PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Fort Lauderdale asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Fort Lauderdale applies the Florida Building Code rule that demolishing a structure needs a permit. The minimum building permit fee is $131, or 1.75% of the job cost.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The City's permitting page quotes Florida Building Code 105.1: any owner, agent or contractor who wants to demolish a building or structure must first get a permit. The City also requires a permit to put up a shed. The new under-$7,500 exemption doesn't cover structural, electrical or plumbing work and needs written approval first. An owner of a one- or two-family home they live in may pull the permit as owner-builder. Permit Solutions Team: 954-828-3160.
Fort Lauderdale Building Services (Permitting Services) ↗Fort Lauderdale Permitting Updates: HB 803 and Fee Policies ↗
The Building Division's demolition checklist is written for structural demolition. It lists the Broward asbestos statement, a current survey marking the structure to be demolished, a pest control report showing the property is free of rodents, a debris form signed by the owner, and an FPL disconnect letter. An owner's demolition permit is good for 60 days. Ask which items apply to a backyard shed.

The fee schedule revised September 17, 2026 sets a stand-alone permit at a $131 minimum or 1.75% of construction cost. State surcharges and a $5 lien-law fee are added on top.

Electrical work is never exempt from a permit in Fort Lauderdale, so have a licensed electrician cut off a shed circuit. Pulling posts, piers or anchors is digging: the City says to call 811 first.

No. The City's monthly bulk pickup, for homes and buildings of three units or fewer, takes household items and yard waste in a pile up to 10 cubic yards. Construction debris isn't accepted, and the not-accepted list includes wood and metal walls, roofing materials, concrete and pavers. The brochure says renovation debris is the owner's job, by dumpster or a hauling service. Call 954-828-8000 for a list of disposal sites.

Fort Lauderdale has no single franchised hauler. Instead, its code says no one may haul solid waste over City streets for hire without a City license, and knowingly using an unlicensed collection company is a violation. The code's definition of solid waste includes construction and demolition debris. The City publishes a Licensed Collectors list of 24 firms, mostly dumpster and roll-off companies. XS Trash is on it; LoadUp and College HUNKS are not. Ask any company you hire whether it holds the City license.

Fort Lauderdale has three local historic districts, and Sailboat Bend is the largest, with more than 550 buildings. On a designated historic property, a Certificate of Appropriateness is required for any work that changes the exterior, and demolition is one of the listed categories. Historic Preservation reviews the permit application first.

Broward County asks anyone planning to demolish a structure to file a Statement of Responsibilities Regarding Asbestos online. Homes with four or fewer units are exempt from the asbestos rules themselves and pay no fee, but still need the filing to get the certificate that goes with the permit application.

Old paint, pesticides, fertilizer and pool chemicals often sit in a shed. The City's household hazardous waste events take them, but not construction debris. Hazardous waste can't go in bulk piles or carts.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
