PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Noblesville asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. City code requires a permit before demolishing any building or structure, and no shed exemption is published. The demolition permit is $150 per structure.
Noblesville Code § 154.15: Permit required ↗Noblesville Planning: Current Fee Schedule (PDF) ↗
No. Republic's weekly service won't take demolition debris or wood, and its paid bulk pickup takes only small bundles of construction debris.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
Code § 154.15 says a permit must be obtained before construction, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure. The City's permit guide sends new structures over 200 square feet to a permit, but it says nothing that exempts tearing a small shed down. The demolition permit costs $150 per structure, plus $50 for each additional structure on the same lot, on a fee schedule dated September 1, 2019. Apply through the Citizen Permit Portal; Planning: 317-776-6325.

The City's demolition form asks for a site plan showing the shed, the address where the debris will be dumped, and proof that utilities are disconnected. For an accessory structure only, the City needs to verify the power has been removed. Load receipts may be required after disposal, and you schedule a Planning inspection once the shed is gone.

If plumbing ran to the shed, Noblesville Utilities requires the sewer line dug up and capped before demolition and checks it while exposed. The Hamilton County Health Department handles private wells, septic systems and fuel tanks, which must be dealt with before demolition.

The City asks for an asbestos abatement report only for commercial demolitions or when two or more residential structures come down. IDEM doesn't require an inspection or notice at homes with four or fewer units, but asbestos waste still has to be disposed of properly.

Its on-call bulk pickup takes small amounts of construction debris bundled in 4-foot lengths under 40 pounds with no nails or screws showing, at $25 per item paid in advance. It won't take brick, cement or large metal pieces.

Noblesville has no franchise hauler for demolition debris, but § 91.10 says no one may run a business hauling ashes, trash or debris on City streets without a one-year license from the mayor. The fee is $10. The truck must hold at least 20 cubic feet (§ 91.11), and hauled debris must go to a sanitary landfill regulated by the City or designated by the Board of Public Works and Safety (§ 91.12).

Since a 2022 ordinance, tearing down a building inside the downtown boundary (Harrison Street to Division Street, and the White River to South 17th Street) takes a permit approved by the Plan Commission and the Common Council. The news report doesn't say whether sheds count. Ask Planning at 317-776-6325 before taking down a shed downtown.
