PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Palo Alto asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, as written. Palo Alto requires a building permit for any deconstruction of a structure. Its exemption for sheds up to 120 square feet covers building, not removal. Confirm with Development Services, 650-329-2496.

Only a little. GreenWaste's two yearly Clean Up Days take up to six labeled boxes or bundles of construction material under 60 pounds each, but no treated wood.
Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT Station). Rate schedule effective August 2026, per cubic yard: mixed C&D $57; clean untreated wood up to 6 feet $38; asphalt shingles $78; clean concrete under 2' x 2' x 4" $50; mixed concrete $98. The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The City's construction guide says a building permit is required for any new construction, deconstruction, remodeling or repair to a structure, and the exemption handout quotes the code: anyone who intends to demolish a building or structure must first get a permit. The handout's exemption for one-story sheds up to 120 square feet is written for building them, and it still requires a permit for any electrical, plumbing or mechanical work. The deconstruction checklist adds an Air District J number and City Utilities disconnects before the permit issues. No shed demolition fee is published on the pages reviewed.

The Bay Area Air District must be notified at least 10 business days before every demolition, whatever the asbestos content, and Palo Alto's checklist asks for the J number before the permit issues. Homes with four or fewer units can give 72 hours' notice for an extra fee. The rule skips the full survey for small residential buildings but still requires testing if cement siding, stucco or resilient flooring will be disturbed.

Any bin or debris box at a deconstruction or construction site must come from GreenWaste of Palo Alto, 650-493-4894. Its boxes run from 15 cubic yards, meant for heavy loads like concrete, up to 40, and none may hold treated wood. Contractors may self-haul by truck instead, but must sort materials and take them to a City-approved facility listed in Green Halo.

Not a whole shed. Single-family homes get two Clean Up Days a year from GreenWaste. Each takes up to six boxes or bundles of construction material, such as fencing, plywood or concrete, each under 60 pounds, 2 by 3 feet or smaller and labeled "construction", plus up to three bulky items of 200 pounds or less. Treated wood is not accepted. A teardown needs a GreenWaste debris box, a contractor or a trip to a transfer station.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Palo Alto's code says no one but the City's collector, GreenWaste of Palo Alto, may collect or haul any refuse from the city for a fee, and residents may not hire any other solid waste company to haul it. A licensed contractor under contract to deconstruct or demolish a structure may haul that job's debris, but only with its own employees and vehicles, and no container other than GreenWaste's may be placed. Residents may self-haul occasional loads from their own home, and anyone may use another company for concrete.

Palo Alto's deconstruction ordinance applies to all residential projects that include a whole structure demolition requiring a demolition permit. The only named exemption is a project that is solely the demolition of an accessory dwelling unit, so the code does not exempt sheds by name. A covered project needs a salvage survey from a City-approved reuse group before the permit issues, careful take-down, and materials sorted for reuse and recycling. The Public Works Director may waive it for structures with no reusable or recyclable materials, such as painted or treated wood, or when the materials are incidental in quantity.
