The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Olathe adopted the 2018 International Building Code with local amendments. Its amended section 105.1 requires anyone who intends to demolish a building or structure to get a permit first, and the City's demolition page lists accessory structure demolition as one of its permit types. The amended 105.2 says one-story tool and storage sheds of 200 square feet or less need no permit, but it doesn't say whether that covers demolition. Apply through the City's online permit portal.

Demolishing a historic landmark, a structure in a residential historic district, or a national or state registered property needs a Certificate of Appropriateness first, whether or not a building permit is required. The request goes to the Historic Preservation Board and then the Planning Commission.

Yes, for a fee, as long as it isn't masonry. The City's bulk pickup takes household items, construction debris or brush on your trash day at $30 per 15 minutes of loading time, with a $30 minimum; the rate rises after the fourth and eighth pickups in a year. Schedule it in your online utility account or at 913-971-9311. Set items within 8 feet of the curb by 7 a.m., but not before 5 p.m. the day before. The City won't take rock, dirt, concrete, bricks, asphalt or hazardous waste. For a bigger teardown, the City rents roll-off containers that take construction debris.

Olathe's code says the City collects residential solid waste and recyclables for the entire city, and it runs its own bulk pickup, dumpsters and transfer station. The City code doesn't mention private haulers at all, so no published City rule bars a removal company from hauling away shed debris. Johnson County's solid waste code separately requires a county hauler license for businesses that haul residential solid waste, with an exemption for debris hauled as an incidental part of work like roofing or remodeling.

The Olathe Transfer Station gives residents with ID a $45 minimum per load, but its rules say residential loads cannot be brought in a commercial vehicle or by a hired hauler, and residents bringing business material pay the commercial rate. If a company hauls your shed, its load is a commercial load.
If posts, piers or a slab will come out with digging equipment, Olathe asks for two locate requests: Kansas One-Call (811) for the utilities, and a separate City of Olathe water and sewer locate. Request at least 2 full working days ahead and no more than 20 calendar days before you dig. The City doesn't locate the private water line from the meter to the house, the sewer service line or irrigation.
Olathe's development code limits a shed by lot size: 210 square feet on lots under 7,000 square feet, 3 percent of lot area up to 13,000 square feet, and 400 square feet on larger lots. A shed must sit at least 10 feet from the house and 5 feet from rear and side lot lines. Know these before you replace the old one.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Partly. Olathe rents 4-yard and 6-yard call-and-haul dumpsters to residential customers for $70 and $85, emptied once, but they don't take construction debris like bricks, concrete, rocks or gravel. The City points construction debris to its 20-, 30- and 40-yard roll-off rentals, which need an account application.
No. The Olathe Community Recycling Center at 1100 Hedge Lane takes yard waste, food waste and household recycling from residents, but it turns away lumber, including landscape timbers, decking and pallets, and metal.
The City's household hazardous waste facility at 1420 S. Robinson Drive takes them free from Johnson County residents, by appointment Wednesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus monthly no-appointment drop-off days. KDHE says Kansas and federal asbestos rules are aimed at commercial and public buildings, and a homeowner working on their own home isn't covered. Any asbestos abatement must be done by a licensed company. If the shed has old cement-board siding or roofing, ask KDHE at 785-296-6024 before it comes down.
