PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Indianapolis asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. City code requires a permit for any demolition, and its 200 sq ft exemption covers only putting up a shed. A shed wrecking permit costs $94 plus a $40 application fee.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Code §536-201(a) makes it unlawful to do any construction, demolition or removal of structures without a permit, unless an exemption applies. The list of exemptions includes erecting a one-story structure of 200 square feet or less with no permanent foundation, wiring or heating, but no exemption for tearing one down. The fee for demolishing an accessory structure is $94, plus a $40 application fee. DBNS says wrecking fees did not change in its January 2026 update. The title holder must sign the wrecking permit, and it is obtained by the owner, a general contractor or a wrecking contractor. Under §536-202, an owner can get a permit for work done by the owner or the owner's employees. A hired company must be a City-listed contractor or licensed wrecking contractor to pull one.

City code says foundations, slabs and other parts of a wrecked structure are removed to one foot below ground. To leave a shed slab or pad in place, the owner packet says you file a Demolition Request saying what stays and how it will be used. A shed wired from the house needs an in-house disconnect notice; one with its own meter needs utility disconnect letters. Capping a sewer line takes a Citizens Energy Group permit that only a licensed contractor can get.

IDEM requires an asbestos inspection before demolition except at residential buildings with four or fewer units. Homeowners don't have to notify IDEM or follow its work-practice rules, but waste with regulated asbestos still has to be disposed of properly. South Side Landfill takes regulated asbestos only with prior approval.

No. DPW's heavy trash pickup takes up to two bulky items a month, and it says construction debris will not be accepted as heavy trash. Construction waste can't go in the 96-gallon cart either. The Citizens' Transfer Station on S. Belmont Ave. takes extra household and heavy trash for $2 a carload or $5 a pickup load on Saturdays, but it doesn't list construction debris.
If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Indianapolis has no franchise hauler for demolition debris, but anyone who hauls other people's waste, rubbish or discarded material in the city must first register with the license administrator (§955-1). The fee is $286 a year, the truck door must show the hauler's name and DPW number, and liability insurance is required. Owners hauling from their own property are exempt. The code also makes a homeowner liable if debris handed to someone else is dumped illegally, unless it went to a City-licensed hauler.

Indianapolis normally requires a licensed wrecking contractor to tear down a structure. Chapter 875 makes an exception for a one-story detached accessory structure under 577 square feet on the same lot as a one- or two-family home. The City's owner packet adds that an owner may wreck a detached accessory structure up to 577 square feet without meeting the usual 10-foot separation rules. Check a contractor's license on the City's lists.

Beech Grove, Lawrence, Southport and Speedway are not part of the Consolidated City of Indianapolis. DBNS tells residents there to check with their own town about contractors: Lawrence 317.545.8787, Speedway 317.241.2566, Beech Grove 317.788.4977, Southport 317.786.5489.
The wrecking application asks whether the lot is in a historic district and for a certificate of appropriateness number. The owner packet says approvals from the Regional Center, the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, Current Planning or Infrastructure may be required. Ask before taking down a shed in a historic district.
