PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what St. Charles asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Maybe not. The City says structures of 500 sq ft or less with no utilities may not need a demolition permit. Otherwise it's $100 plus a $500 deposit, and historic districts need Landmarks Board approval.
No. Republic's free bulk pickup excludes construction material of any kind, and weekly trash won't take lumber, siding or roofing from home projects.

Recycle City walk-in trash disposal (City of St. Peters). General public: $125 minimum for up to 2,000 pounds, then $0.06 a pound, plus a $3.20-a-ton landfill tax. Residents of the host city with a Resident Privilege Card pay a $40 minimum for up to 800 pounds, up to 3 tons a year.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
For a permit, the City asks for an application with the square footage, structure type and a site photo; utility abandonment letters; a $500,000 certificate of insurance from a licensed demolition contractor; a Demolition Contractor's License from the Finance Department's Collections Division (636-949-3212); a $500 deposit, refunded after a post-demolition inspection; and a $100 fee. Permits expire three months after issue. Structures of 500 square feet or less with no utilities may not need one, so confirm with Community Development.
After a demolition, the City requires the site to be cleared of all rubble and debris within 30 days and any needed grades restored to pass final inspection. Hazardous materials must be handled with Missouri DNR before demolition starts.
The Building Division says utility sheds under 144 square feet without electric generally don't need a building permit, and larger sheds do. That rule covers putting a shed up. For tearing one down, go by the demolition page's 500-square-foot, no-utilities guidance.

No. Republic Services, the City's trash contractor, picks up two bulk items a week free, but its list of unacceptable bulk items includes concrete and construction material of any kind. The Trash Guidelines add that construction material from home projects, such as 2 by 4s, plywood, siding and roofing shingles, won't go out with weekly trash, and point you to a Republic roll-off instead (636-255-6142).

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗
131 Ecology Drive, St. Peters, MO 63376
City-run walk-in trash disposal that is open to the general public. Fees are based on the volume and type of trash. It does not take tires, yard waste, paint, engine oil or other flammable liquids, asbestos, sealed drums, gas bottles or hazardous materials, and loads with prohibited or falsely identified items draw a $250 fee. The page doesn't list lumber or construction debris either way, so call ahead with a shed load.
Fees: General public: $125 minimum for up to 2,000 pounds, then $0.06 a pound, plus a $3.20-a-ton landfill tax. Residents of the host city with a Resident Privilege Card pay a $40 minimum for up to 800 pounds, up to 3 tons a year.

60 Triad South Drive, St. Charles, MO 63304
County recycling center. It takes scrap metal from St. Charles County residents and all types of aluminum, so a metal shed cut into pieces can go here. Large hard plastic items such as play houses are accepted if cut into smaller pieces, but not vinyl siding or fencing. It does not take trash, wood, asbestos, carpet, tires or business waste.
Fees: No charge is listed for scrap metal; fees apply to appliances and electronics.
Before you go: Open Monday to Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; closed County holidays. Cash or check only. Questions: 636-949-7900, ext. 4273.
St. Charles contracts household trash to Republic Services, and City code reserves household garbage and rubbish to the City or its authorized collector. The code's definition of rubbish leaves out construction materials and debris from tearing down buildings, so shed debris isn't part of that franchise. Separately, anyone in the business of hauling garbage, rubbish, yard waste or recyclables from homes needs a hauler's license, a vehicle license for each truck and a driver license from the Finance Director. The hauler's license costs $50 a year and requires $1 million per person and $5 million per occurrence in liability insurance.

In the Frenchtown and Commons preservation districts, City code says no one may demolish or remove structures, in whole or in part, without a certificate of demolition or removal from the Historic Landmarks Preservation and Architectural Review Board. In the Extended Historic Preservation District, that rule does not apply to accessory buildings under 500 square feet unless the Community Development Director refers one to the Board. The Board meets monthly; Community Development (636-949-3222) can tell you whether your address is in a district.

When a demolition permit is needed, the City wants letters from Spire, Ameren and Public Works saying gas, electric, water and sewer have been abandoned, and a letter from Spire even if the property never had gas. Public Works must inspect the capped sewer and the cut water line before backfilling. Ameren's construction hotline is 866-992-6619 and Spire's abandonment desk is 314-499-5604.
