SHED REMOVAL IN THOUSAND OAKS

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Thousand Oaks shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Thousand Oaks requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Thousand Oaks ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Thousand Oaks asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Thousand Oaks rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Yes, as written. Thousand Oaks requires a separate demolition permit to raze any building or structure; its 120-square-foot shed exemption covers building permits only. Confirm with the Building Division, (805) 449-2320.

City pickup

No. Athens' bulky pickups refuse construction debris and loose building materials or lumber. A teardown needs a franchised hauler's bin, a self-haul trip or a removal company.

Haul it yourself

Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center (WM). No current gate rates are published online; call for rates. WM holds a few free landfill days a year for residents of nearby cities (two loads per event, proof of residency); contractor and commercial vehicles pay standard rates.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: The Junk Wizards lists $199 to $499 for a typical backyard shed, teardown and haul included. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 in Ventura County. Others quote each shed.

Do I need a permit?Thousand Oaks demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A demolition permit to remove the shed

City code says no one may raze any building or structure without first getting a separate demolition permit for each one, with an application, a preliminary site inspection and fees set by City Council resolution. Before the permit issues, utility services must be terminated by the utility and written notice given to the Building Division. Afterward the site is regraded, all debris removed and a final inspection scheduled. Partly demolishing a building takes an alteration permit instead. The code's exemption for one-story sheds of 120 square feet or less and 12 feet or less in height applies to building permits; the demolition section has no size exemption. No demolition fee amount is published on the pages reviewed.

03

Asbestos check and Air District notice

The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District says a building must be surveyed for asbestos to get a demolition permit, and Rule 62.7 requires notice for any demolition where asbestos is present. For homes with four or fewer units, there's no 10-day wait or fee, but the notice must arrive before work starts. Owner-occupants working on their own single-unit home are exempt. Asbestos is likely in buildings built before 1979. Call (805) 303-4005.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Thousand Oaks?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Only City-franchised haulers may collect debris; owners and contractors may self-haul

Thousand Oaks' code makes it unlawful to collect or transport solid waste in the City unless you hold an Exclusive or Limited Franchise or a City permit, and construction and demolition waste is part of the Limited Franchise for temporary service. The code's exceptions include an owner or occupant hauling their own waste to a licensed facility, and a licensed land-clearing contractor, a term the code says doesn't cover demolition material. The City's bin page goes further and says property owners or construction contractors may self-haul debris with their own vehicles and equipment. Neither source says whether a junk-removal company that isn't a construction contractor may haul shed debris for a fee. Questions: Sustainability Division, (805) 449-7283 or gogreen@toaks.gov.

Every permitted demolition needs a 65% recycling plan

The City's C&D ordinance covers all demolition of residential structures that requires a permit, whatever the size. Before the permit issues, the applicant files a recycling plan through Green Halo, names a City-permitted hauler or signs a statement that they will self-haul, and pays a $100 review fee (projects under 50,000 square feet). Weight tickets showing at least 65% diversion are due before final inspection. The City says the nearest mixed C&D processing facility is at the Simi Valley Landfill. A compliance official may exempt work that won't produce significant debris.

Oak trees have a protected zone

Thousand Oaks protects all oaks over two inches in diameter. The protected zone runs five feet past the canopy edge or 15 feet from the trunk, whichever is greater, and any work affecting the tree or soil there needs a permit, other than removing dead wood. If a shed or its slab sits under an oak, ask Community Development at (805) 449-2323 before digging out footings.

Paint and chemicals go to the HHW facility

Clear old paint, pesticides, pool chemicals and solvents out of the shed first. The household hazardous waste facility at 2010 Conejo Center Drive is open by appointment Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for Thousand Oaks and unincorporated Ventura County residents. Call (800) 356-8570 to book.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Thousand Oaks?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, The Junk Wizards starts demo jobs at $199 and says a typical backyard shed runs $199 to $499, with slab removal extra. LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Ventura County, lower if it's already taken apart. Prestige charges a $100 to $350 demolition fee plus $245 to $275 for each quarter of its truck. College HUNKS lists storage sheds and gives junk-load examples of $99 to $699. Jedi Junk Removal says its quote covers labor and disposal.

Can I rent a dumpster from any company?

No. Only the City's Limited Franchise haulers may provide bins and roll-offs for demolition and clean-up projects: Athens Services (805) 852-5264, E.J. Harrison and Sons (805) 647-1414 and Ware Disposal (877) 714-9273. For 2026 the City caps roll-off service at $242.12 per haul for 10 to 40 cubic yards, plus a per-ton disposal fee.

Can shed boards go in my green cart?

Maybe a few. Athens' green waste list includes untreated, unpainted lumber, plywood and scrap wood, but Athens also says waste from construction or demolition can't go in a regular cart. Ask Athens at (805) 852-5264 before filling the cart with shed boards, and keep painted or treated wood out.

Where can I haul the debris myself?

The Simi Valley Landfill & Recycling Center, about 10 miles away, runs a certified C&D recycling operation and takes construction and demolition debris; it posts no rates online, so call (805) 579-7267. Thousand Oaks residents get a few free landfill days there each year. Gold Coast Recycling in Ventura lists $93.18 a ton for C&D loads. Toland Road Landfill near Santa Paula charges $49.69 a ton for self-haul.

Who tears it down, and who only hauls?

The Junk Wizards, Jedi Junk Removal, Prestige and STUFF Junk Removal all describe tearing sheds down and hauling the debris; Prestige also takes the contents and removes a slab or paver base for extra. Essential Hauling lists shed removal and demolition. Mike's Done With Junk lists shed demolition and calls itself a hauling and removal service. College HUNKS lists storage sheds among items it hauls but doesn't describe a teardown.

Where does a metal shed go?

Scrap metal yards buy steel and aluminum panels. SA Recycling at 1441 Mountain View Ave. in Oxnard buys metal from the public; bring a government-issued photo ID, and pull out propane tanks and closed containers first.
