PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Merritt Island asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Brevard County's residential demolition permit covers accessory structures and names sheds. Base fees for a job valued up to $1,000 add up to $176, plus state surcharges. Call (321) 633-2187.
No, not as regular trash. Only do-it-yourself debris that fits in your cart goes out with the garbage; County code has the hauler, Waste Management, remove other construction debris for a fee.

Central Disposal Facility (Brevard County). Free for a Brevard owner or tenant bringing C&D debris from their own home in a personal vehicle, with ID showing the address and proof of ownership or tenancy. From October 1, 2026, loads from a hired hauler pay $40.52 a ton for renovation or demolition debris; lumber, wood fencing and pallets are charged as land clearing debris at $52.01 a ton. Clean concrete is free. Only waste generated in Brevard County is accepted.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The County issues residential demolition permits for whole or partial structures, including accessory structures such as sheds, pools and carports, and staff review each application. You need a survey or a plot plan drawn to scale that marks the building to be torn down, a health department document if the home is on septic, and a Notice of Commencement only if the job is worth more than $5,000. Owner-builders must apply in person. Licensed contractors, including demolition contractors, can apply online.
The County lists a $25 application fee, a $10 unlicensed-contractor enforcement fee, and a building code review fee of $75 for the first $1,000 of job value plus $3.25 for each added $1,000. Land development, natural resources and zoning reviews add $15, $15 and $36. State surcharges of 1.5% and 1% of the building code fees, $2 minimum each, come on top.
Brevard's demolition page doesn't say how to handle a wired shed, so have a licensed electrician disconnect the circuit and ask the County whether it needs its own permit. Before pulling posts, piers or anchors, contact Sunshine 811.

Not a torn-down shed with your regular trash. Waste Management collects garbage twice a week in unincorporated Brevard and takes special collection items such as furniture and appliances when you call. But County Code § 94-76 lets construction debris from a homeowner's do-it-yourself project go out with the trash only if it fits in a cart; anything more is removed by the collector for a fee, by a roll-off company, or by you. Call Waste Management at (321) 636-6894 (north Brevard) or (321) 723-4455 (south Brevard).

Merritt Island is not a city. It is an unincorporated part of Brevard County, so the County's Building Permits office in Viera issues demolition permits ((321) 633-2187), and County code sets the trash and hauling rules. Waste Management collects curbside trash in unincorporated Brevard under a County contract.

Brevard County Code § 94-76 makes the property owner and whoever creates the debris responsible for removing it. It allows three ways: have it removed by the County's authorized collector for a fee, by a company with a County roll-off permit, or haul it yourself to a permitted disposal site. Construction debris is left out of the exclusive collection contracts (§§ 94-91 and 94-92), and roll-off containers need a County permit. The code doesn't say directly whether a junk or demolition company hauling a shed in its own truck needs a permit, though § 94-76 does set rates for loads 'brought in by a commercial hauler.'
Brevard County Code Ch. 94, Art. II (Collection; §§ 94-46, 94-76, 94-91 to 94-93) ↗
Brevard County doesn't charge an owner or tenant who brings construction debris from their own home in a personal vehicle. If you pay someone to haul it, the County treats the load as commercial waste and charges the gate rate, and a business hauling to County sites needs a gate account with a valid Business Tax Receipt and an active Sunbiz listing.
