SHED REMOVAL IN COLUMBIA

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Columbia shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Columbia requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Columbia ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Columbia asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Columbia rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Likely yes. County code requires a permit to demolish any structure, and its 200-square-foot shed exemption is for building. Listed fees: $50 historic clearance, $50 permit. Confirm at 410-313-2455, option 4.

City pickup

No. County bulk pickup refuses construction debris and pressure-treated wood. A plastic shed taken apart can go out on recycling day if it has no metal parts.

Haul it yourself

Alpha Ridge Landfill Transfer Station (Howard County). Construction and demolition debris: $106 a ton. Commercial vehicles also need a $40 annual landfill permit for each vehicle. Residents' household waste is free up to 2 tons a year in a vehicle up to 3/4 ton registered in the County. Rates effective July 1, 2026, good through June 30, 2027.

Do I need a permit?Columbia demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Two County sign-offs before a teardown

Howard County's building code says anyone who intends to demolish a structure must first get a permit. Its permit exemption covers building a one-story shed of 200 square feet or less with an eave of 10 feet or less, and it says nothing about tearing one down. Every demolition in the County also needs clearance from Historic Preservation first: $50 per accessory structure, with color photos of each building. You then take that form to the permit office, where residential demolition is $50 a structure.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Howard County pick up shed debris in Columbia?

No, not the wood. Weekly County trash takes household trash only and sends construction debris to Alpha Ridge Landfill. Bulk pickup, for homes on County collection, takes up to 4 broken items under 6 feet wide, and its refused list includes construction debris, pressure-treated wood and wooden playhouses. Two exceptions help: a plastic shed taken apart can go out on your recycling day if it has no metal parts, and large metal items under 10 feet can go on a scheduled scrap metal pickup, twice a year. A metal shed isn't named on that list, so ask 410-313-6444 first.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Alpha Ridge Landfill Transfer Station (Howard County)

2350 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104

Howard County's only public landfill. It takes construction and demolition debris, which the County says includes treated and untreated lumber, siding, doors and windows, and it counts roofing shingles as construction debris. Residents hauling it cross the scales first. It takes only waste generated in Howard County, and it no longer takes soil or large amounts of stone, brick, block, asphalt or concrete from commercial contractors.

Fees: Construction and demolition debris: $106 a ton. Commercial vehicles also need a $40 annual landfill permit for each vehicle. Residents' household waste is free up to 2 tons a year in a vehicle up to 3/4 ton registered in the County. Rates effective July 1, 2026, good through June 30, 2027.

Before you go: Transfer station open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring proof of Howard County residency. Questions: 410-313-6444.

Alpha Ridge Residents' Convenience Center (Howard County)

2350 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104

Resident drop-off area at the Alpha Ridge Landfill for recyclables, including a scrap metal dumpster and rigid plastics. Rigid plastics must have no metal parts; metal parts go in the scrap metal area. It is not the place for construction debris, which goes to the transfer station.

Fees: No fee is listed for recyclables; the County says residents can bring unlimited recyclables.

Before you go: Open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proof of residency is required. No trailers, box trucks or rental trucks may enter.

Laney Recycling and Aggregates dump site

Old Gunpowder Road, between I-95 and US 29, Laurel, MD

Private dump site for concrete, asphalt, virgin stone, brick, block and related materials. It does not take loads of dirt. Useful for broken-up shed slabs and pavers, not for wood or mixed debris.

Fees: Not published; call for dump site fees and hours.

Before you go: Call (301) 953-1424 for fees and drop-off hours before you load.

What else should I know in Columbia?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Columbia isn't a city: Howard County makes the rules

Columbia has no city government. Howard County's Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits issues demolition permits, the Department of Planning and Zoning signs off on demolition clearance, and the Bureau of Environmental Services runs trash pickup and the Alpha Ridge Landfill. On top of that, most Columbia lots sit under one of the 10 villages' covenants, run by village architectural committees, not by the County.

Your village architectural committee is a separate approval

The County reminds Columbia Association-assessed owners that an exterior change may also need approval from the village Architectural Committee, and that a County permit doesn't replace it. The covenants require written approval before an existing structure is altered in a way that materially changes the exterior. No village guideline we read says outright whether taking a shed away counts. Town Center requires approval to build or install any shed, and Hickory Ridge needs an application for all sheds. Ask your village's covenant advisor before the shed comes down; Hickory Ridge says review usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.

No franchise hauler, but crews need a landfill permit

No Howard County page we read gives one company the sole right to haul debris; the County's waste plan says private haulers pick their own disposal site or deliver to Alpha Ridge. Any business truck that dumps at Alpha Ridge needs its own annual commercial landfill permit, $40 per vehicle. Only the County's contractors may pick up scrap metal at the curb, under County Code 18.610. No County hauler license for junk or demolition crews was found.

Crossing Columbia Association open space

Many Columbia back yards border Columbia Association open space. Town Center's guidelines tell owners to get permission from CA's Land Management Division (410-381-0194) before using open space during construction, and say contractors must not dump on or damage it. Hickory Ridge's guidelines say nothing may be disposed of on CA open space. Plan the carry-out route through your own yard or driveway.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Columbia?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp's Columbia page gives $94 to $1,559, depending on size, condition, location and permits, and less for a shed that's already taken apart. MD Junk Pros prices by size, materials, contents, pad and access after a free estimate.

Does my village have to approve taking the shed down?

Not confirmed. The covenants require written approval for changes that materially alter a structure's exterior, and the County says its permit doesn't replace village approval. No village guideline we read names shed removal. Call your village's covenant advisor; Hickory Ridge is 410-730-7327 and Town Center is 410-730-4744.

Can I put a dumpster in the driveway for the debris?

Hickory Ridge needs no application for a dumpster, but it limits dumpsters to 30 days a year and asks you to call the covenant advisor before one is delivered. Other villages set their own rules, so check yours.

What does it cost to take the wood to Alpha Ridge myself?

Construction and demolition debris is $106 a ton, and lumber, siding and shingles all count. You cross the scales at the transfer station, open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with proof of Howard County residency. A metal shed's panels can go free in the scrap metal dumpster at the Residents' Convenience Center, which doesn't allow trailers.

Where can a concrete shed slab go?

Alpha Ridge no longer takes large amounts of concrete, brick or block from commercial contractors. Laney Recycling's dump site in Laurel takes concrete, brick and block, but not dirt. It doesn't publish fees, so call (301) 953-1424.
