SHED REMOVAL IN SAN JOSE

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your San Jose shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what San Jose requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your San Jose ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what San Jose asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

San Jose rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes, if the shed is over 120 square feet. San Jose needs a building permit to remove an accessory structure that size; at 120 square feet or less, the city says no permit is required.

City pickup

Partly. Free Junk Pickup takes untreated wood cut into tied bundles of 5 by 2 feet and 60 pounds, up to 12 items, but no construction debris.

Haul it yourself

GreenWaste Zanker Resource Recovery Facility. Gate rates effective July 1, 2026, per ton: mixed C&D $147; clean wood $89, mixed wood $147; clean concrete $31.50; composite roofing $147; treated wood waste $254.25. The facility page lists a $60 minimum charge per vehicle. Prices subject to change.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a San Jose shed and sets the price at booking. Five other companies quote each job; Baypro lists a general $199 starting price.

Do I need a permit?San Jose demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Building permit for sheds over 120 square feet

San Jose's demolitions page lists removal of a shed, gazebo, detached garage, playhouse or other accessory structure "with a floor area greater than 120 square feet" among demolitions that need a building permit, and says a structure of 120 square feet or less needs none. The city recommends a licensed contractor as applicant; an owner who applies files an Owner-Builder form. The fee schedule has no demolition line, so call the Permit Center at 408-535-3555 for the cost.

02

Air District job number and PCB form come first

Before applying, you need a job number from the Bay Area Air District, whether or not asbestos is involved, and a PCBs Screening Assessment Form. Wood-framed structures are exempt from PCB testing, but the signed form is still required. The Air District wants notice at least 10 business days ahead; homes with four or fewer units can pay extra for 72 hours. Its rule skips the full survey for small residential buildings but still requires testing if cement siding or stucco will be disturbed.

03

Refundable diversion deposit on permitted teardowns

Every residential demolition with a building permit pays a Construction and Demolition Diversion Deposit at permit issuance: $0.35 a square foot on the August 2026 fee schedule. You get it back by recycling at least 50% of the debris at a City-certified facility and uploading weigh tickets through Waste Tracking San Jose within 365 days of final inspection. Work that needs no building permit is exempt.

04

Taking out the shed's wiring

Bulletin #201 lists removal of electrical wiring among work exempt from an electrical permit. The 120-square-foot exemption in the same bulletin is for building a shed that "will not be electrically wired", so it says nothing about tearing one down. Shut the circuit off at the panel before anyone cuts into the walls.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will San Jose pick up shed debris?

Only a few pieces. Junk Pickup is free for San Jose houses and apartments, scheduled through 311 or (408) 535-3500, with up to 12 items on your collection day. Wood counts if it is untreated, has no nails sticking out and is cut and tied into bundles no bigger than 5 by 2 feet and 60 pounds; scrap metal goes the same way. It refuses construction debris and glass, and items must come from your home. For a whole shed the city points to self-haul, a licensed hauler or an approved debris box.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Newby Island Landfill and Resource Recovery Park (Republic Services)

It does not accept hazardous materials. StopWaste's RE:Source lists it for treated wood drop-off; call first.

Fees: Rate sheet effective July 1, 2023, priced by the yard with a 1-yard minimum: clean C&D $63; demolition with hard-to-handle materials $67; trash $68; clean concrete or asphalt $34 to $65 by piece size. Clean composition roofing $98 a ton. A $19.71 environmental fee and a fuel recovery fee apply to every load. The sheet says pricing may change without notice.

Before you go: Public disposal hours are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; closed Sunday. Tarp open loads. Yardage is based on the vehicle's full capacity. Call 408-262-1401 to confirm current rates and treated wood terms.

What else should I know in San Jose?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only City-approved haulers may drop a debris box

San Jose runs a non-exclusive franchise for construction and demolition debris and residential clean-outs. Only haulers with prior City approval may haul temporary waste bins, and the city lists them by name; unauthorized haulers face fines. The code lets a contractor remove waste as an incidental part of the work it is doing, but not as a separately contracted hauling job. Homeowners may haul their own rubbish to a landfill or transfer station, up to 8 cubic yards per trip.

Historic properties need Planning approval first

The city exempts residential accessory structures such as sheds from a Planning clearance, unless the property is on San Jose's Historic Resources Inventory. If it is, the Planning Division must approve the demolition before the building permit is issued.

Pressure-treated wood is sorted out and costs more

Shed floors, skids and posts are often pressure-treated. San Jose's free Junk Pickup takes wood but says no treated wood. Zanker's wood area turns it away and its rate sheet charges $254.25 a ton for treated wood waste; Guadalupe charges $186 a ton and needs a signed acceptance form from public customers.

Paint and chemicals from the shed go free

Clear out old paint, pesticides and propane tanks before teardown. Santa Clara County's household hazardous waste program takes them free by appointment at (408) 299-7300, and San Jose has a permanent drop-off at the Environmental Innovation Center. Landfills and Junk Pickup won't take them.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in San Jose?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp's San Jose page gives $94 to $1,559 depending on size, condition and permits, with the real price shown at booking. SFC Junk Removal says its firm quote covers labor and disposal. Junk Wizard, Bay Area Demolition and Hauling and Junksters quote each job.

What does it cost to haul the debris myself?

GreenWaste Zanker in north San Jose charges $147 a ton for mixed C&D and $89 a ton for clean wood, with a $60 minimum per vehicle. Guadalupe in south San Jose charges $168 a ton for C&D recycling, or $129 a ton as general debris with a $92 minimum for a car or pickup, plus an 18.9% fee; it takes cards only and requires a safety vest.

How big is the diversion deposit for a shed?

It's $0.35 per square foot for a residential demolition, so about $70 for a 200-square-foot shed, collected when the permit is issued. It's a refundable deposit, not a fee: recycle at least half the debris at a City-certified facility and keep weigh tickets showing the address or permit number.

Can I take the shed down and haul it myself?

Yes. Owners can apply for the permit with an Owner-Builder form, though the city recommends a licensed contractor. The code lets a resident deliver their own rubbish to a landfill or transfer station as long as no single load exceeds 8 cubic yards. Cover the load: Guadalupe charges $34 for an untarped load.

Where does a concrete slab or metal shed go?

Zanker takes clean concrete for $31.50 a ton, with pieces over 3 by 3 by 3 feet charged as oversized. Guadalupe takes clean concrete under 24 inches with no rebar for $56 a ton and lists scrap metal among the materials it recycles. Newby Island in Milpitas also takes clean concrete.

Who tears it down, and who only hauls?

Bay Area Demolition and Hauling is a licensed demolition contractor based in San Jose. Junk Wizard, on Snell Avenue, says it handles any needed permits or paperwork. SFC, Baypro and Junksters dismantle and haul. LoadUp books independent haulers for light disassembly and says jobs needing heavy machinery may be outside its scope.
