PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Overland Park asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, as written. The City requires a permit before any existing structure is demolished. Its 200 sq ft shed exemption isn't said to cover teardowns; ask Permit Services, 913-895-6220.

No city service. Private haulers must offer at least one bulky pickup a year and set their own item rules. The City runs construction debris drop-off days each spring and fall.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The City's permit page says a building permit is required for any new residential building, addition, alteration or demolition, and that a permit is required before demolition of an existing structure can begin. Overland Park adopted the 2024 International Building Code with its own amendments. Its amended section 105.2 says permits aren't required for one-story detached tool and storage sheds of 200 square feet or less, but it lists building and moving such sheds, not demolishing them. Ask Permit Services before tearing down a small shed.

The City wants confirmation from the utility companies that service connections are disconnected before it issues a demolition permit. A 6-foot fence is normally required, but the building official may waive it for small structures that come down in a short time; work lasting more than one working day generally needs one. A final inspection follows the teardown, and the site must be left free of debris, graded and seeded. Request inspections at (913) 895-6220.

Overland Park only issues building permits to contractors with an active Johnson County contractor's license of the right type, and only to permittees listed in the County's system. Homeowners doing their own work don't need a license, but any subcontractor they hire does. Johnson County Contractor Licensing is at 913-715-2233.
Overland Park does not locate utilities. It requires residents and contractors to contact Kansas One-Call before any project that could affect underground lines, which includes pulling anchors, piers or a slab.
Not as a City service. Overland Park has no city trash collection; residents and HOAs hire one of the City-permitted private haulers. Since 2022 each hauler must offer at least one bulky item pickup a year, and you work out the date and accepted items with your hauler. The City's own option for shed lumber, roofing and concrete is its construction debris drop-off event, held in spring and fall. Scrap metal can go to the City Recycling Center year-round.

Overland Park has no franchise for construction debris. The City permits trash haulers, but its code says hauler and hauler vehicle permits are not required to collect or dispose of bulky waste or construction and demolition waste, as long as the load can't spill on the street. Johnson County is a separate question: its solid waste code requires a county hauler license for a business that collects and hauls residential solid waste, with an exemption for debris hauled as an incidental part of work like roofing or remodeling. Whether a shed teardown crew falls under that exemption isn't stated.

Twice a year, in spring and fall, the City takes residents' old decking, fencing, lumber, roofing, concrete, metal, windows and doors at a one-day drop-off event. Residency is checked, each household gets one visit of up to a truck and medium trailer, and commercial waste is turned away. The fall 2026 event was October 10 at Shawnee Mission West High School, so the next one is in spring. Questions go to Gayle Bergman, 913-895-6164.
If you'd rather move a shed than tear it down, the City's building code exempts moving buildings of 200 square feet or less. Moving a building of 200 square feet or more across a street or alley carries a $500 moving permit fee.

The City's accessory structure guide says any electrical wiring or gas piping to an accessory structure needs a permit no matter how small the building is. Overland Park doesn't mark utility lines itself and requires a Kansas One-Call locate before work that could hit buried lines.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

KDHE says Kansas and federal asbestos rules focus on commercial and public buildings, and that homeowners working on their own residence aren't covered. Asbestos abatement itself must be done by a licensed company. Old cement-board siding or roofing is the usual suspect on a shed; call KDHE's asbestos program at 785-296-6024 with questions.
It can. The City notes that neighborhoods with homes associations or neighborhood groups may have their own bylaws, restrictions or requirements for construction, so check before the shed comes down or a new one goes up.
