SHED REMOVAL IN BUFFALO

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Buffalo shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Buffalo requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Buffalo ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Buffalo asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Buffalo rules at a glance

Demolition permit

No, if it's 144 sq ft or less. Buffalo exempts small detached sheds unless they touch a property line or share a wall. Larger sheds need a demolition permit: $75 plus a $25 application fee.

City pickup

No. Buffalo bars construction debris at the curb and in City totes. Its bulk list mentions bundles of wood but not shed lumber, so call 311 before setting boards out.

Haul it yourself

East Side Transfer Station. Owner-occupied city parcels get up to 1 ton free per calendar year with a driver's license and a utility bill. Everyone else pays Waste Management's per-ton gate rate, which isn't published. Credit cards only.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Erie County. gotTRASH quotes light demolition on labor and debris; the others give free estimates.

Do I need a permit?Buffalo demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Small sheds: no permit; bigger sheds: $75

Code §103-2.1 requires a permit to demolish or remove any building or structure, but §103-2.3 exempts single-story, detached sheds, storage buildings and playhouses up to and including 144 square feet. The exemption ends if any wall or part of the shed is on a property line or shares a wall with another building. Above 144 square feet, the City's residential fee sheet charges $75 to demolish a detached accessory structure, plus the $25 application fee. Demolishing without a needed permit carries a $1,500 fine. Permit office: 716-851-4924.

02

Preservation Board review and a 30-day wait

City code sends demolition applications to the Office of Strategic Planning and Preservation Board for review, with a pending-demolition sign posted for 10 business days. The demolition page adds a 30-day wait from the application date, except in emergencies. Single-story garages for up to three cars are exempt from review unless they are landmarks or in a preservation district; the code names no such exemption for sheds. A sidewalk survey is also required before a demolition permit is issued.

04

Asbestos survey

New York's Industrial Code Rule 56 has the owner get an asbestos survey by a certified state inspector before demolishing a building or structure, and the Department of Labor says surveys are required for all demolitions regardless of construction date. Buffalo's demolition page also requires one. Removing asbestos-containing material needs a separate City abatement permit. Older sheds can have asbestos siding or roofing.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Buffalo pick up shed debris?

No. Each property gets weekly pickup of its City tote plus three bulk items, and the bulk list includes bundles of wood and brush. But the City's rules say no construction debris at the curb, and City code says construction or demolition debris can't go in the totes. Unwieldy items must be bundled no longer than four feet and no heavier than 50 pounds. Twice-yearly Large Bulk Waste pickups by Council District take piles up to 12 by 3 by 3 feet, and a 311 Pick and Pay pickup starts at $150 for that size; neither page says whether shed lumber qualifies. Call 311 before you set a cut-up shed out.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

East Side Transfer Station

793 South Ogden St., Buffalo, NY 14206

Transfer station run by Waste Management on behalf of the city that owns it. Erie County's recycling directory lists it as a drop-off for building materials, charged per ton. It refuses batteries, refrigerators, air conditioners, paint, oils, propane tanks, yard waste and tires.

Fees: Owner-occupied city parcels get up to 1 ton free per calendar year with a driver's license and a utility bill. Everyone else pays Waste Management's per-ton gate rate, which isn't published. Credit cards only.

Before you go: Residential drop-off is Monday to Friday 7 to 9 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Call 716-823-0795 to ask about shed lumber and the gate rate.

Casella Buffalo C&D Transfer (Union Transfer)

1700 Union Rd, West Seneca, NY 14224

Casella's construction and demolition debris transfer station. Erie County lists it as a drop-off for building materials that charges by the ton and takes no hazardous waste.

Fees: Not published online. Casella says fees are posted at the scale house and its customer care team can provide them.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and closed on major holidays. Call (716) 674-4325 before you go.

Niagara Metals (North Buffalo yard)

761 Hertel Ave., Buffalo, NY 14216

Scrap metal yard that buys steel, sheet iron, tin, aluminum and other metals. The company's roofing and siding page names aluminum roofing sheets and galvanized steel panels, so it suits a cut-up metal shed, not wood or shingles.

Fees: No drop-off fee; it pays for scrap at prices that change with the market.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Enter from Hertel Ave. and weigh in at the truck scale. Call (716) 873-5849.

Metzger Removal (North Tonawanda stone yard)

815 River Road, North Tonawanda, NY 14120

Concrete and asphalt recycler that sells crushed concrete and asphalt millings. It says clean concrete and asphalt are accepted at its permitted yards, which fits a broken-up shed slab.

Fees: Not published.

Before you go: Call (716) 692-1810 before hauling a slab. It has a second stone yard at 6411 Walmore Road.

Hauling solid waste in Buffalo takes a City license

Buffalo has no franchise hauler for demolition debris, but City code bars anyone from carrying or transporting solid waste over Buffalo streets while the City is collecting it, unless licensed under Chapter 263. A collector license starts with a written application to the Common Council, needs the consent of the Commissioner of Permit and Inspection Services, and is not transferable. The code's license definition speaks of commercial solid waste, and it doesn't say whether a crew hauling its own shed teardown needs one.

Contractors work under a City license

Buffalo licenses its own contractors, separate from any state or other city license. Its list of license types includes general, handyman and home improvement contractors and four grades of demolition license. The code lets homeowners and appropriately licensed handymen and contractors take down a small shed without a permit.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Buffalo?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Erie County, lower if it's already taken apart. Rapid Junk Removal gives a free on-site estimate covering removal, cleanup and disposal. gotTRASH bases its light demolition price on the labor and the amount of debris. K & H and Junk Job also offer free estimates.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Erie County lists two drop-offs for building materials near Buffalo, both charged by the ton. The East Side Transfer Station on South Ogden Street gives Buffalo owner-occupants a free ton each year. Casella's C&D transfer station at 1700 Union Road in West Seneca is open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and posts its fees at the scale house. Neither publishes a per-ton price online.

What can I do with a metal shed?

Scrap yards buy it. Niagara Metals' North Buffalo yard at 761 Hertel Ave. buys steel, sheet iron, tin and aluminum, and its roofing and siding page names galvanized steel panels and aluminum roofing sheets. Prices change with the market.

What about the concrete pad?

City pickup won't take it. Metzger Removal in North Tonawanda says clean concrete and asphalt are accepted at its permitted yards; call (716) 692-1810 before hauling broken slab.

Do I need to call 811 before pulling posts or footings?

If you're digging, yes. Submit a free location request with UDig NY online or by calling 811. State law gives member utilities two business days to respond.

What about paint, gas and chemicals stored in the shed?

Keep them out of the tote. Buffalo takes paint, oil, gas, pesticides and propane tanks only at special drop-off events held twice a year; call 311 for dates. The East Side Transfer Station refuses paint, oils, propane tanks and batteries.

Will the crew take the shed down or just haul it?

Rapid Junk Removal, K & H and gotTRASH say they tear sheds down and haul the debris; K & H says it takes almost every shed apart by hand. Junk Job lists shed removal among its residential services but doesn't describe the teardown.
