SHED REMOVAL IN KANSAS CITY

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Kansas City shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Kansas City requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Kansas City ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Kansas City asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Kansas City rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes, at 200 sq ft and up. Kansas City exempts one-story detached sheds under 200 sq ft from a demolition permit. Larger ones need one: $90 per accessory building.

City pickup

No. City code bars building materials and construction debris from bulky pickup. Small lumber bundles can go in weekly trash, but a whole shed needs a hauler or a drop-off.

Haul it yourself

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Jackson County. College HUNKS shows $99 to $699 junk loads, and the other companies quote each job.

Do I need a permit?Kansas City demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Sheds 200 square feet and larger

The City's demolition guide says a permit from City Planning & Development is needed to demolish any building or structure except one-story detached accessory buildings under 200 square feet. Code §18-16 exempts the same sheds from a building permit when the roof area doesn't exceed 200 square feet, so a shed of exactly 200 is a gray area; ask. The demolition permit fee for a detached accessory building is $90 under §18-20. The application asks for proof that utilities are disconnected, proof of rat abatement, and the dump site you'll use.

03

Asbestos

Kansas City's guide says anyone demolishing a structure must use Missouri-registered asbestos contractors and file a notice with the City's Air Quality Program 10 working days ahead. Single-family homes and buildings with four or fewer units are exempt from that notice when nothing else is being demolished in the same project. Old cement-board siding or roofing is worth asking about. Air Quality Program: 816-513-6314.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Kansas City pick up shed debris?

No. City code says building materials and construction debris may never be set out or collected as bulky items, and the bulky page lists loose building materials and lumber as not accepted. Lumber can go in regular weekly trash only in bundles up to 4 ft x 2 ft and under 40 lbs, counting toward your weekly limit. For more than 500 lbs of construction debris, the City says to call a private waste company.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Kansas City?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

No City hauler permit for demolition debris

Kansas City requires a yearly Public Works permit, $20 per truck, for anyone in the business of collecting refuse (§62-5). But §62-10 says those rules do not apply to hauling debris from the construction, repair or demolition of improvements on real property, as long as it rides in a tight vehicle that won't spill on the street. No franchise or exclusive hauler for construction debris was found. The City's demolition guide also lists Public Works hauling permits (816-513-2679); what those cover was not confirmed.

Shed teardowns for hire need a City demolition license

Under §18-14, anyone who contracts to demolish a building for someone else must hold a Kansas City demolition contractor license, or work for a licensed contractor under its supervisor. Class II covers buildings up to three stories. Property owners may take down their own one-story building if it sits at least 10 feet from every property line, doing the work themselves or with immediate family. The code doesn't carve out small sheds. Contractor Licensing: 816-513-1500.

Historic demolition review skips sheds

Since a December 2024 ordinance, the Historic Preservation Office reviews proposed demolitions of buildings over 50 years old, and the commission can impose a 45-day delay on an eligible one. The City's page doesn't mention sheds, but a Kansas City Star report says the law leaves out outbuildings such as sheds. Landmark properties on the Kansas City Register still need a Certificate of Appropriateness to demolish.

Leaf and brush sites take yard waste only

Kansas City's three drop-off sites, at 11660 N. Main Street, 10301 Raytown Road and 7700 E US-40 Highway, accept only leaves, yard waste, grass clippings, brush and logs. They're free for city residents on Saturdays with ID. Shed lumber, roofing and siding don't belong there.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Kansas City?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp's Kansas City shed page shows $94 to $1,559 for Jackson County. ClearPath gives a flat-rate quote based on the structure, volume, access and materials. Junk Zone says its quote covers labor and disposal. Add $90 if the shed needs a City demolition permit.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park, 2011 SE Hamblen Road, lists treated lumber and construction materials as accepted; its prices are posted only as images, so call 816-287-2221. WM's Johnson County Landfill in Shawnee, Kansas, lists construction and demolition debris and treated wood. Neither publishes a homeowner rate in text.

Who takes the concrete slab?

The Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park takes concrete, asphalt, brick, cinder blocks and pavers for recycling, but not rebar, dirt or trash. ClearPath says it can pull anchors and leave the pad, and quotes pad removal as a separate job. Ask any crew up front.

What do I do with a metal shed or the paint inside?

Advantage Metals Recycling at 3005 Manchester Trafficway buys ferrous and non-ferrous scrap; call (816) 861-2700 about sheet steel or aluminum panels. Paint, pesticides and fuels go to the household hazardous waste facility at 4707 Deramus, open Thursday to Saturday. It does not take asbestos.

Will a junk company take the shed down or just haul it?

It depends. ClearPath says it empties the shed, takes it apart roof first and hauls everything off. Junk Zone cuts the shed into pieces and hauls it. LoadUp says some light disassembly may be needed. College HUNKS lists storage sheds without describing teardown, and My Junk Guy names shed removal without details, so ask.

Do I have to empty the shed first?

Not with every company. ClearPath says contents go on the same load if you want them gone, but flag paint, fuel or chemicals, which need a hazardous waste facility. LoadUp says a shed already taken apart costs less to remove.
