  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Tonawanda Town requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Tonawanda Town asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Tonawanda Town rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. Town Code requires a permit to demolish any building or structure, and its 144 sq ft shed exemption covers only putting one up. The demolition fee for a residential accessory structure is $40.

City pickup

Partly. Town pickup takes demolition debris from an owner's own work in a tote or tied bundles up to 72 inches and 60 pounds. It won't collect any contractor debris.

Haul it yourself

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Erie County. gotTRASH quotes light demolition on labor and debris; the others give free estimates.

Do I need a permit?Tonawanda Town demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Every shed teardown needs a $40 permit

Town Code §54-5(A) requires a building permit for the removal or demolition of any building or structure. The exemption in §54-5(B)(1) is for the construction or installation of one-story tool and storage sheds up to 144 square feet; it doesn't mention demolition. The Town's fee schedule, effective January 2, 2025, lists $40 to demolish a residential garage, pool or accessory structure. Starting work before the permit is issued doubles the fee or adds $50, whichever is greater. Building Department: 2005 Sheridan Drive, Suite 210, (716) 877-8801.

02

What the Town asks for before a demolition permit

The Building Department says the licensed demolition contractor submits a property survey, the Town Water Resources disconnect permit for water and sewer, and an asbestos survey and clearance letter. Before work starts the contractor posts a sign with its name and number, makes sure utilities are off, baits for rodents if harborage is found, fences the site and keeps water on hand for dust. Afterward it removes all debris and repairs any damage to sidewalks, curbs or streets. Town Code §54-5(G) also bars a demolition permit until all plumbing is disconnected as directed by the Director of Water Resources.

03

Asbestos survey

New York's Industrial Code Rule 56 has the owner get an asbestos survey by a certified state inspector before demolition, with a copy to the office that issues the demolition permit. The Department of Labor says surveys are required for all demolitions regardless of construction date, and the Town tells owners and contractors to call the DOL about asbestos at (716) 847-7126. Older sheds can have asbestos siding or roofing.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will the Town of Tonawanda pick up shed debris?

Partly. Town Code §181-4(F) lets construction and demolition debris from work by the owner or occupant go out in a tote or tied in bundles; no bundle may be over 72 inches long, 38 gallons or 60 pounds, and nails and other sharp objects must come out first. The Highway Department's flyer says wood and lumber must be cut and tied with heavy twine or rope, and metal strips or poles go out in bundles no longer than 6 feet, kept apart from wood. The Town will not collect any debris from work done by a contractor. Village of Kenmore homes are not on Town pickup. Questions: Highway Department, (716) 875-8822.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Niagara Metals (North Buffalo yard)

761 Hertel Ave., Buffalo, NY 14216

Scrap metal yard that buys steel, sheet iron, tin, aluminum and other metals. The company's roofing and siding page names aluminum roofing sheets and galvanized steel panels, so it suits a cut-up metal shed, not wood or shingles.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Enter from Hertel Ave. and weigh in at the truck scale. Call (716) 873-5849.

East Side Transfer Station

793 South Ogden St., Buffalo, NY 14206

Transfer station run by Waste Management on behalf of the city that owns it. Erie County's recycling directory lists it as a drop-off for building materials, charged per ton. It refuses batteries, refrigerators, air conditioners, paint, oils, propane tanks, yard waste and tires.

Fees: Owner-occupied city parcels get up to 1 ton free per calendar year with a driver's license and a utility bill. Everyone else pays Waste Management's per-ton gate rate, which isn't published. Credit cards only.

Before you go: Residential drop-off is Monday to Friday 7 to 9 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Call 716-823-0795 to ask about shed lumber and the gate rate.

What else should I know in Tonawanda Town?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Haulers and demolition crews need Town licenses

The Town of Tonawanda has no franchise hauler for demolition debris, but it licenses who can do the work. Town Code §181-7 requires any for-profit private collector that collects waste material from property in the town to register with the Town Clerk each year and get a license that takes effect only after Town Board approval, with the collector's name on both sides of each vehicle. Separately, Chapter 65 makes it unlawful to work as a contractor in the town without a Town contractor's license, and the Building Department says a demolition permit is pulled by a demolition contractor currently licensed in the Town. The code doesn't say whether a removal crew hauling its own shed debris counts as a private collector.

Town of Tonawanda, not the City of Tonawanda

This page covers the Town of Tonawanda in Erie County. The City of Tonawanda is a separate municipality with its own rules. The town includes neighborhoods such as Kenilworth, Brighton, Sheridan Parkside and Old Town, and the Village of Kenmore sits completely within its borders.

Kenmore runs its own building and trash rules

The Town's building code chapter applies to all properties in the town except the Village of Kenmore, and Town garbage collection also excludes the village. Kenmore requires contractors doing permit work in the village to hold a Village license, and its DPW picks up large trash such as furniture. Kenmore's own demolition rule for sheds wasn't found; call the Village Building Department at (716) 873-5700.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in the Town of Tonawanda?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Erie County, lower if it's already taken apart. Rapid Junk Removal gives a free estimate covering removal, cleanup and disposal. gotTRASH bases its light demolition price on the labor and the amount of debris. K & H and Junk Job also offer free estimates. Add the Town's $40 demolition permit fee.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Erie County lists Casella's Union Transfer at 1700 Union Road in West Seneca as a building-materials drop-off that charges by the ton. It's open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and posts fees at the scale house. Buffalo's East Side Transfer Station on South Ogden Street also takes non-city residents at Waste Management's per-ton gate rate. Neither publishes a price online.

Can a metal shed go to a scrap yard?

Yes. Niagara Metals' North Buffalo yard at 761 Hertel Ave. buys steel, sheet iron, tin and aluminum, and its roofing and siding page names galvanized steel panels and aluminum roofing sheets. Prices change with the market.

What about the concrete pad?

Metzger Removal's stone yard at 815 River Road in North Tonawanda says clean concrete and asphalt are accepted at its permitted yards. Call (716) 692-1810 before hauling broken slab.

Do I need to call 811 before pulling posts or footings?

Yes, if you're digging. The Town's building page says to contact 811 two days before digging. Submit a free location request with UDig NY online or by calling 811.

What about gas, paint and chemicals stored in the shed?

The Highway Department won't take gas, gas-oil mix or other flammable liquids, pesticides, acids or other toxic material. Paint goes to the curb in its original container, set apart from other trash, and used oil goes out sealed and labeled.

Will the crew take the shed down or just haul it?

Rapid Junk Removal, K & H and gotTRASH say they tear sheds down and haul the debris; K & H says it takes almost every shed apart by hand. Rapid is based on River Road in the town. Junk Job lists shed removal among its services but doesn't describe the teardown.
