PERMITS & DIY DISPOSAL
Here’s what Brockton asks for before a shed comes down, what city pickup will take, and where you can drop off the debris yourself.
Yes. Brockton's Building Department lists demolition among work that needs a building permit, and city code sets a $50 demolition fee for a small accessory building up to 250 sq ft. Call 508-580-7150.

No. Brockton's residential trash service doesn't include construction debris, and the City tells residents to call a private hauler for construction and demolition debris.

The requirements depend on the structure, the work and the property’s jurisdiction. These are the official starting points for checking your job. Confirm with the building office before teardown day. How shed demolition permits work ↗
The state building code makes it unlawful to remove or demolish a building or structure without first getting a permit from the building official. Brockton's Building Department lists demolition among the work that needs a building permit, and applications are filed online. The state code does exempt building a one-story tool or storage shed of up to 120 square feet, but that exemption is written for construction; no source found extends it to tearing a shed down. Questions: 508-580-7150.

Section 4-4 of the city code sets fees for demolishing buildings: $50 for a single-car garage, $75 for a two-car garage, $50 for any other small accessory building up to 250 square feet, and 25 cents a square foot for all other buildings. A typical backyard shed falls in the $50 tier.

MassDEP must get an asbestos notification at least ten working days before any project that removes or disposes of asbestos. Its separate construction and demolition notification doesn't apply to residential buildings with fewer than 20 units. State waste bans keep wood out of landfills and keep metal, brick and concrete out of disposal, which is why shed debris goes to a C&D transfer station that sorts and recycles.

No. The City collects one bulk item, such as a dresser or table, or one appliance a week, scheduled 48 hours before trash day. Its residential service does not include construction debris or doors, and the City says to call a private hauler for construction and demolition debris. Any bulk item taller than 5 feet must be broken down and bundled. A whole shed needs a removal company, a dumpster or a trip to a transfer station.

If you’d rather haul it yourself, sort the load first: clean wood, metal, roofing, concrete and household contents often go to different places or cost different amounts. Call ahead before hiring a trailer. What can be recycled ↗
71 Forest St., Brockton, MA 02302
A licensed C&D transfer station open to the public. It takes appliances, clean-out materials, pallets, fencing, wood waste, brick, concrete, yard debris, roofing, construction debris and metal, and recycles clean wood, metals, asphalt, brick, concrete and clean gypsum. It doesn't take hazardous materials, asbestos, liquids such as paint, or kitchen trash, and its site says bulky and clean-out debris can't be accepted at this time.
Fees: C&D material is $300 a ton with a $300 one-ton minimum, plus a fuel surcharge. Tires, propane tanks, mattresses and other items cost extra. Cash and cards; no checks or American Express.
Before you go: Open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Loads are weighed in and out, and you unload yourself. It closes without notice when it reaches its daily tonnage, so call 508-588-2332 first.

Fees: Not published. Call for the current rate.

300 Oak Hill Way, Brockton, MA 02301
The City's drop-off for Brockton residents. It takes paint (April 1 to October 31), propane tanks, motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries, appliances, electronics, tires, cardboard, cans and bottles, and yard waste in paper bags. It doesn't list construction debris, so it suits a shed's contents, not its lumber.
Fees: Free for most items; a fee applies to some items, such as tires and TVs.
Before you go: Open year-round, Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring proof of residency. Questions: 508-580-7827.
Brockton DPW: 2025-2026 Recycling & Trash Guidelines (PDF) ↗
Brockton's city trash service covers household trash and one bulk item a week. For construction and demolition debris, the City tells residents to call a private hauler, and no city page or ordinance found gives one company exclusive rights to that debris. City code makes anyone hauling dirt, rubbish or waste keep the load covered while driving. The code cites the state law on garbage transport (G.L. c. 111, § 31A), and the Board of Health fee list shows an $85 offal permit, but no published Brockton rule says whether a shed-removal crew hauling lumber needs a Board of Health permit.

If you rent a roll-off for a teardown, Brockton's code requires a dumpster permit from the Board of Health first. A temporary permit for construction or demolition lasts up to 30 days and can be renewed once for 30 more. The Board of Health fee list shows $50 for a temporary dumpster permit. Placing a dumpster without one can bring a $100-a-day fine. Health Department: 508-894-1480.

Brockton has one local historic district, the South Street Historic District, around South Street near Main Street, Warren Avenue and Chestnut Street. Inside it, the City may not issue a demolition permit for a building or structure until the historical commission issues a certificate of appropriateness, non-applicability or hardship. No citywide demolition delay ordinance turned up in Brockton's Revised Ordinances.

Trojan Recycling on Forest Street in Brockton and WIN Waste Stoughton on Page Street both take construction and demolition debris and are open to the public. The City's own drop-off center on Oak Hill Way doesn't list construction debris among what it takes.

Tell us whether the shed has power. A licensed electrician should disconnect and make the circuit safe before teardown. Say which items stay, and whether the slab or footings go too.
Get a shed removal quote ↗A small empty resin shed and a large timber shed on a concrete slab are different jobs, so we don’t publish one number. The price depends on the shed’s size and material, what’s inside, what it sits on, and the route from the shed to the truck.
