PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Jacksonville asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. The City requires a permit to demolish a building or structure, with no shed exemption. The home-lot demolition fee is $450 under 1,000 square feet, if that line covers sheds.

Only a little. Homes may set out one cubic yard of building materials a week (two every other week in Waste Pro areas), in pieces under 5 feet and 40 pounds. Contractor debris isn't collected.
Trail Ridge Landfill (City of Jacksonville, run by WM). Weekdays: $30.30 a ton for regular waste, including building materials. Saturday residential rate: $1 for the first 500 pounds, then $30.30 a ton.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The City's permit page quotes the Florida Building Code: anyone who wants to demolish a building or structure must first get a permit. The only building work it lists as permit-free is a patio slab, and even new sheds of any size need a permit here. A demolition permit comes with a notarized grassing letter promising the lot will be graded and grassed or seeded within seven days after the structure is removed.

The City's fee table charges $37.50 plus a $12.50 development services fee and a $400 C&D debris fee per 1,000 square feet to demolish a single-family residential building. A separate line for structures other than buildings starts at $112.50 plus other fees. The City doesn't say which line covers a backyard shed, so ask when you apply.

A homeowner can pull permits in person at the Building Inspection Division, 214 N. Hogan St., Room 280, (904) 255-8500 option 4, for work on their own home. A licensed electrician you hire must get their own permit, so a shed circuit isn't a DIY job under your permit. Starting work without a permit is punishable by a $250 fine.

Only small amounts. In City and Meridian Waste areas, homeowners doing small projects may set out up to one cubic yard of building materials each week on garbage day; in Waste Pro's automated areas it's two cubic yards every other week on bulk day. Pieces can't be over 5 feet long or wide or weigh more than 40 pounds, and treated or painted wood must be cut to 6 feet or shorter. The code says the City won't haul debris from work done by a contractor, and the City says larger amounts need a rubbish removal company. Call 630-CITY (2489) with questions.

Jacksonville franchises the hauling of nonresidential solid waste, but its code lists construction and demolition debris as exempt waste, and the City's FAQ says the franchise rule applies to waste other than C&D debris and recyclables. Homes are different: the code says no one may provide waste collection and disposal service to homes of up to four units in an area served by a City contractor unless the City Council authorizes it. The code doesn't say whether a crew hauling away a shed it tore down counts as that service. Haulers taking C&D debris to a facility are asked to state whether it came from inside the City.

Jacksonville and Duval County are consolidated, but Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach and the Town of Baldwin keep their own zoning and building departments. If your home is in one of them, ask that town about a demolition permit instead of the City.

In local historic districts such as Riverside-Avondale and Springfield, the City requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior and site work, and its FAQ names sheds. Tearing down a contributing structure goes to the Historic Preservation Commission, with a $610 application fee. The Riverside-Avondale guidelines allow removing a garage, workshop or shed that is secondary and not architecturally significant. Check the City's map or call (904) 255-7800 first.
