PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Cheektowaga asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Usually no. The Town's fee schedule says a residential accessory structure under 450 sq ft needs no demolition permit. Larger ones need a permit; the residential demolition base fee is $150.

Partly. Town Sanitation takes wood and shingles from a homeowner's own work, cut to 4 feet and tied under 40 lbs, up to six bundles or two totes. Contractor debris isn't collected.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Town Code §70-11 bars the removal or demolition of any building or structure without a permit from the Inspector, and leaves the fees to a schedule set by the Town Board. That schedule lists a residential accessory structure under 450 sq ft as 'no permit required' at $0, and a $150 base fee per structure for residential demolitions. Work under a demolition permit must start within 45 days, and the permit must be posted where it can be seen from the street. Building Department: 275 Alexander Avenue, (716) 686-3470.

Town Code says that three weeks before a building or part of one is demolished, the premises must be baited for rodent control by a licensed exterminator. The code doesn't say whether this applies to a small shed that needs no permit.
Town of Cheektowaga Code §70-11: Building and plumbing permits ↗
The Town's fee schedule says electrical inspections must be done by one of its approved electrical inspection agencies. Under §70-11, any plumbing permit must be pulled by a plumber licensed by the Town, so a shed with a water line needs a Town-licensed plumber for that part.

New York's Industrial Code Rule 56 has the owner get an asbestos survey by a certified state inspector before demolishing a building or structure, with a copy to the office that issues the demolition permit. The Department of Labor says surveys are required for all demolitions regardless of construction date. Older sheds can have asbestos siding or roofing.
Partly. Town Code lets the owner or occupant of a one- or two-family home set out plaster, wood and shingles from their own work, in a Town tote or tied in bundles no longer than 4 feet, 12 inches across and 40 pounds, up to two totes or six bundles per pickup. Nails and other sharp objects must come out first. Sanitation won't take debris from contracted work, or dirt, stone, brick and concrete, and it doesn't take landscape timbers, railroad ties or pallets. Metal goes out on garbage day only after you submit the Town's metal pick-up notification. Questions: Sanitation, (716) 686-3426.

The Town Code has no chapter licensing waste haulers, and no franchise for demolition debris was found. Town Sanitation collects household trash itself, with recycling run under contract by Modern Disposal Services. Debris from contracted work is the contractor's job: the Sanitation page says construction debris from contracted work must be disposed of by your contractor, and the code says building debris such as brick and concrete must be disposed of by the owner or contractor.

Cheektowaga is a town in Erie County, and the Town of Cheektowaga issues building permits and runs trash pickup. The Census also counts a Cheektowaga CDP of the same name, covering the town outside the villages. The town contains the village of Sloan and half of the village of Depew; homes there may follow village rules instead.

If you're replacing the old shed, the Town's shed guide says a permit is needed to erect or place even a pre-built shed. Sheds under 200 square feet need no permanent foundation, and all detached accessory buildings on a lot are capped at 750 square feet combined. Sheds can't sit in an easement or a required yard.

Niagara Metals runs a scrap yard at 3035 Union Rd in Cheektowaga that buys sheet iron, steel and aluminum, so a cut-up metal shed can go there instead of the trash. Bring a valid ID.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
