SHED REMOVAL IN URBANDALE

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Urbandale shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Urbandale requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Urbandale asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Urbandale rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. City code says no building or structure may be demolished without a permit from Community Development. The fee is $50. Questions: Building Services, 515-278-3935.

City pickup

Partly. Garbage carts can't hold construction debris, but the City's paid bulk pickup takes lumber by appointment; a pickup load is billed as a large item, $30 for the first.

Haul it yourself

Metro Park East Landfill (Metro Waste Authority). Construction and demolition debris $44 a ton ($22 minimum) for vehicles over 6,000 lbs. Vehicles under 6,000 lbs pay a flat $12 (car, under 200 lbs), $17 (van or SUV) or $22 (large SUV, truck or trailer). Commingled C&D recycling $40 a ton. Mixed loads pay the highest rate.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Polk County. Richie Bros quotes teardowns one by one, with junk loads from $150; the others give free quotes.

Do I need a permit?Urbandale demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A teardown needs a $50 demolition permit

Code §150.15 requires a permit from the Department of Community Development before any building or structure is demolished. The application lists the property, the demolition method and the firm doing the work. The 2026 fee schedule sets the permit at $50, the demolition bond at $0.00, and a $50 penalty fee for starting without a permit. Apply through the City's online permit portal.

03

Keep debris off the street

Code §150.19 says demolition debris hauled on public streets must not spill, and the permit holder must clean up any that does. If not, the City may do the cleanup and bill the permit holder or property owner.

04

Call 811 before pulling posts or footings

Digging out piers, posts or a slab edge counts as excavation. Iowa One Call sets a default 48-hour start time after a locate request, so call 811 at least two days ahead.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Urbandale pick up shed debris?

Some of it, for a fee. Construction debris isn't allowed in the City's garbage cart. The City's bulk item collection, on the 2nd and 4th Fridays, lists lumber by the pickup load as a large item and a half cubic yard as a small item. Large items are $30 for the first and $10 for each one after; small items are $15 for the first. Schedule at least a day ahead with Engineering and Public Works (515-278-3950) and pay when you book.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Metro Park East Landfill (Metro Waste Authority)

12181 NE University Ave., Mitchellville, IA 50169

Metro Waste Authority's main landfill takes construction and demolition debris. Sorted loads of clean untreated lumber, scrap metal, or concrete and other rubble are recycled at no charge; plywood, particle board, shingles and treated or painted wood count as regular construction debris.

Fees: Construction and demolition debris $44 a ton ($22 minimum) for vehicles over 6,000 lbs. Vehicles under 6,000 lbs pay a flat $12 (car, under 200 lbs), $17 (van or SUV) or $22 (large SUV, truck or trailer). Commingled C&D recycling $40 a ton. Mixed loads pay the highest rate.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (April to October) or 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (November to March). Cover or tie down the load or pay a $35 fee; staff don't help unload. Call 515-967-2076.

Metro Park West Landfill (Metro Waste Authority)

20 335th St., Perry, IA 50220

Metro Waste Authority landfill that lists construction and demolition debris, bulky waste and scrap appliances among its rates.

Fees: Construction and demolition debris $64 a ton ($22 minimum) for vehicles over 6,000 lbs. A pickup, van or SUV pays $60 a ton ($22 minimum); a car load under 200 lbs is $12. Mixed loads pay the highest rate.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month 9 a.m. to noon. Call 515-333-5618.

Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off (Metro Waste Authority)

1105 Prairie Drive SW, Bondurant, IA 50035

Takes household hazardous waste such as oil-based and latex paint, stains and varnishes, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides and gasoline often found in an old shed. It does not take building debris.

Fees: Most items are free up to 75 lbs., then $1 a pound. Latex paint is $1 per gallon can.

Before you go: Open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Call 515-967-5512.

What else should I know in Urbandale?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Hauling trash for pay needs a city permit, and it must go to a Metro site

Urbandale has no franchised hauler for demolition debris. The City collects garbage from homes only, and code §57.32 says anyone in the business of collecting or hauling solid waste they didn't produce needs an annual private collector's permit, approved by the Council. The fee schedule sets it at $20 plus $10 per vehicle, with $500,000 liability coverage. Code §57.12 says all solid waste from the city must go to a disposal site in Metro Waste Authority's plan. Owners may haul their own waste.

City cleanups skip building materials

Urbandale's spring curbside cleanup (the week of April 13 in 2026) takes almost anything except appliances and construction debris or building materials. The free bulk-item drop-off at 9401 Hickman Road on the second Saturday of each month also turns away construction debris, bricks and concrete. Shed lumber goes through the paid bulk pickup instead.

Old shingles may need asbestos packaging at the landfill

The state asbestos notice applies to 'facilities', which Iowa's form says excludes single-family homes and apartment buildings of four units or fewer, so a home shed usually needs no notice. Metro Waste Authority still requires suspect asbestos from homes to be double-bagged and labeled, or tested, before it is buried. Asbestos loads cost $52.50 a ton and must be called in to the scale house first.

Two City pages differ on permits for small new sheds

Urbandale's code exempts one-story tool and storage sheds of up to 120 square feet without a permanent foundation from a building permit. The City's residential permit page says a permit is needed for any shed, and its general permit page says portable sheds still need zoning approval. Ask Building Services before you build a replacement.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Urbandale?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Of other companies serving Urbandale, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Polk County, lower if it's already taken apart. Richie Bros Junk Removal quotes shed teardowns individually; its general junk loads start at $150 and trailer loads run $300 to $825 with up to 1 ton of disposal.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Metro Park East Landfill in Mitchellville takes construction and demolition debris; a pickup, trailer or large SUV under 6,000 lbs. pays a $22 flat rate. Metro Park West Landfill in Perry charges $64 a ton for C&D. Clean untreated lumber, metal and broken concrete are free at Metro Park East in separate loads.

Where does a metal shed go?

Metro Park East Landfill recycles scrap steel and aluminum for free when the load holds only metal. Keep panels and framing apart from wood, or the whole load is charged the higher rate.

Can the concrete pad come out too?

Ask when you get a price. The City's bulk drop-off won't take concrete. Metro Waste Authority recycles broken concrete for free but limits piece size and won't take whole slabs. Richie Bros says heavy debris like concrete can push a load over its 1-ton limit.

What about old paint and chemicals in the shed?

Metro Waste Authority holds hazardous waste drop-offs at its Grimes transfer station on second Saturdays, March to November, 8 a.m. to noon. Its Bondurant drop-off is open Tuesday to Saturday. Most household chemicals are free up to 75 pounds; latex paint is $1 a gallon.

Does the City charge to haul away a few boards?

Yes, through bulk pickup. Less than half a cubic yard of lumber is billed as a small item, $15 for the first. Bulk pickup doesn't cover tree logs and limbs, which have a separate collection.
