PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Palm City asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Martin County, which issues Palm City permits, says anyone who intends to demolish a building or structure must apply first, and it has a demolition checklist. Call 772-288-5916.

Only a small do-it-yourself share. Waste Management's curbside bulk pickup takes up to 2 cubic yards a week of DIY construction debris, including wood, but refuses contractor waste.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The County's permit page uses the Florida Building Code rule: anyone who intends to construct, alter, move or demolish a building or structure must apply and get a permit first, and it lists sheds among projects that need one. For exemptions it points to Florida Building Code Sec. 105.2. The demolition checklist asks for the building permit application and, for owner-builders, a disclosure statement signed in person at 900 SE Ruhnke Street; floor plans are needed only for partial demolition. The fee schedule effective July 1, 2026 bases fees on construction cost: under $25,000, a $75 building fee, $25 plan review and $75 per inspection. How a shed teardown is valued isn't stated; call 772-288-5916.

Since July 1, 2026, Florida's HB 803 lets some non-structural single-family work under $7,500 skip a permit, with County approval. Martin County says the exemption doesn't apply to electrical or structural work, or to lots in a flood zone, and names storage sheds as structural. That page is about building work and doesn't mention demolition.
Martin County: New Rules Related to Building Permit Exemptions (HB 803) ↗
The same permit rule covers anyone who intends to remove an electrical system, so a shed circuit needs to be handled under a permit by an electrician. Contact Sunshine 811 before pulling posts, piers or ground anchors, and mind septic and well lines on larger lots.
Only a little. Bulk pickup comes with regular Waste Management service on your garbage day, and the County lists DIY construction debris, up to 2 cubic yards a week, with wood and fencing among accepted items. It won't take construction debris from somewhere other than your property, or any construction material generated by a contractor, which the contractor must dispose of. Items too large for the truck are tagged and picked up within five business days. Call Waste Management at (772) 546-7700 to get on the route.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Martin County requires a franchise to run a solid waste collection business in unincorporated areas like Palm City, but Sec. 151.141 has carved out demolition debris since Oct. 1, 2023: 'any person may collect and transport bulky waste and construction and demolition debris' without a County franchise. The exemption doesn't cover infringing on a franchisee that holds an exclusive right to collect C&D in an area or from certain customers. The code doesn't say whether any such exclusive C&D franchise exists today. Waste Management holds the residential trash service.

Palm City is an unincorporated community, so Martin County is the permitting and solid waste authority. Building permits come from the Martin County Building Department at 900 SE Ruhnke Street in Stuart (772-288-5916), and trash service and the transfer station are run under Martin County rules.

Sec. 151.114 says construction and demolition debris at a demolition site must be kept in a commercial container or truck until it leaves. An owner doing the work at their own single-family home doesn't need a commercial container but must remove the debris promptly when done. Debris that blows onto neighboring property must be picked up the same day.
Martin County's only public drop-off for construction and demolition debris, the Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Facility, sits at 9101 SW Busch Street in Palm City. It's self-haul and self-unload.
Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
