SHED REMOVAL IN MINNEAPOLIS

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Minneapolis shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Minneapolis requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Minneapolis asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Minneapolis rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Not spelled out. Minneapolis lists wrecking permits for commercial buildings and one- and two-family homes, but its form has an accessory-structure box. Ask Development Review, 612-673-3000, before a large shed comes down.

City pickup

No. City crews don't pick up building materials, and a broken-down item may be tagged as building materials. City customers can take shed debris to the South Transfer Station with a voucher.

Haul it yourself

South Transfer Station (City of Minneapolis). City garbage customers get up to six cleanup vouchers a year, each for one load of up to 2,000 pounds of garbage and construction debris; over the limit it is $41 a ton. Water-only customers use a pay-per-use pass: $122.05 a ton for loads of only construction and demolition debris, $117.86 a ton for mixed loads, $40 minimum, $15 administrative fee. Fees go on the utility bill; no cash, checks or cards.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Hennepin County. Junk Genius prices by volume from $125, College HUNKS shows $99 to $699 junk loads, and others quote on site.

Do I need a permit?Minneapolis demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

What Minneapolis says about wrecking permits

The City's wrecking permit page says a permit is required to demolish a commercial building or a one- or two-family dwelling, and doesn't mention sheds. The permit application, though, lists "Accessory of Utility Structure" as a building type, with a $84.20 minimum fee. Before a permit is issued, the form asks for sign-offs from utilities, sewer and water, pest abatement and Preservation and Design. The City's list of permit-free work includes building a one-story tool or storage shed under 200 square feet, but that list is about construction, not tearing one down.

02

No wrecker license is needed for a shed

Minneapolis licenses building wreckers, but its license application says a license is not required to tear down a private garage or shed, or other buildings no larger than 1,000 square feet. That is a licensing rule only; it doesn't say whether a permit is needed.

03

Hazardous materials come out first

Minnesota requires hazardous and problem wastes, including asbestos, to be removed from any structure before it is demolished, and the MPCA says this applies to all structures, residential included. The separate ten-day notice to the MPCA applies to buildings under the federal asbestos rule, which in general excludes residences with four or fewer units. Lead paint may stay on the structure.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Minneapolis pick up shed debris?

No. Solid Waste & Recycling lists building materials (construction and demolition debris) among items it will not pick up. Crews take up to two large items a week, but the City says not to break furniture down because crews may tag the pieces as building materials. Special cleanups cost at least $100, billed at $181 an hour, but the page doesn't say they take building debris. The usual routes are a hauler, a rented dumpster, or the South Transfer Station with a City voucher.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

South Transfer Station (City of Minneapolis)

2850 20th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55407

City drop-off for properties with City of Minneapolis garbage or water service only. It takes building materials, shingles, scrap metal, household garbage and furniture. It does not take asbestos, dirt and sod, paint, hazardous materials or yard waste. Staff do not help unload and may refuse a load.

Fees: City garbage customers get up to six cleanup vouchers a year, each for one load of up to 2,000 pounds of garbage and construction debris; over the limit it is $41 a ton. Water-only customers use a pay-per-use pass: $122.05 a ton for loads of only construction and demolition debris, $117.86 a ton for mixed loads, $40 minimum, $15 administrative fee. Fees go on the utility bill; no cash, checks or cards.

Before you go: Call 612-673-2917 (weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) for a voucher or pass before you go. Open Tuesday to Friday 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bring a state-issued ID. No commercial vehicles; 25 feet long by 11 feet high at most, trailer included.

SKB Malcolm Avenue Transfer Station

630 Malcolm Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414

Before you go: Call (612) 331-4610. Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to noon.

What else should I know in Minneapolis?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only City-licensed haulers may carry building debris for hire

Minneapolis has no single franchised hauler for construction debris, but it licenses anyone who collects building materials for disposal. The Garbage/Solid Waste Hauler license (Chapter 225) covers garbage, recycling, yard waste and building materials, and the City posts a list of licensed contractors who haul construction and demolition debris. Hennepin County's regional hauling license is not needed for loads of only construction or demolition debris. The City's pages don't say whether a crew hauling debris from its own teardown needs the license. Questions: Business Licenses, 612-673-2080.

City garbage customers get six drop-off loads a year

If you have City garbage service, you get up to six cleanup vouchers a year for the South Transfer Station. Each covers one trip in one vehicle with up to 2,000 pounds of garbage and construction debris from the property on the voucher. You must call ahead for a voucher; you can't get one at the gate. You can authorize a contractor or hauler who works for you to use it.

Shed chemicals and scrap metal go to the county

Old paint, stain, solvents and garden chemicals don't belong in a debris load; the South Transfer Station refuses paint and hazardous materials. Hennepin County's drop-off sites in Bloomington and Brooklyn Park take them from county households, Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They also take scrap metal free, cut to 4 feet or less with non-metal parts removed.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Minneapolis?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp's shed page shows $94 to $1,559 for Hennepin County, lower if the shed is already apart. Junk Genius prices by truck volume from $125, with dismantling and dump fees included. Junk Masters and Johnson Junk Removal quote after seeing the shed.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

City utility customers can use the South Transfer Station at 2850 20th Ave. S. A loads-only-construction-debris pass costs $122.05 a ton for water-only customers, while City garbage customers use free vouchers up to 2,000 pounds a load. SKB's Malcolm Avenue transfer station in Southeast Minneapolis lists construction and demolition debris but publishes no rates; call (612) 331-4610.

What about a metal shed?

Hennepin County's Bloomington and Brooklyn Park drop-offs take scrap metal at no charge if it's cut to 4 feet or less and non-metal parts are removed. Junk Masters says metal sheds come apart faster and the panels go to a scrap recycler.

Who takes the concrete slab?

Hennepin County's drop-offs don't take concrete. The county's guide says to bring concrete, pavers and rock to a business that recycles them into road base, such as SKB Environmental in Minneapolis, and to call first. None of the shed companies listed here says it breaks up slabs, so ask before booking.

What if the shed has old asbestos siding or roofing?

Don't put it in a debris load. The South Transfer Station and Hennepin County's drop-offs refuse asbestos, and the county points to the Minnesota Department of Health for testing and licensed contractors. SKB's Malcolm Avenue station takes residential asbestos at $100 per sealed, labeled 55-gallon double 6-mil bag. Ordinary asphalt shingles go to the South Transfer Station with a voucher.

Will a junk company take the shed down or just haul it?

It depends. Junk Masters, Junk Genius and Johnson Junk Removal say they dismantle the shed and haul it. LoadUp says light disassembly may be needed. Junk King Minneapolis and College HUNKS list sheds among items they take, without describing teardown, so ask.
