SHED REMOVAL IN ELLICOTT CITY

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Ellicott City shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Ellicott City requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Ellicott City ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Ellicott City asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Ellicott City rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Likely yes, plus a historic sign-off. County code requires a permit to demolish a structure, and every demolition needs Historic Preservation clearance. Inside the historic district, add a Certificate of Approval. Call 410-313-2350.

City pickup

No. Neither regular County trash nor the Historic Ellicott City collection takes lumber or construction debris. Bulk pickup refuses it too.

Haul it yourself

Alpha Ridge Landfill Transfer Station (Howard County). Construction and demolition debris: $106 a ton. Commercial vehicles also need a $40 annual landfill permit for each vehicle. Residents' household waste is free up to 2 tons a year in a vehicle up to 3/4 ton registered in the County. Rates effective July 1, 2026, good through June 30, 2027.

Do I need a permit?Ellicott City demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

Clearance first, then the demolition permit

Howard County requires Historic Preservation clearance for every demolition. Send the Planning and Zoning form with color photos of each structure; the fee is $50 for an accessory structure, or $250 for any structure in a historic district. Then take the signed form to the permit office for the demolition permit, $50 for a residential structure. The code's 200-square-foot shed exemption is written for building, not tearing down.

02

Historic district: Certificate of Approval before demolition

Demolition in the Ellicott City or Lawyers Hill historic district needs a Certificate of Approval from the Historic Preservation Commission. The guidelines say demolition is never routine maintenance, so it doesn't qualify for the routine-maintenance path. Ask DPZ staff at 410-313-2350 or preservation@howardcountymd.gov which review applies.

03

Utility releases and asbestos

A County demolition permit application needs a release from each listed agency, such as BGE and Public Works or the Health Department for a well or septic line. MDE regulates friable asbestos in single-family home demolition unless the homeowner does the work, and contractors must notify MDE 10 working days before removing regulated asbestos.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Will Howard County pick up shed debris in Ellicott City?

No. Most of Ellicott City gets weekly County trash, which takes household trash only and sends construction debris to Alpha Ridge. Inside the historic district, the County's Historic Ellicott City collection runs Monday, Thursday and Saturday, takes up to four items under 40 pounds each, and lists lumber, fencing and concrete as unacceptable. County bulk pickup also refuses construction debris and pressure-treated wood, though a plastic shed taken apart with no metal parts can go out on recycling day.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

Alpha Ridge Landfill Transfer Station (Howard County)

2350 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104

Howard County's only public landfill. It takes construction and demolition debris, which the County says includes treated and untreated lumber, siding, doors and windows, and it counts roofing shingles as construction debris. Residents hauling it cross the scales first. It takes only waste generated in Howard County, and it no longer takes soil or large amounts of stone, brick, block, asphalt or concrete from commercial contractors.

Fees: Construction and demolition debris: $106 a ton. Commercial vehicles also need a $40 annual landfill permit for each vehicle. Residents' household waste is free up to 2 tons a year in a vehicle up to 3/4 ton registered in the County. Rates effective July 1, 2026, good through June 30, 2027.

Before you go: Transfer station open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring proof of Howard County residency. Questions: 410-313-6444.

Alpha Ridge Residents' Convenience Center (Howard County)

2350 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104

Resident drop-off area at the Alpha Ridge Landfill for recyclables, including a scrap metal dumpster and rigid plastics. Rigid plastics must have no metal parts; metal parts go in the scrap metal area. It is not the place for construction debris, which goes to the transfer station.

Fees: No fee is listed for recyclables; the County says residents can bring unlimited recyclables.

Before you go: Open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proof of residency is required. No trailers, box trucks or rental trucks may enter.

Laney Recycling and Aggregates dump site

Old Gunpowder Road, between I-95 and US 29, Laurel, MD

Private dump site for concrete, asphalt, virgin stone, brick, block and related materials. It does not take loads of dirt. Useful for broken-up shed slabs and pavers, not for wood or mixed debris.

Fees: Not published; call for dump site fees and hours.

Before you go: Call (301) 953-1424 for fees and drop-off hours before you load.

What else should I know in Ellicott City?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

In the historic district, even a shed needs the Commission's OK

The Ellicott City Historic District is a local historic district, and Howard County's Historic Preservation Commission reviews exterior changes there. The district's design guidelines say demolition of any structure needs a Certificate of Approval, and they name sheds and garages along with houses. A shed the Commission finds isn't historic or doesn't add to the district's character is routinely approved, and the Commission also approves how the empty site is treated afterward. Inside the district, the County's demolition clearance fee is $250 instead of $50.

Ellicott City is the county seat, not a city

Ellicott City has no city government, though Howard County's permit and planning offices sit in the George Howard Building on Court House Drive here. The County's Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits issues demolition permits, the Department of Planning and Zoning handles historic clearance, and the Bureau of Environmental Services runs trash pickup and the Alpha Ridge Landfill.

Lots in the floodplain lose the small-shed exemption

Howard County's code says its permit exemptions, including the one for small sheds, don't apply to structures in the floodplain. The County's flood map site shows whether a lot is in a flood zone, and it tells owners making changes in the floodplain to check with the permit and planning offices first. If your shed sits near a stream, look up the lot before work starts.

No franchise hauler; Alpha Ridge needs a truck permit

Howard County doesn't give one company the sole right to haul demolition debris in the pages we read; its waste plan says private haulers choose their own disposal site or bring loads to Alpha Ridge. A business vehicle needs a $40 annual commercial landfill permit to dump there. Curbside scrap metal pickup is limited to County contractors under County Code 18.610. We found no County license for junk or demolition haulers.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

Shed Gone

Priced from your photos

A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Ellicott City?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp's Ellicott City page gives $94 to $1,559, depending on size, condition, location and permits. The others quote each job; MD Junk Pros asks for photos of all four sides, the inside and the access route.

Will the Commission make me keep an old shed?

Not if it isn't historic. The guidelines say a structure the Commission finds isn't historically significant is routinely approved for demolition. For historic buildings, the Commission approves demolition only after other ways to save them are exhausted.

What happens to the empty spot in the historic district?

The Commission approves that too. The guidelines say that for any demolition, the treatment of the site after the structure is removed must also be approved, so say in your application whether you'll seed, mulch or pave the spot.

My house is on the Historic Sites Inventory but outside the district. Does that matter?

For exterior changes, no: the County says inventory properties outside a district aren't subject to Commission review. But the demolition clearance form still asks whether a property is on the inventory, and DPZ may defer the request for review by the County's architectural historian.

Where do the shingles and siding go if I haul them myself?

To the Alpha Ridge Landfill transfer station on Marriottsville Road, where shingles, siding and lumber are all billed as construction debris at $106 a ton. Bring proof of Howard County residency; it's open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Broken concrete from a slab can go to Laney Recycling's dump site in Laurel; call (301) 953-1424 for fees.
