PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Sacramento asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes, by the code's wording. City Code requires a wrecking permit before demolishing any building or structure. The 120-square-foot shed exemption covers building, not demolition. Call (916) 264-5011 to confirm for a small shed.

Only small pieces. Household Junk Pickup takes lumber under 6 feet in a 4x4x9-foot pile, but refuses construction debris, concrete and treated wood. A whole teardown won't fit.

Weighed loads (trailers, box trucks): normal refuse $89.90 a ton; clean wood $115.65 a ton; wood structures over 6 feet reinforced with metal $202.85 a ton (the table also shows $202.90); $50 minimum. Clean metal 8 feet or shorter, no fee. $25 extra for an uncovered load. Cash, card or check.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
City Code 15.44.020 says the wrecker must get a permit from the building official "prior to commencing any demolition or wrecking work on any building or structure." Permits go only to a licensed contractor or someone exempt from state license law, such as an owner doing their own work. The CDD-0233 packet routes the application through Planning, Fire, Solid Waste and Utilities. The fee is set by City Council resolution and isn't on the City's fee pages.

City Code 15.44.130 says all utilities to a building or structure must be disconnected before demolition starts, done or supervised by the utility or agency. Sewer disconnects follow Chapter 15.24. A wired shed needs this before teardown.

Sac Metro Air District Rule 902 calls for an asbestos survey and notice for demolitions of any size at regulated facilities. Its FAQ says the rule's definition of facility excludes "residential buildings having four or fewer dwelling units," and that single-family homes are not regulated "under most circumstances." The Air District decides edge cases at (279) 207-1122.

Only a little. City customers get two free Household Junk appointments a year, February through October, booked through 311. The pile must stay within 4 by 4 by 9 feet on the street. Wood and lumber are accepted if no longer than 6 feet. Construction debris such as dirt, rock, rubble and concrete is not, and neither is treated wood. Extra pickups start at $39.48.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Sacramento runs a non-exclusive franchise: the City lists 21 private companies with franchises to haul construction and demolition waste. The City's hauler page says homes producing C&D waste must hire one of them unless an exception in City Code 13.24.060 applies. That section bars anyone from the business of collecting or hauling commercial waste without a franchise, except when the waste is "generated and hauled by the same person." The C&D page applies this to demolition: mixed debris goes to a certified sorting facility by a franchised hauler "OR self-hauled by the project contractor." A homeowner may also haul rubbish from their own home.

The City's wrecking permit packet asks whether the structure is an accessory structure and whether it is over 50 years old. If both are yes, you file a Demolition/Relocation Investigation and Report with Planning. The fee is $468 plus an 8% technology fee, and Preservation staff have a 45-day review period. Listed landmarks and contributing resources in historic districts need a separate Planning entitlement instead.

Sacramento makes all demolition permits recycle 65% of the debris and file a waste plan in Green Halo. Its C&D page lists "residential prefabricated structures (sheds, etc.)" and detached residential garages as exemptions. Shed floors, skids and posts are often pressure-treated. The County says only Kiefer Landfill takes treated wood waste, and the City's junk pickup refuses it.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
