PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Milwaukee asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Not confirmed for small sheds: code requires a raze permit but exempts storage sheds of 150 sq ft or less, 3 ft from lot lines. Larger sheds: yes, $55 plus $0.005 per cubic foot.

No, not with bulky or special pickup: construction waste is excluded. Sanitation will collect construction and demolition waste by pre-paid request at $50 a cubic yard.
City of Milwaukee North Drop Off Center. By load size: free under 1 cubic yard, $20 for 1–3 cubic yards, $30 for 3–6, $50 for 6–10 and $90 for 10–18. Scrap metal and normal recyclables are free. Cash, debit and major credit cards.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Code §200-24 says no one may raze or demolish any building or structure without a DNS permit. Its exceptions list storage sheds of 150 square feet or less that are at least 3 feet from property lines, and DNS's shed sheet says building a shed that size needs no permit but that demolishing an old shed or garage may require a raze permit. DNS's checklist says demolishing a garage needs one. The raze fee is $55 plus $0.005 per cubic foot of volume, plus a $20 processing fee and a 1.6% surcharge. Permit & Development Center: 414-286-8210.

City code says anyone applying for a permit under §200-24 must include a statement from a Wisconsin-certified asbestos inspector or similar professional saying whether the work is an asbestos project. Separately, the Wisconsin DNR doesn't require its demolition notice for a single, isolated home with four or fewer units, but garages and other residential buildings are covered when they are part of a larger project. Older sheds can have asbestos siding or roofing.

Code says a copy of every raze permit goes to the Health Commissioner, who has the property inspected for rats and other vermin and acts if any are found. No published rule requiring a baiting certificate before a shed comes down was found.
Milwaukee Code of Ordinances ch. 200, subch. 4: Permits (PDF) ↗
DNS's demolition checklist lists a $20,000 bond for a one-time demolition, insurance naming the City, an asbestos and environmental survey, a 10-day DNR or DHS notice, a plumber's permit to seal sewer and water, and an erosion control plan. The street photo and historic review steps are for primary structures. Ask DNS which items apply to a shed.
Not with regular or special bulky pickup. Sanitation says loose or mixed materials, including construction waste, aren't eligible for special pickup, and such a pile is referred to DNS as a property violation. Construction and demolition waste is collected separately by pre-paid request at $50 a cubic yard; call 414-286-CITY (2489). Bulky pickup is only for properties with City garbage service.

Milwaukee has no franchised hauler for demolition debris, but City code says no one except DPW crews may collect or transport waste on a street or alley unless acting under a licensed private waste collector, and each vehicle must carry a license sticker. The City Clerk's license costs $65 per vehicle and runs two years. The code doesn't say whether a crew hauling debris from its own teardown needs it. The City's License Search lists holders.

DNS says that on a historic property no exterior change may be made until the owner gets a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission, whatever the permit rules say. City code's 16-working-day wait and newspaper notice for demolition applications does not apply to private accessory sheds or garages.

The two City Drop Off Centers take lumber, roofing, paneling, brick, block and concrete from City residents for a volume fee. Old paint, stain, fuel and garden chemicals from the shed don't belong in a debris load. The City sends residents to the household hazardous waste program run by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, open to all Milwaukee County residents, at permanent and mobile sites.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
