SHED REMOVAL IN BOSTON

We take it down.
We haul it away.

How it works ↗

Shed removal is all we do. Wood, metal or resin, falling apart or still standing, we take your Boston shed apart and leave the space clean.

  • Taking the shed apart: roof, walls, doors and floor
  • The stuff inside, if you want it gone too
  • Loading, haul-away and disposal, with metal and clean wood recycled where it’s accepted
  • The slab, gravel pad or footings, if you want them out
  • Sweeping and raking the spot clean

We check what Boston requires for your shed before any work starts, and any power to the shed must be disconnected by a licensed electrician before removal day. The local rules are below.

01

Send a photo.

Show us the shed and the way out, and add your Boston ZIP code. No payment, and it isn’t a booking.

02

Get our price.

We look at your photos and send our price, what it includes and the dates we have.

03

We haul it away.

We confirm a date, take the shed down, load every piece and leave the spot clean.

PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL

Doing it yourself, or just checking the rules?

Here’s what Boston asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.

Boston rules at a glance

Demolition permit

Likely yes. ISD's demolition permit needs Article 85, utility, pest-control and fire sign-offs. State code exempts tool sheds of 120 sq ft or less from permits but doesn't say if that covers teardown; ask ISD.

City pickup

No. Boston doesn't collect construction debris or fences, and its bulky item page says to donate construction material or hire a private hauler.

Haul it yourself

James G. Grant Co. C&D Transfer Station. $280 per ton, with a $280 minimum charge even for small loads. Scrap metal is bought; prices are not published.

What it costs

Shed Gone: a price from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included.

Others here: LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Suffolk County. College HUNKS lists $99 to $699 for general junk loads; others quote each shed.

Do I need a permit?Boston demolition rules, utilities and property checks.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗

01

A demolition permit from Inspectional Services

State code makes it unlawful to remove or demolish a building or structure without a permit. Boston's demolition permit is a short-form application with "removal of structure" as the work type. It needs an Article 85 approval, utility shut-off notices, a Boston Water and Sewer Commission closed service agreement, a Dig Safe number, a pest control letter, a licensed builder and a Boston Fire Prevention permit. The short-form fee is $20 plus $10 per $1,000 of estimated cost. ISD: 617-635-5300.

03

Article 85 demolition delay review

Before demolishing a building, Boston requires an Article 85 application to the Landmarks Commission. It covers all buildings at least 50 years old and every building Downtown, in Harborpark or in a Neighborhood Design Overlay District. Staff decide within 10 days of a complete application; a building found "significant" gets a public hearing. Designated landmarks and local historic districts have their own review. The page doesn't say whether a small shed counts as a building. Landmarks: 617-635-1935.

04

Asbestos in shingles and siding

MassDEP treats asphalt shingles, roofing felt and tar, and cement shingles or siding as suspect asbestos material. They need a survey by a DLS-licensed asbestos inspector before demolition, unless a homeowner does the work on non-friable material at an owner-occupied single-family home. If asbestos is found or presumed, an ANF-001 notice is due 10 working days before removal.

Can I dispose of it myself?City pickup rules, drop-off options and fees for shed debris.

Drop-off and recycling options

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗

What else should I know in Boston?Local notes, and the photos that set the price.

Haulers need a Boston Public Works permit to carry demolition debris

Boston has no exclusive hauler for demolition debris, but every commercial hauling truck that carries construction and demolition materials through City streets needs a Public Works hauler permit. It costs $300 per truck and is renewed every two years. Approved companies are listed as "officially authorized haulers", and collecting without a permit can bring a fine. The page doesn't say whether it covers a homeowner hauling their own debris. Public Works: 617-635-7574.

Pest control before and after the teardown

Boston's demolition permit checklist asks for a letter or bill from a pest control contractor saying pest management will be done before and after the demolition starts. Old sheds often hide rodent nests under the floor, so book the exterminator early.

Reusable doors, windows and long boards can be donated

Boston Building Resources at 100 Terrace Street in Roxbury takes building materials in good condition, by drop-off Tuesday and Saturday 10 to 2 or by appointment. Wood must be denailed and at least 5 feet long, doors must be solid-core and standard size, and it refuses rotten or flaking-paint materials. Pick-up starts at $150.

Photos that explain the job.

  • The whole shed, with the roof, doors and rough dimensions
  • What it sits on: slab, gravel, pavers, skids or blocks
  • The route out: gates, steps, slopes and the narrowest gap
  • Anything stored inside, and any wiring, lights or a water line

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few more answers.

How much does shed removal cost in Boston?

Shed Gone prices each shed from your photos, with teardown, haul-away and cleanup included. Among other companies, LoadUp shows $94 to $1,559 for a shed in Suffolk County, lower if it's already taken apart. College HUNKS lists $99 to $699 for general junk loads, priced by truck space. Two Guys and a Truck posts its shed chart only as an image and says foundations and contents are priced separately. Lug Away gives a free estimate that covers demolition and hauling.

Where can I take shed debris myself?

James G. Grant Co. runs a C&D transfer station at 28 Wolcott St. in Hyde Park that takes wood, metal, concrete and roofing debris from homeowners. It charges $280 a ton with a $280 minimum. It's open weekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 7 to noon, and closes without notice when it hits its daily tonnage limit, so call 617-361-2716 first.

Is sorting the debris cheaper?

Often. Conigliaro Industries in Framingham takes sorted loads by the ton: clean wood $275 ($150 minimum), brick and concrete $50, asphalt shingles $225 ($125 minimum) and light iron free. It refuses mixed C&D, painted, treated and plywood, and asbestos shingles.

What do I do with a metal shed?

James G. Grant Co. recycles ferrous and non-ferrous metal such as steel and aluminum at its Hyde Park yard. Conigliaro takes light iron at no tip fee. Metal is on the state waste ban list, so it shouldn't go in the trash.

What about paint, gas and propane stored in the shed?

Bring them to a Boston Zero Waste Day. Residents with ID can drop off oil-based paint, motor oil, pesticides, propane tanks and other chemicals, up to 20 gallons in containers of 5 gallons or less. The next one is November 21 at 315 Gardner Street in West Roxbury.

Will the crew take the shed down or just haul it?

Lug Away, Junk Removal Inc., Jeasan and Two Guys and a Truck say they tear sheds down and haul the debris. Junk Removal Inc. asks you to clear shelves and cabinets first. College HUNKS lists storage sheds only among items it hauls.

Do I need Dig Safe before pulling posts or a slab?

Yes. Boston's demolition checklist requires a Dig Safe reference number; call 1-888-DIG-SAFE before digging out piers, posts or footings.
