PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Palm Bay asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Not confirmed for small sheds. Palm Bay's demolition permit ($125) asks for a plot plan and proof power is disconnected, and no shed exemption is published. Ask the Building Department, 321-953-8924.

The Building Department's demolition checklist covers residential and commercial buildings. It asks for a plot plan showing the buildings to be demolished, documentation of Palm Bay and FPL termination, a City disconnect affidavit or a certified electrician's letter that power is off, a notarized owner authorization, proof of ownership, and a recorded Notice of Commencement if the job is over $5,000. Land Development (321-733-3042) and Utilities (321-952-3410) may add their own requirements, and everything is filed online through the City's IMS portal. The FY 2025-26 fee schedule the Building page links lists $125 for demolition of a building or structure, plus a 0.25% City C&D surcharge and a 2.5% state surcharge. The checklist doesn't carve out small sheds. Call 321-953-8924 or email permitinfo@palmbayfl.gov.

If the shed has power, the demolition checklist wants proof the service is disconnected, and the Building page says electrical work needs a permit no matter the cost. Contact Sunshine 811 before pulling posts, piers or anchors.

No. Republic Services collects bulky items weekly with no volume limit, but the City code says bulky waste 'shall not include any excluded waste, construction debris,' and defines construction debris to include lumber and roofing from the destruction of a structure. Residents may not set excluded waste out for collection. Republic's guidelines add that wood fencing and pressure-treated wood will not be picked up and must go to a landfill. You can haul it to a County facility yourself, or hire a company to take the shed down and away.

Palm Bay's trash page says all construction and demolition debris collection and disposal businesses working in the city must apply for and operate under a non-exclusive franchise, with a $500 application fee and five-year terms, and that working without one violates the City code. The code itself, Sec. 150.30(D)(1), is narrower: it requires the franchise to 'place and/or service roll-off containers for the collection and transport of C&D debris.' Republic Services' exclusive residential franchise (Sec. 54.30) does not cover C&D debris. The City lists ten approved roll-off providers; none of the shed companies on this page is on it. Neither source says whether a crew hauling one shed in its own truck or trailer needs the franchise.

Sec. 150.30 makes construction and demolition contractors keep roll-offs, dump trailers, dump trucks or other containers on site for loose debris, and pick up anything scattered onto neighboring property by the end of the work day. Before a permit is issued, a contractor must certify in writing that it will arrange cleanup and legal disposal. The Building page links a Trash Containment Acknowledgement Form for this.

Brevard County's Sarno Landfill, at 3379 Sarno Road in Melbourne, takes lumber, drywall, metal and concrete but not treated wood. Republic tells Palm Bay residents to take pressure-treated fencing to 'either Sarno or Cocoa landfill,' but the County's Sarno page lists treated wood (CCA) as prohibited. The Central Disposal Facility in Cocoa lists it as accepted, so treated shed floors, skids and posts belong there.

Since July 1, 2026, Florida's HB 803 lets single-family owners skip a building permit for some work under $7,500. Palm Bay's Building page says electrical, plumbing and structural work still need a permit regardless of value, and it names sheds as structural. Small sheds under 120 square feet still need a permit through Land Development. That page is about building work; it doesn't mention demolition.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
