SHED REMOVAL IN SUNNYVALE

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Sunnyvale shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Sunnyvale requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Sunnyvale asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Sunnyvale rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Likely yes. Sunnyvale requires a demolition permit to remove an entire building or structure, and its 120-square-foot shed exemption covers building one. The FY 2026/27 permit fee is $458.

City pickup

Partly. On-call bulky pickup takes lumber and scrap wood up to 1 cubic yard, pieces under 6 feet. The city's guide sends whole sheds to the SMaRT Station for a fee.

Haul it yourself

Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT Station). Rate schedule effective August 2026, per cubic yard: mixed C&D $57; clean untreated wood up to 6 feet $38; asphalt shingles $78; clean concrete under 2' x 2' x 4" $50; mixed concrete $98. Minimum charge $29; $15 for an uncovered load. Two of the member cities get a discount.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a Sunnyvale shed and sets the price at booking. Five other companies quote each job; Baypro lists a general $199 starting price.

Do I need a permit?Sunnyvale demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Demolition permit for removing a structure

Sunnyvale's demolition handout says a demolition permit "is required for the removal of an entire building or structure" and must be in hand before work starts. It lists no size exemption. The 120-square-foot exemption for tool and storage sheds with no utilities appears only on the list of work that doesn't need a building permit. The FY 2026/27 demolition permit is $458, plus a $42.50 issuance fee and a 5% technology surcharge. Ask Planning first whether a Planning permit is also needed.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Sunnyvale pick up shed debris?

Only a small amount. Homes get two on-call bulky collections a year at no extra charge, booked online or at 408-730-7400. The city's waste guide accepts lumber, fencing and scrap wood for on-call pickup up to 1 cubic yard, with no piece over 6 feet. It lists no curbside collection for other construction debris such as concrete, drywall and window glass, and its entry for a shed says to haul it to the SMaRT Station for a fee.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Sunnyvale?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only Specialty Solid Waste may haul debris for pay, with a demolition-contractor exception

Sunnyvale's code makes it unlawful for anyone but the authorized collector, Specialty Solid Waste & Recycling, to be in the business of collecting or hauling discarded materials or C&D, and bars residents from hiring any other hauler to take waste to a facility. The exception for C&D lets a licensed contractor with the demolition contract haul the debris, using its own payroll employees and vehicles it owns or controls. A resident may also self-haul occasional loads from their own home in their own vehicle.

Self-hauling contractors must sort the load

The city's demolition handout says a contractor that self-hauls must separate recyclable material by type on site and may not carry it as mixed C&D. Specialty Solid Waste rents debris boxes for mixed C&D at 408-565-9900. Other businesses may take recyclable material only if they aren't paid for the service.

Free dumping on Extra Dumping Weekends

Twice a year, in spring and fall, Sunnyvale residents may drop off garbage, concrete and demolition materials at the SMaRT Station at no charge. Dates are posted on the Environmental Services calendar.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

Other companies’ advertised prices

LoadUp's Sunnyvale shed page shows a $94 to $1,559 range and sets the real price at booking. Baypro's shed page says prices start at $199, but that isn't a shed price. The other companies quote each shed. None of the prices says it includes Sunnyvale's $458 demolition permit or the Air District notice.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Sunnyvale?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp's Sunnyvale page gives $94 to $1,559 depending on size, condition and permits, with the real price shown at booking; an already-disassembled shed costs less. SFC Junk Removal says its quote covers labor and disposal.

What does the SMaRT Station charge for shed debris?

It charges by the cubic yard: $57 for mixed construction and demolition debris, $38 for clean, unpainted, untreated wood up to 6 feet long (nails OK), $78 for asphalt shingles and $50 for clean concrete under 2 feet by 2 feet by 4 inches. The minimum is $29, and an uncovered load costs $15. Mountain View and Sunnyvale customers get a discount.

Who can use the SMaRT Station?

Residents and businesses of Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. Bring a driver's license showing proof of residency or a business license showing where you operate. It's open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Does a shed teardown have recycling rules?

If it needs a permit, you register a waste plan in Green Halo and upload weight tickets for material taken off site. The 65% diversion rule, with a penalty for falling short, applies to commercial demolition and to residential projects removing half or more of an exterior wall; the city doesn't say how that applies to a detached shed.

Where does a concrete slab or treated lumber go?

The city's waste guide lists Stevens Creek Quarry at 301 Carl Road for clean concrete, dirt and asphalt; call 408-454-6870. Treated wood can't go to the SMaRT Station or Zanker's wood area; Newby Island in Milpitas is the nearby landfill to call.

Who tears it down, and who only hauls?

Bay Area Demolition and Hauling is a licensed demolition contractor from San Jose that serves Sunnyvale. Junk Wizard says it handles any needed permits or paperwork. SFC, Baypro and Junksters dismantle and haul. LoadUp books independent haulers for light disassembly, as an add-on.
