SHED REMOVAL IN NORTH CHARLESTON

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your North Charleston shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what North Charleston requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what North Charleston asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

North Charleston rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes. City code makes it a misdemeanor to demolish any structure without the proper permits. The fee follows the contract price; a job of $1,000 or less pays only the $30 filing fee. Call 843-740-2562.

City pickup

Only a little. Curbside trash takes up to 90 gallons of building materials per pickup, in its own pile. It won't take roofing shingles, creosote-treated wood or anything a contractor generated.

Haul it yourself

Bees Ferry Landfill and Convenience Center (Charleston County). No drop-off fee is listed for residents at County convenience centers, which the County's solid waste user fee funds ($150 a year per single-family home, on the property tax bill). The landfill lists municipal solid waste at $100 a ton.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Charleston County. Good Junk lists about $95 for one item and $400 to $650 for a full truck; College HUNKS shows $99 to $699.

Do I need a permit?North Charleston demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Demolition needs a City permit, and the fee follows the contract

City code says anyone who demolishes or moves a structure without first getting the proper permits is guilty of a misdemeanor, and the City's adopted codes cover removal and demolition of every building or structure. The Permit Fees page says demolition fees are based on the contract amount. Working without a permit can bring a fee of triple the permit fees. Permits are issued at 2500 City Hall Lane, One Stop Shop, third floor.

03

Asbestos rules rarely reach a backyard shed

SC Department of Environmental Services says demolition of a private home with four or fewer units is exempt from its asbestos demolition rules unless, for example, it is part of a larger commercial or public project or was used for non-residential purposes. Questions go to the SCDES Asbestos Section at 803-898-4289.

04

Call 811 before digging out posts or a slab

If removing the shed means digging out piers, anchors or a slab, call 811 or submit a locate request through SC811 first so buried utilities can be marked.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will North Charleston pick up shed debris?

A small amount. Weekly trash collection takes furniture and small amounts of construction debris in a separate pile, up to 90 gallons of building materials per pickup, and up to 1 cubic foot of concrete. It won't take roofing shingles, creosote-treated materials, mixed piles or trash generated by contractors, landscapers or businesses. City code limits building materials to what the occupant generates for home improvement or repair. Call 843-745-1026.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Bees Ferry Landfill and Convenience Center (Charleston County)

1344 Bees Ferry Rd., Charleston, SC 29414

The County landfill here does not accept construction and demolition waste from private or commercial haulers. The staffed convenience center on the same site takes residents' C&D and bulk items, including wood and lumber cut under 4 feet, plus scrap metal and small amounts of cement or bricks. Shingles and stucco are not taken in the C&D zone.

Fees: No drop-off fee is listed for residents at County convenience centers, which the County's solid waste user fee funds ($150 a year per single-family home, on the property tax bill). The landfill lists municipal solid waste at $100 a ton.

Before you go: Residents only: bring a government photo ID with a Charleston County address. Convenience center open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; double-axle trailers and box trucks need an appointment at 843-720-7111. Landfill questions: 843-571-0929.

Berkeley County Landfill (Berkeley County Water & Sanitation)

2277 Highway 52, Moncks Corner, SC 29461

County landfill with a scale house that lists a tipping fee for construction and demolition debris. Contractors pay at the gate when they leave.

Fees: Construction and demolition debris: $100 a ton with a 1-ton minimum. In-state checks with a copy of the signer's license, Visa, MasterCard or cash.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. No help unloading. Call 843-572-4400 to confirm a load from outside Berkeley County is accepted.

Charleston Steel & Metal

2700 Spruill Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405

Scrap metal buyer that takes steel and cast iron, tin, aluminum, copper and brass from individuals, which covers a metal shed's panels and frame once wood and other materials are removed.

Fees: It buys scrap; no prices are published. A picture ID is enough to sell steel; some non-ferrous metals need a South Carolina non-ferrous metals transportation permit.

Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon. Call 843-722-7278.

What else should I know in North Charleston?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

No franchised demolition hauler; contractor debris leaves by private means

No City franchise or hauler license for construction and demolition debris was found in North Charleston's code. Section 9-47 says lumber, roofing and similar material generated by a contractor must be removed by the contractor, owner or occupant through private means. Separately, Section 5-33 says only contractors licensed with the City and the state may pull building permits, with an exception for homeowners doing their own work.

A hired crew can't use the Bees Ferry Landfill for demolition debris

Charleston County's Bees Ferry Landfill does not accept construction and demolition waste from private or commercial haulers, and County convenience centers take residential vehicles and material only. The nearest public landfill found with a published C&D rate is the Berkeley County Landfill in Moncks Corner.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in North Charleston?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Charleston County, lower if it's already taken apart. Good Junk's FAQ says single-item pickups start around $95 and full truckloads typically run $400 to $650. College HUNKS, whose local office is on Business Circle, shows $99 to $699 for junk loads. The other listed companies quote each job.

What does the City demolition permit cost?

There is a $30 non-refundable filing fee. A job of $1,000 or less pays only that. From $1,001 to $50,000, add $15 for the first $1,000 plus $5 for each additional thousand. Plan review, when it applies, is half the permit fee, and the fee chart doesn't include a City business license.

Can I pull the permit myself?

City code lets homeowners pull permits for work they personally do on their primary residence, except electrical or gas work. Work on rental property needs a permit pulled by a licensed contractor. For a hired company, the City's accessory structure page asks for the contractor's state license, if applicable, and a signed contract showing scope and cost.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

Charleston County residents can take wood and lumber cut under 4 feet to a staffed County convenience center, such as Bees Ferry Road, with photo ID showing a County address; shingles aren't taken in the C&D area. Dorchester County residents should check Dorchester County's convenience sites. The Berkeley County Landfill lists C&D at $100 a ton, 1-ton minimum.

What about a metal shed or the concrete slab?

Charleston Steel & Metal on Spruill Avenue buys steel, tin and aluminum from individuals; steel needs only a picture ID. City trash pickup takes up to 1 cubic foot of concrete per pickup, so a slab needs a private hauler or a disposal site.

What about old paint, fuel and propane in the shed?

City trash won't collect paint, gasoline, oil, chemicals or pressurized containers. Charleston County convenience centers take household hazardous waste such as old paint, and the Bees Ferry Road center takes used gasoline.
