble such as concrete and block be used as fill on a site in the city with a proper permit.

Where does a metal shed go?

The Recycling Center lists scrap metal and metal roofing among what it accepts. Across the river, Scrap Central in Omaha buys steel and aluminum from the public; call 402-393-6620 for prices.
