PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Mount Pleasant asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Mount Pleasant requires a permit to demolish any building or structure and lists a $100 demolition fee. Its under-200-square-foot shed exemption is written for building permits, not teardowns.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The Building Inspection Division says Town codes require a permit to demolish any building or structure, and you apply online through the OPAL portal. The demo checklist calls for a site plan and a recent tree survey, with silt fence and tree protection installed before the permit is released. The fee schedule lists Demo Building/Structure at $100, plus a $30 issuing filing fee, and work begun without a permit is charged double. Questions: (843) 884-5184.

The Town's permitting FAQ lists one-story detached storage sheds under 200 square feet among projects that may not need a building permit, and Town Code § 150.002 says no permit is needed when the work is $1,000 or less unless an inspection is required. Neither says a teardown is exempt. Email buildinginspectionsdivision@tompsc.com with the shed's size and wiring to ask before you schedule.

Mount Pleasant also requires a permit to remove or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, so a wired shed needs its circuit dealt with properly. Call 811 before digging out posts or a slab. SCDES exempts the demolition of a private home with four or fewer units from its asbestos notice rules in most cases, but older asbestos cement panels and roofing felt can still need testing and careful disposal.

No. Mount Pleasant's weekly trash pickup collects furniture, appliances and metal items set at the curb in separate piles, but its list of items it cannot collect includes bricks, concrete, tree stumps, wet paint and contractor-generated debris from construction, demolition, remodeling or landscaping. Town code § 50.27 names scraps of lumber, roof tiles and guttering among the demolition materials the Town won't collect. Construction materials also can't go in the garbage cart. Shed contents such as an old table or a metal shelf can go out on garbage day.

No exclusive hauler or franchise rule for construction or demolition debris turned up in the Town code's garbage chapter or business license chapter. Section 50.27 says contractor-generated demolition debris, such as scraps of lumber and roof tiles, won't be collected by the Town and should be removed by the contractor doing the work. Mount Pleasant's demolition checklist asks for a site plan showing the structure and a tree survey less than a year old. Silt fence and tree protection must be in place before the demolition permit is released, and a building department site inspection closes the permit after the work. A shed near protected tree species may need a tree protection zone set up first.
